Is there a non-actor variant of this trope? Like how, say, Go-Bots were poor man's Transformers?

Not as far as I know. And the scenario you listed would be Complaining About Shows You Don't Like.

I'm surprised this isn't a trope about jury rigging or replacing premium quality goods with inferior ones that fit the same bill. I.E. Using honey on cucumbers as a substitute for melons
