does this only apply to things like weapons or is Badass Grandpa a subtrope?

Badass Grandpa isn't a subtrope, because Older Is Better literally implies that older stuff is better than new. Badass granpas have probably spent a large portion of their lives being awesome, and thus aren't necessary better now that they're old.

An interesting point for this could be that Older isn't necessarily Better, but Timeless. An ancient concept or technology sticks around because all alternatives prove inferior. The main idea would be that Older gained insight on some fundamental truth about existence, and subsequent generations couldn't improve on perfection.
