The examples and the description clash here. Are the examples supposed to only be ones where the "odd name out" turns out to be the important one? Or are we just listing every "set plus odd" naming anywhere?

I agree, because I can find a very subtle example. I sometimes see Irvine Kinneas of Final Fantasy VIII as a bit of an outcast or somewhat not quite like them for some reason. Then I realized that not only the first letter in his first name is in the left half of the alphabet (A-M), it's also the only one that's a vowel.
