"Impossible! Beaten by a little girl?!"
Dracula in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, after getting defeated by Maria

  • Also in Castlevania, the quoted character, Maria Renard of Rondo of Blood is like this, fighting with doves, cats, robins, a baby dragon, and a turtle shell, but these are all quite powerful - being juvenile forms of the four legendary beasts of Chinese mythology- and have more varied use than straight Character Richter's weapons. In Castlevania Judgement, she is again the lethal joke, seemingly unable to control her weapon and having her pet owl do her final attack for her, but with a long range area of effect attack with nearly no startup and a three move combo that links back into itself with little to no lag whatsoever. A year later in universe, and she loses the joke status, but the lethal is no less applicable.
  • Tekken 2 has the boxing kangaroo character Roger, who, while obviously for laughs, is extremely hard-hitting. He has the crouch dash, an excellent throw game, good punches, and some excellent sidestepping moves.
  • Jonathan in the manga Fullmoon wo Sagashite. While it's not a game and he isn't playable, his overall nature fits this trope quite well. He's the partner of Izumi; a crudely drawn ghost with a hat usually getting slapped around for making stupid jokes and generally not seeming like a serious character ...until it is revealed that he's actually the Shinigami's superior and responsible to a few sabotage acts concerning Mitsuki prior to the revelation. Later he also pierces Mitsuki and Takuto with a lance. Not to mention the scene in which he comes out with his secret is just badass. (He grows an abundance of tentacles out of his body which trap Izumi in a spectacular way high up in the sky.)
  • P. Howard loves this trope, as most of his heroes are also comic relief characters. One of his books features a character nicknamed Chalk as a running gag. Until he reveals himself as the secret agent who helped the protagonist all this time, and was a major plot point throughout the novel.

Lethal Joke Character is "character is a joke in GAMEPLAY but can be lethal" not "comic relief lethal character".

  • Not really a "joke," per se, but the designers of EA Sports' NHL 09 included Sabrina Ladha, a Make-A-Wish kid who loved the series and passed away shortly before the game came out. She appears in the game as a free-agent goalie with near-perfect ratings and low salary demands, so players who started a franchise often didn't realize she was there until she was leading the league in all goalie stats. This led to a lot of hilarious forum posts like "Who is this 10 year old girl and why is she kicking my ass!?!?"

Can we change the picture? Joke Character already had the streetest fighter joke.

I agree- that's hardly a good enough joke for one picture, let alone two. As for a new picture...I really have no idea. Joke Character is hard enough to show in a picture. How do you get the lethality out of it, too?

I know he's a non-game example, but why isn't Genta from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger on the examples list? He's a great example of Lethal Joke Charater, he's a sixth ranger and thus very powerful, but he acts very wacky compared to the other Shinkenger, and unlike the main team, who are fulltime samurai, he's a sushi chef. But again on the lethal side, he's the only character to make an origami (The componant's of the show's mecha) and he created the first upgrade that the team uses.

Not to mention a pair of pictures, one showing him as a sushi seller and the other in battle, could be used as the page picture.

What? Sushi chef is a serious occupation. Imagine you meet a samurai and sushi chef on street, which one you will consider sane?

Seriously, non-game example should be character that represent this type of character (you known, in anime that parody RPG). Else it will be Bunny Ears Lawyer.

Actually if you looked at how Genta acts, you'd say the Samurai is more sane. Not only does Genta try to be the largest ham on screen most times, hes overly dramatic and he's given one of his origami a nickname, whereas none of the Samurai, not even Takeru whose trained for most of his life and is their lord, has given their origami nicknames.

Super Smash Brothers: -The only characters that could be considered "joke characters" are Jigglypuff (and arguably only in the first game) and pichu (in melee). None of the other characters are joke characters, so none of the other characters should be listed here.

It doesn't matter if people consider them bad, if they are not included as a joke by the developer, that just makes them poorly balanced, not a laugh. The fact that you might be good with them or that they look silly shouldn't change that they don't belong on this page. I didn't edit them out because I'm just a lowly guest, but I thought someone should take a look.

-Just got known, this is me. (mrpeach32)

Apparently, whoever did the Justified Edit of the example dealing with Liepard and Mischievous Heart is Completely Missing The Point; abusing it with Assist/Roar was one of the big discussions about the pokemon's usefulness on Smogen and other boards, and at least one person has posted up a transcrip of a Pokemon battle where they get decimated with such a combo. "Awesome But Impractical" my ass; I got rid of part of the edit, but didn't notice the one inside the example itself before the page got checked out.

Minor clean-up

Joke Character are purposefully underpowered characters;this sounds simply as Cutscene Incompetence.

  • Oh yeah, here's another one—take a Pokemon, say, Cloyster. What are your impressions? Slow, unwieldy, bad typing? Now, what if the designers gave it a move that, all in one turn, SHARPLY raised Speed, Attack, and Special Attack at the cost of a minor downturn in defenses? Ladies and gentlemen, that move is Shell Break, and it is for that reason that Cloyster is now a popular sweeper in Generation V and Crustle, Omastar, Carracosta and Gorebyss are not (or at least, should not be) taken lightly.
  • Although admittedly Cloyster gets extreme Superpower Lottery in Gen V. BIG time. It gets shell break, and his previously niche multi-hit move is buffed. With his skill link ability, all his multi-hit move will hit exactly 5 time every time. The problem is while in previous gen its power isnt that big and it has messy accuracy, in gen 5 not only it was buffed into 90 % cchace of hitting, but it also buffed the power of the move in to 25 per hit totalling into 125(even higher than Outrage !!!!). It also break focus sash AND resist beery on the first hit. AND as a bonus cloyster has 3 of them complete with different typing and can used together(if you want to) to gave great coverage.

Exists no reason to believe Cloyster is puposefully Underpowered-he sounds more as one low tier character.

  • Most NFE (not-fully evolved) pokemon received a SURPRISING buff on BW. The reason for this is an item called Evolution Stone (AKA Miracle Of Evolution), which boosts the Defense and Special Defense of a NFE by 50%. Add that to, for example, mons like Chansey or Dusclops. Bonus points if said mon can boost its own defenses. Yes, you now have created an unexpected wall that will be extremely hard to knock out.
    • What's that? You want a wall that can even resist its own weakness? Meet Piloswine, capable of learning Amnesia, Curse, and Ice Shard (STAB Ice move with Priority). Oh yeah, it can have Thick Fat as an ability. Yes, you have an Ice-type with normal effectiveness towards Fire attacks. Think about that for a second.

More of the characters listed are definitively not joke characters.

  • Marowak is in a similar position with the Thick Club. A single Thick Clubbed Swords Dance sends its attack flying into quad-digit land. And it gets better when this is coupled with a B Ped Agility/Rock Polish. And to answer how it hits 1000+ despite the 999 limit: it doubles the current stat, it ignores the whole "round down to 999" calculation. Ever wondered why it was so popular back in the early 00s? Add Ninjask, resident Fragile Speedster, who can pass its speed to Marowak, and you've got an almost unstoppable combo.

No reason to believe Marowak is one Joke Character and the post not given none.

  • This type of Lethal Joke Character gets averted in Suikoden V...but not by excluding three rune slot Game Breakers. Instead, the favored three rune slot ass-kicker is Miakis, an elite Queen's Knight who specializes in Dual Wielding and is said in-game to have been a badass since she was 5 years old.

Why mention aversions?
