But that's just it: Eddie Temple had proven that you do NOT survive being on his bad side. Out of all of this business with Jimmy, Eddie and the Serbs, XXXX only survived by continuing to be useful. He had it shoved in his face throughout the film, that those who try to take the money and run just die, one way or another. Despite the entirety of the film showing him that he is way out of his depth, he still tries to trick the worst players in the game.
That's the chance XXXX has to take, if he wants to ever get out of the game at all. He's betting that the scam would give him enough cash to go somewhere beyond Eddie's reach. Now, whether he actually wins that bet is another matter entirely.
"Did I really think Eddie was going to give me three million for those pills? Did I fuck!". Even so, I think it was really stupid of XXXX to try and take those pills back after Eddie steals them. Eddie had XXXX looking at a very long drop halfway through the film, yet he arranges an armed robbery against somebody who has been an evil bastard for much, much longer and has the resources to put anybody who crosses him through a meat-grinder.
