Dropped this bit for Tom. I don't see that a concrete point is being made about his powers and background being explicit or mysterious.

  • Tom was actually created by Tolkien before The Lord of the Rings, and was only revealed as being set there a few poems into the collection. Old man willow, his marriage to the River Daughter, etc. were all set there. Read as much or as little into that as you want.

Re-wrote to integrate the thread-mode new materal. Please read Example Indentation In Trope Lists. Placing the original here for reference.

  • The Doctor himself qualifies, although not so much as he once did, as 40 years of television have shed quite a bit of light on his origins. However, a suggested series centered around a younger Doctor (whose concept eventually became The Sarah Jane Adventures) was vetoed for the exact same reasons as Johnny The Homicidal Maniac above.
    • Even though "He's probably a Time Lord" isn't a sign of Inexplicably Awesome in the Whoniverse for obvious reasons, being a Time Lord doesn't explain a lot about the Doctor. Case in point, even other Time Lords think he's weird.
      • The so-called "Cartmel Masterplan" was a story outline created precisely to restore the mysteriousness of the Doctor after said decades of slowly revealing backstory (involving the revelation that most of what we know about the Doctor is a lie, a gradually growing tendency for the Doctor to use Chessmaster-like plans and hints of a connection with one of the founders of Time Lord society) that sadly never came to fruition.
