This trope needs to be renamed to I Am Very English, as British obviously includes Welsh, Scottish and (northern) Irish. One of the latter persons speaking with the indicated RP accent would fall under one of the different tropes, involving faking an English accent or some such. Calling it 'I Am Very British' would be like saying 'I Am Very American' and including Brazil, Chile, etc.

Gah, I just fell into this myself. I have a classmate who speaks more-or-less Estuary, and I said "You're Australian, right?" It's not just TV and movies, it's also the BBC. At least she didn't seem too offended.

I'm guessing Mayfair was chosen as the high-end part of London due to Monopoly, where it is the most expensive property. Way to research the true 'poshness' of parts of London...
