Should we have a separate trope for stuff that gets hyped to much before its release, I've noticed a lot of use of this happens to stuff, usually video games like Killzone and Fable, that suffer from getting too much hype while they're still in production. That doesn't sound like the same as people praising something to the point where it can become a Broken Pedestal.

Take it to Image Pickin', with a concrete suggestion.

Why is it that It's Popular, Now It Sucks! still has examples, even though this doesn't? The former is arguably more flamebait-y.

It still seems to me that people are mixing up Critical Backlash and Hype Backlash.

I don't think the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy deserves mention on this page. According to the trope's "Laconic" page, Hype Backlash says "the work's not nearly as good as every says it is...". It seems like everyone goes to great lengths to tear the prequels to pieces, bashing every little thing, when in fact, the prequels are not as bad as they make them out to be.

The trouble is, particularly with SW's more rabid fans, that everyone seems to overemphasize the problems of the prequel trilogy while downplaying, or even ignoring, similar or the same problems in SW's original trilogy. It's simply irritating.

Then move it to Critical Backlash and rewrite it explaning why it isn't as bad as fans said.

I've just gone to the page, and it looks like someone already has done that.

In response to Lionheart0's archived post:

That image of James Cameron is Just a Face and a Caption, so it's a bad image.

Took the liberty of removing this (original dot-point kept on page but provided here for clarity):

  • Don't forget annoying Troper Tales where tropers take tropes that work perfectly well in media and try to apply them to real life with mixed results.
    • And the It Just Bugs Me! section, where Tropers bitch about how much they hate things about TV shows (half of these rants are about how characters that aren't real do things they don't like).
      • Which is completely misinterpreting the point of It Just Bugs Me!, which is supposed to be a place where Tropers rant about the Fridge Logic/Plot Holes in TV Shows.
      • And the Wild Mass Guessing section, where Tropers voice their insane theories best left in their minds or a fanfic.
      • And the Nightmare Fuel section, which in some peoples opinion, is a bunch a bed-wetters who take the scary out of anything by overreacting to it. Plus it's become a subject of ridicule for the repeated mention of any animated character ever having "dead eyes".
      • And the way they constantly KEEP REFERRING TO THEMSELVES IN ANY CONTEXT. It's like every second page ends with some lame "meta" reference to what you're actually doing right now. That just fucking sucks!

Because validity of the observations or not, it was just beginning to sound like a whole lot of whining about tropes these particular people happen not to like.

Any chance, any chance at all, this is a Subjective Trope?

It is.

This whole trope page just seemed like a sounding board ( la IMDb message boards) for individuals who didn't like a particular movie that got a certain amount of Hype. More subjective than what I normally expect from TV Tropes.

Question: What's the criteria here to determine what belongs on the main page and what should be relegated to Troper Tales? Because I'm really not seeing a lot of difference between the two pages except for the writing style of most of the examples.

Troper tales are for personal experiences of feeling Hype Backlash against a work (e.g; "I expected a lot from The Shawshank Redemption because of all the hype, but - " and so on and so forth.) The main page is for examples that have actually gained a general reputation for getting Hype Backlash - like The Dark Knight or Avatar.
