An Evil Knockoff is based in the hero in-universe. Shadow The Hedgehog is not an Evil Knockoff to Sonic The Hedgehog, but Metal Sonic is.

There are at least 2 Wrestling Examples. The fake Undertaker from 1994 and the NWO Sting of Fall Brawl 96 who also pops up latter.
