What if the one dying was a Dogged Nice Guy whom the object of his affections couldn't stand. She makes a Dying Declaration of Love to him, stating that she only rejected him because she was afraid. Now, bear in mind that she's only lying so she can let him die happy. Inversion? Subversion? Or just plain flexible?

EDIT: I changed the places of the characters so that the one dying is her, not him. And she really is sincere about loving him (in the general sense of the word), and given that she'd been brutally friendzoning him since they became Fire-Forged Friends up till that point, it was a huge Throw the Dog a Bone on her part.
