Per TRS, this is being redefined to refer to affectionate grandparents, and the original definition of friendships between grandparents and grandchildren is being merged with Intergenerational Friendship:

Despite that being what "doting" means, and what Doting Parent refers to? That's... confusing.

When I think of a "doting grandparent", a little old lady knitting jumpers and baking cakes is exactly what springs to mind.
