Is the film "Priest" actually an example of this trope?
The essence of the trope is "the denomination isn't mentioned, when it should be relevent".
In Priest, there is a single Church that rules society. Any dissent is considered heresy. In such a society, there wouldnt be any denominations, so there would be no reason to give it a more specific name.
On top of that, the Church has a lot of trappings of Catholicism (rosaries, confession, monk-like robes, use of the honorific "monsignior", etc). And the Cstholic Church was historically often refered to as simply "The Church", because in their eyes, they were the only one.
So i would guess that "The Church" in Priest is supppsed to be either the Catholic Church, or something that has evolved from/subsumed it, and replaced all other religions and denominations.
