Funstuffof Doom: Are they really Baitand Switch Lesbians? In the subs I watched, while the admittedly never said the words 'I love you', they clearly expressed similar sentiments to each other. Also, at the end, they both decided not to pursue a relationship because they were too different, not because they were the same gender. So, their relationship wouldn't have happened if one of them had been a guy. Basically, what I'm asking is this: Is this actually a case of writers implying a relationship and then copping out, or simply a relationship that didn't happen? 'Cause, from my view, it's the latter all the way. Yuri Fanboy, though, so I may be biased...

I also feel that it's a relationship that didn't happen but it's a moot point, since there's one lesbian relationship less in the animeverse, q.e.d.

Well, yeah, but the trope's about setting up implications of a relationship, and then not following through. Malicious and intentional lesyay, you might call it. In Canaan, they're both lesbians (or bisexual) and they do indeed start a relationship; they simply break it off quickly because they decide they're incompatible.

So, my question on the definition of the trope: Are Baitand Switch Lesbians present any time two people, regardless of orientation, are built up to have a relationship and then do not, or is it more specifically when two people are presented or implied to be lesbians, but aren't?

Bait And Switch Lesbians is a ploy often used by producers of manga and anime. A lot of people like it when two pretty women act cute toward each other (mostly men, but not exclusively, mind you), so having two potentially lesbian characters will likely garner a lot of attention. But, lo and behold, these two women won't wind up with each other after all, since that would likely endanger the placing in a favorable TV time slot aimed at a younger audience. So, lesbians are being used to lure viewers in (the bait) and excuses are sought not to let them have each other after all (the switch). One or both can be coupled with a male character, be killed off or they simply decide not to be with each other, even though it makes little sense considering their feelings—like in this case. So, yes, the trope is valid.

A question about Liang-Qi. Does the game that inspired this series ever go into more detail about her backstory? Because I have a WMG about it that I'd like to post ...

Given the trope description for Expy, which says the similarity has to be really obvious and the expy has to be clearly inspired by the earlier character, I really doubt that all of these should be listed. I can't say for sure in every case, though, as I haven't watched all of these anime. I did finish Code Geass right before I started watching Canaan, though, and I never saw any similarities between characters in those series. They don't even look remotely the same.

Anyway, putting the whole thread here until we can figure out which examples are, in fact, examples, and which ones should be cut entirely.

  • Expy: Canaan is one of Saber, another cool and adorably-small blonde cutie from Fate Stay Night. Her eyes though, are more like Ryougi Shiki, of Kara No Kyoukai.
    • Similarly, Maria's appearance and personality matches that of Arcueid Brunestud of Shingetsutan Tsukihime, a blonde vampire with a bright, sweet and sunny disposition.
      • Her sparse, depressing living quarters bring to mind Shiki's as well.
      • Canaan's profile against the red moon in episode six. Who's Arcueid's expy now?
    • You can't look at Liang Qi and not notice how much she's like Olba Frost.
      • Or how much she's like Rolo or Lady Une adding to this is how similar Alphard is to Lelouche and Treize, especially when it comes to strategy and planning.
      • To be honest, she and Lio Shirazumi have A LOT in common. And share alot of tropes.
    • Mino has also been likened to being the descendant of The Immortal Colasour, his voice and his ability to survive almost any dangerous situation adds credence to that, approaching a gun wielding Hakko and only being grazed once by a bullet just seals the deal.
    • Is it just me, or does Minoru look like Kiritsugu or Daisuke?
