Hold It! How is Northern Ireland part of "The British Islands" when it does not constitute the whole of its island?

Then again, how aren't the "Crown Dependencies" part of the United Kingdom?

Actually, since the Commander-in-Chief of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the Prime Minister, why are those nations considered the United Kingdom as opposed to the Dependencies? Those areas should be called The British (or British-Irish) Republic (Formally "The Republic of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.")
