I insisted that we need either a link to the Wikipedia article, or we go into greater detail, because the situation was sufficiently unlike the Stock Shout-Out to need further explanation. (For one, most examples of this leave out the major supporting role the Klu Klux Klan had in the actual events, for fairly obvious reasons.)

I do not think that the current description needs more detail. An outbound link to an even more detailed description isn't bad, though.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
An editor insisted that the current description needs to explain the relevant trope in greater detail, but without actually pointing out what is needed or adding anything to the page that provides additional explanation, I'm not entirely sure I'm convinced about this.
At the very least, I concur with a previous editor who said that any additional explanation that is required needs to be layed out to readers on the page itself. Just leaving url links serves no real purpose; there's a reason we believe Weblinks Are Not Examples, after all.
