I feel this trope is in need of clean up.
The FFXIII example is excellent, because it clearly identifies why and how the starkness of the final room is unsettling.
Many examples, however, are just "this is a stark environment" without indication that it is meant to be unsettling. Cloud City, for example, is meant to be inviting until the trap is revealed.
