Light Novel Haruhi Suzumiya Discussion

Concerning the light novels themselves, if an example of a trope is found in one of the books rather than the animation, shouldn't it be put in the "literature" section, rather than the "anime & manga"? I've seen both, so I'm not sure...
01:47:39 AM May 16th 2015
If there is a separate section, yes.

One of the worst anime ever with one of the worst characters ever

I apologize if this is the wrong place to put this, but I checked the shout out page, and this isn't mentioned. During the festival of the Endless Eight recursions, Yuki buys herself a mask. It seemed to be the same one each time, and seemed vaguely familiar, like the likeness of an anime or possibly live-action television character. Does anyone know what I am talking about, and possibly the name of the show, or am I just crazy?
01:24:11 PM Feb 3rd 2013
Never mind, I found it. The character mask belongs to Ultraman.

Nothing to do with the plot itself, but part of the charm of Kyon's narration is when characters randomly respond to his inner monologues and mental responses, right? I've noticed recently that the English translations of the novels always have a "I said," or "I told him/her" tacked onto the end of every thought without quotations that other characters respond to. The original text doesn't do that, does it? Are the translators afraid that Kyon's style will confuse readers? It's starting to bug me every time I see those words jump out at me because it automatically means that another character will say something about his thoughts.
11:01:49 PM Jun 26th 2012
Where do the Alternate Translation Titles of the Light Novels come from? I mean, the Disappearance one might be relevant Trivia (Which is why it should be moved to the Trivia page) but since we have official english translations up to Disassociation provided why do we still have those aside from people not wanting to let go of Fan Translations?

If there's no answer in a couple of days I'm going to delete most of them and move the Disappearance one to the Trivia tab.

What if Haruhi had already known about her powers but decided to go along with things?

So as someone who has seen the two seasons of the anime and watched the disappearance, who enjoy it all very much. Should I start on the english books from the start? Or should I just continue to the book that takes place after the movie?

Night of the living Haruhi.

Batallion was in the Japanese title for The Return of the Living Dead.,+The+(1985);tt=on

Did they use the same kanji as SOS-dan uses?
10:28:44 AM Jul 4th 2011
"I'm the brigade chief and director and ... Anyway, I won't allow you to go against me!"

What's the name of the trope for when an author is lampshading a mental block like this? Haruhi is certain that she has one fact that she can present to instantly win this argument, and yet when she reaches, it just slips away.

Considering the change on the parts of Astonishment from Part One/Part Two to First Part/Final Part and back is pretty much an edit war by this point, I think it needs to be discussed. What are the parts officially called? While I agree that First Part/Final Part is incredibly awkward, if that's how they're officially titled. However, since the person who keeps changing it to First Part/Final Part isn't leaving edit reasons, it's hard to say. Can we get some input?
07:17:53 PM Jun 17th 2011
The characters used for the titles, 前 and 後, can be translated to "front" and "rear", but while the former can mean "first", the latter doesn't mean "second", it would mean "last". However, unlike the titles of the anime episodes of Remote Island Syndrome, they are not accompanied of a character that means "part", so, if you want to get technical, the most accurate translation wouldn't be Part One/Part Two or First Part/Final Part; it would be more like simply First/Last.
08:11:57 PM Jun 17th 2011
All right. Personally, I don't really care what's used, I was just sick of the edit war going on. If that's the correct translation, use it, and we'll switch to the official English translation whenever it's released.
08:45:33 PM Jun 17th 2011
Thanks, and I agree. I didn't mean for an edit war to start, I'm still getting used to how TV Tropes works. So sorry about that. ^^;

Is Haruhi The Messiah of a different sort? Kyon's belief in her inner good nature is a clue here. Hopefully she'll never touch Princess Emeraude as they are exactly anti-character opposites of each other and so would vanish in a massive flash of gamma rays.
03:39:14 PM Apr 11th 2011
I realize this is blasphemy of the highest order, but could we please make this sound a little less like it was written by Kyoto Animation? All the gushing is beginning to get in the way of the actual article.
03:55:01 PM Feb 26th 2011
The images keep randomly not loading for no reason.
11:42:43 PM Jan 29th 2011
The page is freakishly huge at this point. Should we do what other pages are doing and clear out all the character tropes by moving them to the character sheet?

I'd like to restore the "endless recursion" gag we had on the Memetic Mutation bullet. It's funny, and it isn't long enough as to be disruptive to the article, imho. Any objections?

The gag was this, by the way:

___ (I just copypasted it from the history page, I hope it doesn't look weird on this page).  *

Can we not have the zombie part. ಠ_ಠ
09:04:28 PM Jan 20th 2011
I'd like it if it only goes eight times. I mean it's Endless Eight.
07:24:03 AM Jan 23rd 2011
I made it so that it goes for only eight times + the zombie part :D I have the feeling that the zombie part gives some kind of closure to the gag and so stops people from adding more entries. It could just be me, though.

Here's the fixed(?) gag:

So when are we going to add a WMG page about people from other media who are Haruhi. I mean, we already have one for Time Lords (see here).
09:05:11 PM Dec 3rd 2010
So can we agree on whether this anime's All You Need To Know About The Crying Game (Haruhi as God) is a spoiler or not? The page is incredibly inconsistent — I'd say that it's about two-to-one unspoiled.
08:53:26 AM Jun 25th 2011
That's not 100% agreed to in the series. What is agreed is that she is a Reality Warper with a very sweaty grasp on reality. Thank Goddess the enemy faction doesn't kidnap her and make her watch Stephen Cobert.

Does anybody else think it'd be a good idea to make pages for the individual novels, as is done with the Harry Potter books? I'd be glad to help with the first three.
01:11:57 AM Nov 28th 2010
Nah, it would just be better with a folder organizing of tropes.

Like Mahou Sensei Negima!
07:20:59 PM Dec 7th 2010
I'd like to try to do this as well with separation which is always better than the Mahou Sensei Negima! model, which lacks rhyme or reason. Although I'm afraid I only have experience with the anime. (It might be fun to have an entire page for Endless Eight; so much referencing it...)
08:36:48 PM Sep 9th 2010
Deleted the two lines below, since they use this troper:

  • Considering Haruhi's status in the anime, this troper wouldn't have been surprised if the movie had indeed won an Oscar.
  • Although this troper recommends actually skipping episodes 4-7, or 4-6, because of the gratuitous (and rather nice) fan service in episode 3. As already mentioned, there's a bit in that episode for everyone.

How come this page is named last name first, but the Japanese character names of all the other pages on this wiki are first name first?

Removed the Character Alignment entry since this isn't a tabletop game and there's no reason to force D&D character alignment on it. I'll post it here in case consensus goes against me:

    Removed Character Alignment entry

  • Character Alignment
    • Haruhi: Chaotic Neutral. She's willing to do anything so long as she thinks it will have an interesting result. Those who see her as a Jerkass Sue are more likely to think she's Chaotic Evil. However, of late she has begun to slowly turn down the path of Chaotic Good as she begins to actually care for the feelings of those around her.
    • Kyon: Neutral Good. As much as he may try to keep to himself and obey society's expectations, he'll subvert the hell out of the rules if he has to for the greater good.
    • Yuki: Lawful Neutral. Her raison d'etre is to obey orders without regard to the consequences (viz. Endless Eight). As she develops more of a personality later, she leans toward Neutral Good.
    • Mikuru: Lawful Good. The only thing her dislike of trouble and her obedience to her superiors ever conflicts with is the possibility of someone she cares about being hurt. She frequently places herself in the role of a sacrifice for the good of others.
    • Itsuki: About as close to True Neutral as you can get; his actions depend vastly on the situation.
      • The Snow Mountain Syndrome chapter however reveals he may be leaning towards Neutral Good.
12:03:22 AM Aug 8th 2010
Character Alignment is generally agreed to apply to works well outside of tabletop games, as it's a handy system for breaking down a character's morality at a glance. Especially since a few of the characters are a bit complicated morally, the trope is up for a reason.
01:09:02 AM Aug 8th 2010
Wouldn't this be better off over in the character page then?
11:27:36 AM Aug 8th 2010
Potentially; if someone wants to move it there, that'd be solid, but it shouldn't be deleted flat-out because because Haruhi "isn't a tabletop game". The trope is meant to extend well beyond that.

The link to the novel previews has what seems to be a major spoiler; it might be a good idea to preface the link with a warning.
09:07:46 PM May 9th 2010
Alright, so I know my expansion of the Starfish Aliens entry is a little... epic... in scope, but I thought I managed (or at least tried) to hit a lot of relevant points and related tropes. At the very least the bit about the Data Overmind and the Canopy Domain seeing us as Starfish should remain, I think, since it's a bit of a plot point especially with Suo (who, if the book 10 preview is any indication, seems kind of autistic due to sensory weirdness overload as it's made clear she's struggling to comprehend anything about her human-built surroundings and concepts). The stuff about Asakura I just found interesting and relevant, especially since it looks like she'll play a larger role in book 10 and possibly onward.
10:37:27 AM May 11th 2010
We have an Analysis namespace, write your analysis there.

The How to Write an Example page specifically discourages writing long walls of text with spoilers, and too much plot details, if the basic message could be said without these.

It is especially harmful here on the Haruhi page, that is
  • Already too huge even without it. We have namespaces to avoid this.
  • the 10th novel you are spoilering about isn't even released, so your analysis will be only read by a very small number of those who read the preview (plus a few who didn't even realize that it exists, and will accidentally spoiler themselves)
12:35:43 PM May 11th 2010
Fair enough points. I've gone ahead and trimmed the Asakura stuff from the entry, although I left in the "No Kyon, You Are The Starfishes" part because it is still a relevant plot-related entry and can help people understand a few of the characters.

As far as the spoilers, I can understand what you're saying, but this entire page must drive you mad then, not just the stuff I wrote. It seems to be open season for spoilers on anything prior to at least book 9; the book 10 preview spoilers are everywhere due to the translation being widely available on certain parts of the Internet. I really just went with what the rest of the page is doing.

So I plead "mob mentality" on that, although it may be time to have a discussion about spoilers in general.
12:46:43 PM May 2nd 2010
Should we add the new spoiler to the CMOA page? Because, I think, it sounds VERY awesome.

I just realized that the producers might have snuck in a stealth crowning moment of heartwarming.

In the second season, towards the end of Sigh; Kyon woke up to find the editing magically done because Haruhi believed in him.
  • That was in the book, too, so it'd be the author's doing.
02:52:35 PM Apr 22nd 2010
Er, reply, Saiya Jedi, don't edit.

Anyway, I suppose so, but take it with a grain of salt. There's also Kyons musings that Yuki probably did it.
10:08:28 PM May 7th 2010
Yes, there is no answer given as to how it happened. Presumably the time travelers could have done it as well—they have a lot of time do pull off something like that. Anybody's guess is as good as any.

Animation Bump. Does anyone other than me think the "Live Alive" episode, with the music festival, could be considered as having an animation bump?
05:46:26 PM Jul 11th 2011
It's either that or Conspicuous CGI.
08:03:48 AM Apr 16th 2010
Regarding the Manic Pixie Dream Girl example, while Haruhi might not qualify as a deconstruction, she certainly doesn't play the trope straight. To quote the main article, the MPDG is "inexplicably obsessed with our stuffed-shirt hero, on whom she will focus her kuh-razy antics until he learns to live and love," causing him to "open your heart to the great, wondrous adventure of life." This has not happened. Kyon is still Kyon,; if anything, it's Haruhi who has mellowed out under Kyon's influences.
03:39:24 PM Apr 17th 2010
Kyon does admit he likes the craziness Haruhi brings during Disappearance though.
