Removed this for the meantime:

  • The 2008 Alone In The Dark game. Would you believe it's worse than the Uwe Boll movie? It is. I'm talking Nineties-level voice acting, storytelling where nobody tells you what to do EVER, random and unworkable camera changes (I mean come on, first person to bird's eye view, to over the shoulder and back to first person in less than 20 seconds?), a mind-numbingly complex item and inventory system, and combat controls are so awkward you end up skipping (that's right, the game lets you skip through to the end!) past every battle, kind of defeating the purpose of having any form of progression. And don't get me started on the subtle complexities of hotwiring a car all while demonic zombies are breaking in to kill you. Good luck even getting into the right seat, and you need the aim of a professional sniper to actually do it and not turn the radio on instead. They where also nice enough to include a CD of the game's lackluster sound track. Thank you so much. You'll find yourself screaming "WHY DID I PAY $50.00 FOR THIS SHIT?!?!?" Then you'll realise that it sounds better than the voice acting and scream louder, then you'll realise it still sounds better, and get caught in a permanent loop until your throat bleeds. It's that bad.

This edit war has been going on for quite a while. In all seriousness, can we reach some sort of agreement over what to do with this entry already?

I went on Metacritics and it has an overral rating of 58%, bad, but not horrible per say. Normally, I wouldn't remove something on (biased) press rating alone but it has been contested before. There are ton of worse rated games, atleast.

Rotton Tomatoes list it as fifteen in the worst movies of the 00's, ahead of stinkers like Daddy Day Camp, Christmas With the Kranks, Rollerball and Pluto Nash.

http://au.rottentomatoes.com/guides/worst_of_the_worst/9/

It far and away beats the second worst video game movie House of the Dead (42) and Bloodrayne (48), also by Boll. Given he's made sequals to two of them, not to mention that he has stated that he makes bad game films on purpose to piss off fans, I say it stays.

Should there be an additional stipulation for an entry that there has to be consensus between critics and gamers alike that the entry is horrible? I followed the two stipulations of a game being more than just offensive and having reputable sources declaring it horrible with some entries I made (such as Hatred and the Virtual Boy), but they were still removed because even though their critical reception was poor, they were still said to be popular among some gamers or have cult followings.

Removed because this game's main pages says that fans are split on it, while its YMMV page as tropes like Love It or Hate It and Needs More Love. I can't speak for the latter (not having played it myself), but you can't have the former without people who love it.

Of course they will be split on it because at the moment there are very few good JRPG options for us. NISA keeps peddling this kind of drivel which has only made other publishers less willing to export their stuff over here but since there is at least people willing to throw money to save off the drought, they are being brought over due to lack of supply from other companies.

Fighter Within for Xbox One, anyone? Terrible AI, Waggle galore, repetitive gameplay, piss-poor menu design, and weak graphics for the eighth generation are few of the many flaws of the game. Moreover, it has a Metacritic score of 24, a user score of 3.5, and Angry Joe named it the second worst game of 2013. Here are a few reviews to consider.

For your consideration, there's a 2013 cricket video game called Ashes Cricket 2013. It's been thrashed for having poor graphics, dumb AI, broken batting mechanics, repetitive (and ear-bleedingly bad) commentary and numerous bugs. The PC game got an avalanche of terrible Steam reviews and a Metacritic user score of 1.0 (no critic reviews, though IGN tore this game a new one here). It was later supposed to be ported to 7th gen consoles as well as Wii U, but they got cancelled after the overwhelmingly negative reviews for the PC version. Reception from cricket fans and gamers alike was so bad, 505 pulled the game from Steam and released an apology for the press. Here's another gameplay video to show the game's incompetence.

Judging from the gameplay video, it seems that they had to issue refunds to everybody as well. This game seems to be a definite candidate when pairing that with cancelling the ports.

Well, I decided to give Xover a look over and from what I found, the game has over 1,000,000 downloads in its native country and a soundtrack of the game released: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fblog.livedoor.jp%2Frockmanunity%2Farchives%2F7178742.html&act=url

Taking this into account, it would have to be a huge failure in Japan to be So Bad, It's Horrible. And it doesn't seem to be so I'm afraid to say it doesn't belong.

  • Rockman Xover was released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mega Man. When the first preview for the game came out, Mega Man fans were enraged, and no wonder: the game is plagued with a nonsensical plot (Dr. Wily and Sigma have teamed up thanks to a Time Crash [which is Out of Character for both villians] and captured all the Mega Men, so Dr. Light and Dr. Cossack produce OVER-1 to stop them [which screws up the continuity]) boring gameplay (it's an on rails shooter, and Mega Man can only jump and shoot), horrible graphics (it's literally the same background and the same two enemies until the boss), shoddy animation (OVER-1's running animation "doesn't even go past 7 frames and looks choppy"), laziness on Capcom's part (they reused most of the graphics from their "port" of Mega Man X to iOS), and blatant lies (apart from the story, the other Mega Men barely appear, and the games are kept as far apart from each other as possible [with the consequence that OVER-1 is the only indication that there IS a crossover happening]). Notably, the normally Broken Base rejoiced when this game wasn't localized in the United States and Europe.

  • Mystery Quest for the NES (known as Hao's Mysterious Journey in Japan). The graphics are ugly, the music is terrible, and some of the ways to lose health (or "vitality" in this game) make no sense: aside from getting hit by enemies, you can also lose vitality by standing on parts of the ground that have skulls drawn on them or by standing in a shallow puddle of water. When your vitality gets too low, you hear a very annoying 'low health' alarm that sounds like a broken doorbell. Also, "HAO CAN NOT SWIM."

This seems to be more of a mediocre game (for its time) than a bad one. This reviewer (who has by now reviewed all Famicom and NES games released up to the middle of 1989) declares it "certainly an improvement over the awful platforming games being released by Bandai, Toei, and Takara at this time."

Just so I can be sure, would Gettysburg: Armored Warfare be fit for this page, or would it be better on the Obvious Beta page? On one hand, it's gotten plenty of scathing reviews, but on the other hand, the main problems with it are primarily focussed on the bugs and glitches (None of which have been fixed as far as I've heard), which is why I'm torn as to whether or not it should be here. Suggestion for a SBIH candidate: Time and Eternity, an RPG published by Nippon Ichi Software (huh?!) and developed by Image Epoch (with animation by Satelight).

Gaming Trend muses: "While this game isn’t broken like a Superman 64 or a Daikatana, it is on their rare level of absolute worthlessness as a gaming experience."

RPGamer describes it as "...a game that makes you wish you could turn back the hands of time so that it never existed in the first place."

Even SiliconEra, a site that deals heavily with the Japanese gaming scene, advises "...run, don’t walk, away from Time and Eternity."

It's a shame. This sounded like such a cool idea, but actually watching a few videos on NIS' Twitch.tv channel (especially the horrid battle animation) turned me off instantly.

EDIT 7/16/2013: Okay, maybe not. There are a few slightly more favorable reviews coming in since the game came out, but it still sounds like a majority thinks the game is bad.

Rescinding my nomination for now.

So... are we allowed to put game-related events here? Because even as a diehard Xbox fanboy, the reveal of the Xbox One (personally I call it the Xbone) is just miserable. We'll wait until the actual console comes out before judging that, but the reveal... I haven't seen a single person who honestly thought even half of the stuff there was a good idea. Not much game footage, if it was even there at all, announcing mandatory installs and Kinect, denying always-online but saying it would be cool if publishers did it, and... having to PAY A FEE for pre-owned games? No wait, it's not even pre-owned. It's if it's re-used at all. You can't even loan it to a friend or play it on a different profile on your console without paying up. I mean... for god's sake.

EDIT: Ok, seems I was wrong about something. You don't have to pay a fee. You have to pay THE ENTIRE PRICE OF THE GAME AGAIN. Wow.

Basically, Gearbox showed us a fraudulent demo, showing great graphics and gameplay that weren't in the actual game. Instead, we got a hideous game with boring guns, crap enemy AI, a story that reads like it was written by eight-year-olds and bland gameplay.

Having misleading marketing doesn't make it a horrible game, and thus is irrelevant.

Now, try elaborating without the hyperbole like "written by eight-year-olds." Tell us how the game is "hideous," not just that the game is "hideous."

SomeNewGuy Since: Jun, 2009

Basically, Gearbox outsourced the game's final phase of development to a third party (after the demo's release), and the third party company immediatly threw everything Gearbox did out and turned the game into an ugly, barebones shooter that just happened to have Xenomorphs in it. When they gave the now-half baked product back to Gearbox, they immediately realized that they got screwed over and tried to recreate the game, but pressure from Sega forced them to cobble something together and release it.

The worst part? Based some sources, the version of the game the third party made was even worse then the last minute build Gearbox ultimately created.

I have a suggestion for a horrible web game, it's called Loneliness. It tries to be art, but it fails miserably. The gameplay only consists of walking to the right, the graphical style feels like it's only used to hide the game maker's poor art skills, and the game's message is: If a loved one dies, you should kill yourself. This game isn't just bad, it's fucking offensive. Also, you should see this Retsufrash on the game.

Not really. The overall reception doesn't exactly scream "horrible" from my humble observation (Neptunia 1: 50% GameRankings/45 Metacritic; Neptunia 2: 60/55; Mugen Souls: 55/55) even though some of the reviewers might, so there must be about a small handful of reviewers who don't think they're that bad. "Mediocre", much like most of Idea Factory/Compile Heart's output, would be a more accurate descriptor.

This happened again with both AMY and Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor.

The above suggestion is an easier format for modern consoles, but that's tricky for 80's-early 90's consoles, PC titles and some more contemporary, obscure handhelds, all of which often have some pretty heinous examples. I'd say the best course of action is to put a notice in the description that says that the years are for consoles released during that time and PC games.

I think it should definitely stay on this page, because as the person who last reposted it said in his edit reason, you can find defenders of anything, no matter how bad. It's also worth mentioning that there have been some pretty strong rumours going around that certain people defending the game or silencing negative feedback on the Steam forums are employed by Hammerpoint Interactive. I'm not going to say that they're certain, but I seriously don't think that "some people are defending it" is really enough of a reason to remove a game from the list, because many of the flaws The War Z became infamous for are very much legitimate, particularly with regards to its launch, business practices, advertising and developer PR.

Besides, I saw examples on the now-deleted Web Original page for So Bad It's Horrible that had their defenders - that didn't stop most of them from staying up.

Seventh gen, since it's still technically an Xbox 360 game. Eighth generation for the moment only consists of the Nintendo 3 DS and Play Station Vita.

Graphics that would have been out of date two generations ago, boring, bland third-person shooting, crap controls, quotes from the show without context and rampant homophobia all combine to make one horrid game.

Does M&Ms Kart Racing really belong here? The gameplay is awful due to the terrible controls and camera, but the game does have a fanbase, mostly due to the Narmy voices (APPROACHING SOUND BARRIER!). The requirement for SBIH is that there is a niche for everything, and a game must fail to appeal to any niche to qualify. Since M&Ms Kart Racing actually has a fanbase, I think it should be on So Bad, It's Good instead.

No. That's really something that ought to go under Executive Meddling, or some Useful Notes page dedicated to trademark/copyright abuse.

Removing and posting the original text for posterity:

  • Langdell, Tim. The be-all, end-all of sleazy game company tactics. He started by running Softek, which hired dev teams on a contract: stating they'd get pay if the game was complete before deadline—then ask for more and more changes, stalling the devs until the deadline had passed. As if it wasn't bad enough, he would later form Edge Games (of which he is the only member confirmed to exist) selling only unauthorized distributions of games made and published by companies outside the US that never got an official US release. They would list projects as "pending" and never go through with them, sometimes using cover art stolen from deviantART. One was a sequel to a game called Bobby Bearing, to which Langdell didn't own a copyright.note  The company was pretty much an excuse for Langdell to make sure nobody else got to use the word "Edge" — the most notable instance being Namco's Soul Edge (it's the main reason the original game was released as Soul Blade on the Play Station and the other games in the series are titled Soul Calibur) and Mobigame's EDGE, which was pulled outright despite offers to rename it EDGY. This backfired on him when he tried to mess with Electronic Arts, ordering the iPhone version of Mirror's Edge pulled on the grounds that it risked confusion with his "upcoming" title Mirrors (fun fact: its logo ripped off Mirror's Edge's to intentionally cause confusion). EA, encouraged by the exposure of all his perfidy by the indie game community, attacked him, wielding proof that Langdell had no actual case and was doctoring his evidence. He wound up forced to settle out of court and give up nearly all his trademarks.

"I love the Power Glove. It's so bad." It fits. Lucas' use of the Power Glove in The Wizard is the most prominent instance of that product in Western popular culture. The "It's so bad" becomes unintentially hilarious when you realize that the Power Glove actually kinda sucked, which is why it's on this page. The quote fits there. It's perfect. But whatever. Cut this and put it here for now. The entry on the page for this game suggests there are Japanese people who truly consider this So Bad, It's Good. The kicker for me was that someone patched the original game!

  • One of the worst video game RPGs made, according to Japanese fans, is Hoshi Wo Miru Hito. The background graphics make no attempt to blend the tiles and when combined with the dark, dull palette choice ends up looking abysmal. The battle system is clunky, slow, and unforgiving. Select the wrong battle option? Too bad, there's no button to back up. In addition, a lot of the locations and items on the map are invisible. You can't even see the first village you're supposed to go to, and you have no introduction or instruction on what to do first. It's so bad, Japanese fans have given it the title of "Densetsu no Kusoge"...or "Legendary Shit Game".

I never played it myself (though I played the Virtual Console version ported from the Sega Genesis version), but I must ask: Would the Game Boy Advance version of Earthworm Jim 2 qualify here? It is seen as a Porting Disaster, due to complaints of such, and opinions on the orginal game's Game Boy Advance port are all over the place, but I'm not sure if it's bad on its own merits. The opinions of the port's badness seem more universally accepted on Earthworm Jim 2's GBA port than it does on the original's.

Game Rankings aggregate: 30% based on 10 reviews, with the highest score being a 4 out of 10.

Metacritic's 24 includes a 5.5 from IGN, and it's the only not-extremely negative review out of the 20 used by Metacritic's aggregation scheme. In all (un)fairness, the user score on Metacritic is at about a 3.0, which implies that the people actually meant to play the game don't like it either (of course, user reviews are easy to abuse)...

Ten years is a long time for a game to be in development. Most games are made in at least one or two years, and a lot of them turned out better. Silver Surfer has a big case of It's Hard, So It Sucks!, but it's a good example for the page due to it being largely Fake Difficulty. I'll give it a bit of a rewrite:

Yeah, I think that's actually appropriate. I admit I only put in Silver Surfer because of the AVGN's review, and I have to acknowledge that some people might potentially say it's not all that bad. In exchange, I added a title I thought would be more appropriate, Club Drive for the Atari Jaguar. Here's what I wrote:

  • Club Drive for the Atari Jaguar. For most of your missions in this game, you have to go in an RC car and pick up glowing balls of string, which is something that is truly spectacular. The graphics are shoddy and the physics are so eccentric to the point where it borders on Artificial Stupidity. In some instances, your car can levitate into the air and fly briefly. There's even an instance of Fake Difficulty to be found. In his review, where he names it the second worst game of all time (behind only the E.T. game), Seanbaby speculates that the programmers of Club Drive "might have stole their programming code from Dolphin Adventures in Tuna Nets".

I readded the Flat Out 3 entry. It was removed because of the 5/10 by Gamespot (which is the highest rating the game got), but deal is, I'd say there's a difference between "There are people that think the game is good and defend it" and "One outlet think it's mediocre/average rather than The Worse Thing Since Cancer". Even avoiding the Four-Point Scale issue, 5/10 isn't exactly a sign of approval.

another reason given was "Mindjack got removed and that had a worse rating", but looking at the history, it was removed in a batch with nonspecific reasons given, so I think there wouldn't be a problem with re-adding that.

Mindjack was removed for being So Okay, It's Average, with mixed reviews, rather than unilaterally scathing ones.
And yes, one "average" review from a high-profile review site is enough; it implies there are parties that find the game at least mediocre, (and thus not fit for here) rather than devoid of enjoyability (which would be.) I'm canning the entry.

Hold on. According to the Gamespot itself, a 5.0 is "'merely average' in the negative sense. These games tend to have enough major weaknesses to considerably outweigh their strengths." I understand your reasoning here, but Glowsquid also has a point.

I've re-added the following entry:

  • "Wow" (more popularly known by its filename, wow.wad) is a 1999 Doom level consisting of a square room with a hanging body, a BFG 9000 with ammo, a Cyberdemon in a deep pit...and nothing else. Oh, and the walls of the pit have no textures, resulting in graphical glitches. It's certainly one of the most pointless levels for any game, but making it one of the Top 10 Infamous Wads is the author's passing it off as a mission to hunt and kill a wounded Cyberdemon trapped in an "illusio-pit". That's Painting the Fourth Wall an ugly color. Can be viewed here.

Someone removed it in a batch with the edit reason being "removed games that were So Bad Its Good, So Okay Its Average or had mixed reviews", but it has a one and a half star rating and the comments on that doomworld page are extremely vitriolic, so I don't see how it's any of those.

This needs some work.

First off, this sounds awful. The entry needs some fixing. The company that made this made the Jumper game that is here, a bad sign already. The game does have some decent user reviews, about as many as The Last Airbender, so that does not matter. The 360 version has some better critic reviews, so maybe the online is OK, I dunno. This also sold 1 Million copies, but that's probably counting all 3 versions.

Lets split it into 2 parts, the gameplay and the plot.

  • Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal is an awful, buggy, unfinished attempt at creating a game based off the beloved children's cartoons, with zero effort to emulate the series' brand of comedy. It essentially tries to rip off Ratchet And Clank by adding disposable weapons and plutonium to upgrade your melee weapon, though the guns are as unnecessary as the guns in Shadow The Hedgehog (except in some cases where you need a certain weapon to defeat a certain enemy).

Sounds bad. Are the weapons confusing? That just crossed my mind.

The next part seems to drift off into plot rambling.

The plot is unforgivable; some mad scientist guy from one the cartoons who Bugs refers to as Dr. Frankenbeans sends robots back in time to kill the characters' ancestors.

What? Interesting. And by that I mean crap.

When that fails, he creates a giant robot to do stuff. Also for some reason he forcefully enlists Porky by making him drink some stuff (process of which is not actually shown in-game, though Bugs drinks the same stuff near the climax to turn into a giant green version similar to in another cartoon) and later decides to off him before his creation (Gossamer, a not-very-well-known character) performs a Heel–Face Turn for no given reason.

Again, what?

When you reach the final boss, there's no music, and you just need to hit his head to stun him and then keep hitting him.

That should really go in the gameplay part.

And the reason the scientist did what he did? Bugs and others teased him in school for the shape of his head.

Just saying, Invader Zim did something similar in Dib's Wonderful Life Of Doom, where Zim gets revenge on Dib for throwing a muffin at his head. That was pretty funny.

Bugs comforts him about it, they get on Marvin's rocket and he feeds their time machine to Taz, the end.

What the hell?

This Troper had to beat it twice to fathom how bad it was.

I would like to contest the Atari 2600 Pac Man. It's a Porting Disaster, yes; it's an Obvious Beta Obvious Alpha, yes. But the programmer who made it did get a fair percentage of the game mechanics into the cartridge before the game was snatched from him. If you had only heard of Pac Man and never played the arcade game, you can get a little fun out of it. (Trust me on this — I played the Atari 2600 Pac Man long before I played any of the more faithful ports.)

It is also argued that the game sold too many copies to be a failure — at least, The Other Wiki claims it sold more copies than any other game for the Atari 2600. However, some of the cartridges that weren't buried in New Mexico got packaged with post-crash Ataris, so we can't be sure...

This one was removed, but I don't want to start an Edit War:

  • Resurrection of Heaven's Liquor, possibly the worst Touhou fangame ever made. The character artwork is even worse than in the originals (pre-UFO, of course); the music is just painful, which hurts twice as much because Touhou's trademark is good music; the characters are unbelievably broken; the danmaku consists most of the time of random bullets; and, to make it even worse, Aya is the final boss. If the playable characters wouldn't be the Extra Bosses from the original games and Mima the Extra Boss of this one, then there would be NOTHING POSITIVE ABOUT IT. Watch a member of Maidens of the Kaleidoscope being very, VERY close to killing himself.
    • Compounding the music issues, the stage one song gets played in multiple levels — and it's probably the worst of the bunch.

The reason it was cut is because the troper who removed it thought it was an awesome game. Either explain why or I'm gonna add it again.

  • Wolverine for the NES. Take one of the toughest superheroes of the last few decades, strip away his Nigh-Invulnerability, remove his regeneration powers, and instead make him lose health for using his claws. This game is an insult to Wolverine in particular and superheroes in general. Not only is Wolverine vulnerable, but he also doesn't get Mercy Invincibility when he gets hit. I was not removing those entries because I was being a "dick" or a "troll" about it, as you people keep saying. I've simply removed those entry's because I did not think that they were that bad. After all, the fact that I thought that they weren't that bad keeps them from being "so bad it's horrible," right? Either way, I don't think that I should be banned for this. I mean come on-if those movies and games you say are so bad then how come I liked them?

Can you please cite examples of people saying it's not bad at all. One person does not equal "good". There will actually be a person that finds a game on there NOT horrible. That does mean it's not, as this trope is still somewhat subjective.

I'd like to suggest a video game guide section.

For me, it's the Double Jump Books Persona 4 guide. It's riddled with errors, like the same description of Nanako is on Ai's description. It doesn't tell you the correct info or isn't very specific (I had to end up cheating to get to Yumi's summer festival scene). Social links choices have some wrong, and I think it has one choice it says it's right but you reverse the link instead. I wasted $20 on this crap? I had to use the internet from now on when I play Persona 4

If we have 3DS examples, then the folder can actually be justified. If there is no examples, there's no folder. Can't we put a disclaimer at the top about this? "Do not add any folder until it has appropriate examples." That solves the entire problem right there. Or atleast helps.

If people are making edit wars of adding it in and editing it out, it's best just to leave it out as is. Overall, the Game FA Qs score is closer to pure average. 5.4 out of 10. That's out of 350 reviews. To say the least, the horribleness is just exaggerated by many. This game is not good by any means in general, Guilty Pleasures aside, but it only gathered hate early on. Perhaps most of it was do to being new and "sucking", but people actually found it not that bad in the end.

Cult Classics also work that way.

I can actually explain this one. While the game was never good by any means(YMMV on certain parts), most of the "It's just that bad" is a meme, and not from people who've played it. The fact that there's some who think it's better than Sonic Unleashed may say something. Likewise, the game isn't unplayable, just really difficult, because of Fake Difficulty. And yes, I enjoyed the game too. Really, other than a few Scrappy Levels, the Mach Speed Section, and any forced scrolling/forced movement, how were the controls just that bad? Silver controlled well enough. Shadow's gameplay was fine. Sonic still was fine besides the two specific mentions earlier.

Not to mention, the music itself was very popular, the characters have a pretty selectable fanbase. Mephiles may be one of the most unique villains ever. As I said, the "bad" part is more of a meme than an actual fact. To the point that most people whining about how bad the game is has never played it. Which further drives the point home that it's really not that bad. A weak entry, I admit, but it was certainly better than some of Sonic The Hedgehog GENESIS, a terrible port, and Sonic Free Riders. It's closer to a game people love to hate than actually beyond horrible.

Removing there for being So Bad, It's Good.

  • Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing. Awful graphics, broken physics, no challenge whatsoever, and practically unfinished.
    • Alex Navarro (then reviewing for Gamespot) declared that Big Rigs is "as bad as your mind will allow you to comprehend" and further said in his review "Please do not play this game. We cannot stress this enough." In the special Halloween "Frightfully Bad Games" video, Navarro stated "This game received the lowest score in the history of Gamespot, a 1.0. And by lowest, I mean it can't go any lower. We don't hand out zeros, but maybe we should have for Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing." In Gamespot's "Best and Worst of 2004" awards, Big Rigs was given the "Flat-Out Worst Game" award, even though the game was released in 2003. They said that they would use the "YOU'RE WINNER !" trophy as a symbol for the "Flat-Out Worst Game" award from then on, but changed their mind by 2005.
    • So terrible, it left Navarro totally speechless.
    • X-Play refused to give it a rating, arguing that they didn't give out zeros and giving it a one would imply that Big Rigs qualified as a game. It sometimes is disqualified from "worst game" categories because it was literally released with significant parts of the "game" unfinished.
    • Netjak even urged their readers to avoid buying anything else made by the company in hopes of driving them out of business. Didn't work.

  • Plumbers Don't Wear Ties on the 3DO was a rare Western example of a Visual Novel, but it consisted of nothing but still images run through bad Photoshop filters with terrible annoying narration. The only way the player could affect the game's outcome was by selecting an option in a menu screen, and so the game was no more interactive than a standard DVD menu — and the game railroads the player through a single specific sequence of choices. Most of those choices in the sequence causes the narrator to scold the player, even though it's the right one. All other options are Road Coned immediately with Game Over clips, thus it's a complete failure even as an interactive story. Despite this, the game still managed to have control issues — you couldn't select another menu option until the narration had stopped. More puzzling is why the game used the badly-edited images when its intro used Full Motion Video. See The Angry Video Game Nerd's review of it here. The whole "interaction" can be, and has been, easily replicated with video annotations on You Tube!

I believe Big Rigs should be removed again, as it is listed on the So Bad, It's Good videogame page. But I'll take it either way.

The reason both these games are here is because they fail as games. If it's truly unplayable, then that overrules everything else. If Plumbers Don't Wear Ties was a straight movie, then it would not be on this index at all. But it is supposed to be a game...

It has a genuine cult following as can be seen on GameFAQs. A cult following is a pretty good reason to disqualify an entry. At worst, the game could be considered So Bad, It's Good. If some standards weren't held on the So Bad Its Horrible pages, it would just become an endless swampland of personal opinions.

(Also, Video Game Movies Suck is about movies based on games.)

Game FA Qs posters seem to follow the game because it's bad. Countless reviewers since 1983 have held that the game was one of the worst ever made, and it's noted as such on The Other Wiki. Its historical significance as the Ur-Example of bad video games outweigh its minor cult following today. On the reviews page on Game Faqs as well it shows numerous reviews of 1/10. The positive reviews are clearly in the minority. ET has become a shorthand for "bad game" even in wider popular culture.

It can only be called fate. That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder. That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down.

Trying to dismiss any significantly-sized minority group only leads to the rather nasty "their opinion is WRONG" line of reasoning. So Bad Its Horrible is supposed to be for completely irredeemable works; clearly, if elements of the game can attract a cult following, that's pretty far from "irredeemable".

It doesn't really help that most of the accusations of E.T. as the "worst" video game just parrot the myth that it and the 2600 version of Pac-Man somehow "caused" the video game crash (as opposed to oversaturation of near-indistinguishable consoles with the same software, stagnation of said software, Atari's incredibly weak grasp of economics, turn of public opinion linked to a great many more causes than two commercial flops, etc.) and present pretty much only that and maybe a sentence or two on the actual game itself as all the reasoning needed. Then you get into the fact that people will frequently talk about how much they hate something without actually spending any significant time with it (something hatedoms of all kind tend to attract; ask the average anti-Twilight follower if they've actually read through the entirety of the books they bash and more often than not, they'll admit they haven't) and that it's a lot easier for a journalist to reference a well-known flop in their writing rather than get confused stares over referencing Action 52 or something that genuinely could be considered a contender.

To top it all off, I've actually seen a few print retrospectives from professional journalists on the game that mostly hold the opinion that there were decent ideas that got buried under technical issues due to being rushed. Stepping from that to "one of the worst games ever" is a pretty big leap.

As far as Atari 2600 Pac-Man goes: the game itself isn't really that bad as far as that system went. Most of the infamy comes from the fact that it isn't nearly as good as (or even much resembles) the arcade version and Atari stupidly thought producing two million more cartridges of it than there were systems to play it was some viable economic strategy. As noted in discussion above this, the game still sold seven million copies in the end (best selling game on the platform and still a pretty healthy sum even by today's standards) and the landfill was because of gross overproduction.

2. From the main article:

"Important Note: Merely being offensive in its subject matter is not enough to justify a work as So Bad It's Horrible. Cut this and put it here. If it was truly popular, and since I don't think it was outright unplayable (just Nintendo Hard), then it doesn't belong here. But this is a licensed game, so there may be a sliding scale in effect... But I don't know.

  • The NES Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game Heroes of the Lance. Completely random hit detection (it uses the AD&D rules, after all), ugly graphics, a confusing and outright-broken dungeon layout, and a battle system that places the only character with a revive spell (Goldmoon the cleric) at the front of the formation...and first to die under enemy attack. Unbelievably, the game was popular enough to warrant a sequel that was slightly better but still dire.

ETA: If this was premature, then put it back. But we need evidence independent of Seanbaby.

  • Bad Street Brawler is either a hilarious mockery of Double Dragon or the worst beat-'em-up ever made. Only the game "Slashers" in Action 52 was worse. BSB is about a guy named Duke Davis, the "world's greatest rock 'n roll martial artist" (whatever the hell that means). Basically, a guy in a yellow leotard who had a few "fighting moves" that included doing something unsavory-looking to a dog and a duck that looked like he was cowering in fear. The enemies included a midget dressed like a circus strongman and a huge yellow bulldog...yeesh. And the time limits were incredibly strict. The only good part about the game — which was legendary in this respect — was the Zen-like mantra the game pushed on you every few rounds:
"Don't trouble trouble 'till trouble troubles you!"
    • Whoa. Dude. (takes a hit off a bong) That was...so deep!

  • BROS, a knockoff of Super Mario Bros. for Atari computers. Stiff graphics, a jump mechanic that can only be figured out by Fighting Game enthusiasts (in a game that came out long before fighting games were common!), annoying music, and a final level that you have to navigate blindly because the level is all black.
    • BROS is crude, suffers more in comparison with the "real" SMB, and doesn't show off the Atari 8-bit computers well, but to be fair it was written by a one-man hobbyist company long after the format's heyday — and in BASIC! It also had some pretty kickass music.

Re the Coleco Adam:

I used to own one of those, though I don't think it lasted long enough to get recalled. It might not be as good as a Colecovision, but it could play any games made for Colecovision (yes, even the ones that stood alone), so it wasn't a complete failure on for gaming. As long as power was running through the word processor printer, it would be fine...

Now, the Adam as an add-on might qualify. I liked my stand-alone despite its numerous flaws, but I liked using it for word processing. Daisy-wheel printers were considered a feature in 1984. (Problem with a machine with no OS — no way to port unprinted documents.) But if you already had a Colecovision, this probably wouldn't help your gaming needs.

<shrug>

My theory on this:

Games made for Wiis, normal DSes, and Kinect-less XBox 360s should remain under 7th generation. So should 2D PS3 games. PSP and PS 2 games might be best listed under 6th generation even if they're made tomorrow, unless there's been major changes to the firmware between introduction and release...

I would argue that, for the same reason a Wii is a higher generation than a Nintendo Game Cube, an X Box 360 with a Kinect is 8th gen even though an X Box 360 without one is 7th gen. A working controllerless control system is just that revolutionary. By that logic, we in fact do have 8th gen games that can be listed.

(PS Move is probably still 7th.)

New systems released after the 3DS will be 8th gen systems whether they deserve it or not. Thus, so will their games be.

<shrug> We have been treating them that way. And given that many of these systems do have firmware updates, there may be some truth in it...

But a game cannot be significantly more advanced than the system it belongs to. It has to work with the features that are there. The hardware limitations are limiting. Until we get a new vs. of Wii, we will get only imitation HD graphics from it, not the real thing. And there is a difference between a UMD, whatever disc it is Wiis use, true DVDs, HD-DVDs, and BluRays.

If the Wii is truly 7th gen, then an X Box 360 plus a Kinect is 8th gen. Both of them shifted because of their controller schema. PS3s with Move may or may not be. The PSEye camera has been around for a while; the Move controller was a way to make it useful by working around and with its only being sensitive to bright light...

I saw I Spy Challenger listed on the music page, and I noticed there was more about it than just the music that was crap.

So in a failed attempt to find a review that wasn't blatant advertising for the game I played it myself on a rom.

It's a frustrating piece of work. The game relies completely on real pictures, which on the GBA is a daring move, but it just works against this game.

First we get the main game, where you pan around an image in search of things described in a paragraph, much like in the book. The problem is half the items it's looking for are these tiny things that are hard to spot with the limited capabilities of the GBA's resolution of real-life pictures. Then when you actually do find an item you get some weird obnoxious noise that seem completely random. Once you complete this game and you find everything it's asking for you get A Winner Is You and ending credits with the same background as the main menu and with the same terrible music.

The other games are these matching games some of them using real images of objects to match. Sometimes it's not that bad like matching colors, but then you may be asked to match something based off of some other factor, but you cannot quite identify the item because once again, the resolution is low. Also, the game gives you very vague directions as to what is supposed to get matched with what, making the higher difficulties with strict time limits nigh unplayable.

The game is also boring and monotonous, I understand it's supposed to be some sort of educational game for kids, but what good is it if it's not entertaining and the objects are hard to identify to start with?

I'd add it but with the lack of legitimate reviews on this is holding me back because it may just be me. Usually the music agreed to be horrid, but the gameplay itself is usually never addressed.

So the graphics were bad and rendered the game unplayable? I find that impossible to believe. There's other factors like gameplay, controls, concept, or maybe some people just have poor eyesite. I don't find this game that unplayable.

This is for a Game Boy Advance, and it is for a game which requires you to find the visual representation of items. The graphics are directly related to the gameplay here.

I cut this before, but someone re added it.

  • With the exception for Sonic Colors and some of the handheld titles, the Sonic The Hedgehog games that followed the Sonic Adventure Series ports have been Base Breakers at best. However, there is one game that none of the fans can defend: the absolutely nauseating  * Sonic Free Riders. Quite possibly the worst game released to date for the Kinect, and definitely one of the worst non-port Sonic games ever. The soundtrack is sub-par, the two-player is incredibly awkward, and the controls are all over the place. Angry Joe did a great review of it that should tell you everything you need.

Moving this from Western Animation

  • Street Fighter Ride is a virtual-reality program whose awfulness gives The Journey Begins a run for its money. Marginally-better CG at the expense of some of the worst Adaptation Decay this side of Street Fighter: The Movie. It's basically four minutes of Ryu and Ken flying around in hovercrafts as they hunt down M. Bison (who is 20 feet tall in this version for some reason) and pass by a few of the other characters in Street Fighter II fighting their own battles, but none of it appears to matter. Bizarrely, the only thing it gets right is the pronunciation of Ryu's name, a common mistake of Street Fighter adaptations until recently.
    • Incidentally, having experienced it at an actual theme park, it comes off a lot better if you're actually being moved around by the moving seat you "ride" it in. It's nothing that should prevent you from going on an actual roller coaster.

Does anyone know what era this is from? I'm assuming late 4th gen, but I'm not sure.

Need more work on the Mortal Kombat Porting Disaster listings — specifically the later one:

  1. What generation is that Tiger portable gaming system, anyway? Is it closer to Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Color? Is it even listed?
  2. Looking at the Porting Disaster listings proper — the GBA Mortal Kombat listed on this page does not have "technical and graphical limitations" as an excuse, because two other Mortal Kombat games got ported to that system (or rather, one did twice) and worked just fine! If we don't cut all these entries (which I am reluctant to do because the Tiger entry is listed nowhere else yet), then we need to go into more detail on this game in particular.

Cut this and put it here for now. When did these games come out? And are they available separately? Alfa Romeo: Racing Italiano does sound like a good candidate for this, but I'm less sure of the other two.

  • There's a three-pack of PS 2 games that was sold at Walmart for $10. Pirates Legend Of The Black Buccaneer, Alfa Romeo: Racing Italiano, and Ultimate Board Game Collection. Namely, you got a Pirates Of The Caribbean ripoff, a racing game with RPG elements that forgot to include a racing game, and the ability to play family boardgames like Checkers and Backgammon with your family circled around the PS 2 and swapping controllers.

Are you serious?

  • While most people tend to agree that Sonic Riders was sub-par at best, there is no denying that its Kinect-driven sequel, Sonic Free Riders, was a chaotic mess. For those of you who have had the honor of not knowing what this game is, imagine Tony Hawk RIDE. Now, imagine there being no board. Sounds okay, right? Well, imagine having to go through an annoying prerace before every race to calibrate your Kinect. But that's not all. Imagine that the simple act of turning around a corner is a living nightmare because the game often refuses to read your movements correctly. You bounce across the screen, no longer worried about first place, but just so much as finishing the race. By the time you've accomplished that, you would probably have made at least 5 forehead-shaped dents in your wall. To this date, it serves as the lowest-scoring Kinect game on Metacritic, and that's no big surprise.

This is not Mediocre Obvious Beta. That will never exist. The Other Wiki shows two 7.5 review scores.

Having edited the entry to Power Chords: Rise of the Six String, I have these musings:

Before I edited, the entry said that the worst thing about the game was its advertising. If that is true, then that lowers the odds that the game itself belongs here. The ads aren't part of the game...

Seriously, you are not supposed to list something here because of Hype Backlash. What is left in the entry doesn't make it clear that this game is much worse than Guitar Hero or Rock Band, let alone Horrible...

There are good songs in the game — apparently, they are even the real thing and not just covers. Locked songs (which you have to work to get) are normal for this sort of game — even The Beatles Rock Band has one, not counting the DLC — so that's standard, not a problem...

The existence of Easy Mode, and it being easier than the real thing, is also normal; you have to be sure there's no accurate mode before complaining about the easy mode.

And it is hard to believe that a $150 guitar that kinda works in Real Life is as bad as the Tony Hawk skateboard controller.

I need some help here. Some time ago, I deleted this on account of the Metacritic score being too high, around 65.

  • Stormrise deserves to go here. It's easily the worst Real Time Strategy game of all time, with horrible Camera, horrible Controls, glitches as far as the eye can see and the old Disobediant Unit Syndrome taking strong prevailance. Patches that could have fixed some of these issues were cancelled, and so the game remains an unplayable mess. And the ironic thing? The game was made by The Creative Assembly, the same guys who made Total War. Face Heel Turn anyone?

But then there were only three reviews, now the score is much lower with a 42. Is that low enough?

Musings on Tony Hawk Ride:

It is understood that this game is Horrible, and that one of the primary reasons for that is its requiring a controller that is nearly as dangerous as a real skateboard and that doesn't work too well. It is also noted that the publisher of the game is cheerfully ignoring the controller issue, since it does plan to continue the franchise and does plan to continue using that controller. I know people who make sports games love to aim for "realism" even when it adds difficulty, but that takes the cake!

What prompted the musing is that this game was released simultaneously for all three major consoles in 2009. Are they all equally Horrible? Or do the system specs make a difference?

I got a highly inconclusive impression that the PS 3 vs. might be less intolerable than the other vs. (Specifically, the store I checked had the Wii and X Box vs. on clearance, and had the PS 3 vs. at the normal old-game discount.) But, given that the PS 3 is only starting to take off after all this time, there may be other factors.

LJN never made any game - they were just a dummy publisher made by Acclaim to get around Nintendo's limit on games that can be published per years. A Nightmare on Elm Street was made by Rare (yes, that Rare), the Karate Kid game by Atlus, the Simpson games by Imagineering... ect.

Most of their published games are terrible, and they were infamous even before they were featured extensively on the AVGN, Spirit of Speed is often considered the worst game of the Dreamcast, for ex. That being said Spider Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage is an awesome game.

Not really, Love It or Hate It for a video game is in the 70% range. Games like Kingdom Hearts, or Star Ocean. Videogame critics are notorious softies, and a 50% range is considered to be poorly recieved.

Plus, look at what the reviews actually say:

"Floaty, unresponsive and with an odd mixture of under- then severe oversteer, APB ’s cars feel like petulant automotive teenagers, never willing to do what you ask. In a game where you’re expected to drive fast after other cars driving fast – and you are expected to do this a lot – the handling model is wilfully sadistic, forcing you to plan turns a good few hundred metres before intersections."

-PC Gamer

"In my three years of writing for 1UP, APB may be the first game to make me seriously question my sanity. After sitting down with what promised to be an experience full of potential, I walked away from my first few hours a broken man."

-1up.com

"Maybe you’re the kind of person who can play the same Counterstrike map for hours and hours, and you won’t mind paying a little extra every so often for persistent character growth and maps that are much larger than normal. I’m not that person. APB was fun, but not for long enough to warrant me to buy more time, or to even use all of what came with the game. If, six months from now, a great deal of content has been added to the game, then APB may be a great buy. For now, it’s stuck in limbo."

- IGN.com, it's best review, and the easiest to please gaming publication in the world.

These aren't mixed reveiews, the game has been poorly recieved, and it put its own company out of business. That warrants an induction.

The SBIH main page says this:

"A work that is So Bad It's Horrible wraps around the awfulness scale to good, and keeps going all the way back down until it's even more awful than the average victim of Sturgeons Law. These works don't attract proper fandoms and aren't enjoyed in themselves."

From what I saw, APB is a mediocre and mismanaged MMO notable for being an epic Short-Runner. The user rating on the sites I checked (Gamespot, Gamefaq, IGN) is consistently in the mid 60 range. While the gaming press may be heavy on the Four-Point Scale, the reception hasn't been overwhelmingly negative unlike Tony Hawk Ride or Ninjabread Man. Putting its developer out of bussiness is pretty bad but that's mainly because it was in developement for so long, and any significantly long developement is subseptible to be a huge money-sink (See Duke Nukem Forever and Tabula Rasa) It may be poorly-received but garden variety mediocrity isn't what SBIH is for. It is not amazing but not Rogue Warrior/Action 52-bad either, which is what SBIH is supposed to cover...

... On the other hand, it did last only three months. Just be wary that if someone else contest it, don't start an Edit War.

Events during the game include a karaoke scene in which the player must sing into the Famicom's microphone, punch out a yakuza, obtain a treasure map, and expose the map to sunlight for one hour. Yes, you do have to wait an hour, and don't even think about touching the controller during this wait. After that is a hang-gliding shmup stage in which you can only move down, not up. Assuming you figure this all out somehow, you get the treasure, and A Winner Is You. I cut this one before. I will reprint here what I said then (from the archives, complete with that early entry). For the record, "Desert Bus" is that game where you drive a bus through the desert for eight hours real-time...

Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: Cut this and put it here — it's in the same class as Desert Bus, just at the other end of the complexity scale. If it's funny, it isn't Horrible — even if it is hell to play.

  • Takeshi No Chousenjou is a borderline example. Unlike other games on this list, it's a pretty ordinary-looking Famicom game (and damned if that music isn't catchy as hell). Also unlike other games on this list, it was made by a man who hates video games. The game is basically Unwinnable - it can be won, but doing so requires you to do things like sing a certain song at a karaoke bar three times in a row (and you actually had to sing and get it right - the Famicom had a microphone), don't press any buttons for one hour, divorce your wife, beat up some random old man, and - the best part - defeat a final boss with one million hit points. As in, you have to punch it one million times. Of course, making a game that was so stupidly hard it was actually funny was the entire point, so it's hard to say whether the game is horrible or a brilliant work of art.

Cut all of these. They all have average critic scores.

  • The Game Boy Color disaster Yu-Gi-Oh: Dark Duel Stories. DDS was Konami's first US release of a Yu-Gi-Oh videogame, and it was execrable. The game suffered from many problems, the most dire being the decision to screw the rules of the card game upon which it was based. This led to Konami putting all types of fun Fake Difficulty measures, such as almost entirely removing monster effects and Magic/Trap cards, and putting in a frustrating system in which all unused magic/trap cards are automatically destroyed at the end of your turn. It also provided a horrendously-broken Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors system, which is a rich source of Wall Bangers on its own — DDS allows a Kuriboh to kill a Blue-Eyes White Dragon in combat. The game also all but requires Level Grinding to use half the cards in the game; many of them are unusable until you have attained both a high enough Duelist Level and enough Deck Points to fit them in your deck. Your opponents have no such restrictions. Not that you need many high-level cards, since the CPU duelists suffer from massive Artificial Stupidity. The game also had character limits that rendered many of your cards unreadable. The game has an incomprehensible storyline that invoked Continuity Lockout on most US fans. And four of the game's five final bosses required passwords to unlock.

  • There is NO excuse for the horribleness of Yu-Gi-Oh!: Forbidden Memories for the Playstation. In Forbidden Memories, there are absolutely NO effect monsters; tributes are not required for high level monsters; and there are few spells and traps available to the player. This turns the whole game into "monster with the highest attack power wins". At the start of the game, players are given a deck of 37 random crap monsters, two spell cards that only affect about one or two monsters in the deck, and either Dark Hole or Raigeki. Winning a duel nets you ONE card, which turns out to be good only 1% of the time. Trap cards are near-useless in the long run, and there are only about ten of them. Spell cards generally only either power up or weaken a certain type of monster. Later opponents can play fusion monsters as if they were normal monsters, and they have far more powerful cards than you can ever hope to get. You can use the password system to obtain better cards, but you have to buy them with Star Chips earned during the game...and many of the more desirable cards can cost hundreds of thousands of Stars. Long story short, to stand a chance in this game, you need to grind for a very long time. Campaign mode is worse because just one loss - to ANYBODY - results in a Game Over. Cue the Boss Rush. Even the soundtrack can't save a game THIS bad.
    • Yu-Gi-Oh: Reshef of Destruction for the GBA — the sequel to Sacred Cards — definitely belongs here. Sacred Cards was either So Bad, It's Good or So Okay, It's Average: Every other card was a Game-Breaker, the AI was incredibly stupid, and there was a massive Difficulty Spike right at the end — and yet, it still managed to be quite fun. But Reshef? It fixed about 95% of the Game Breakers, which sounds good until you realize that the game was Nintendo Hard without Level Grinding — that is, dueling weaker opponents somewhere around 500 times. Seriously. Oh, and speaking of dueling, it became unspeakably tedious. After every action (summons, sets, activations, attacks, turn ends, EVERYTHING), the field is visibly scanned for continuous effects, taking about two seconds each time. Two seconds doesn't sound unbearable, but it adds up quickly. If you use any continuous effects, then that's three more seconds each time for each effect. For every action. And those continuous effects are essentially the only means you have to stand a chance against the Nintendo Hard opponents. Thanks to Fake Difficulty taken to extremes, they are Nintendo Hard despite having Artificial Stupidity just as bad as the opponents in its predecessor. This is accomplished by making rare cards obscenely expensive to buy, your deck cost raising only a few points per victory, and reducing the amount of prize money you win for beating an opponent. Also, Sacred Cards had the benefit of having a storyline based on the anime. Reshef makes up a mess of a story that includes nearly all Yu-Gi-Oh characters just for the heck of it. It's hard to keep track of what's going on in the plot even for a Yu-Gi-Oh fan.
  • Yu-Gi-Oh: The Beginning of Destiny is a Porting Disaster of the first Yu Gi Oh GX Tag Force game that suffers from lag and lockup. It throws in a glitchy soundtrack. The main feature of the Tag Force Games, multiplayer, has been removed. Oh, you can connect this game to Tag Force 2 (see below) for new stuff. Guess what you get? 10,000 DP and three new cards. Hardly worth it.
  • While the Yu-Gi-Oh GX Series had the Tag Force games, which are mostly good, it also spawned Yu-Gi-Oh GX Duel Academy and Spirit Caller.
    • Duel Academy is an exercise in bad taste. It was released prematurely — Konami released it when only two packs of GX had been released. This results in oddities such as Jaden using a Dragon Deck with only a few Elemental Heroes. Apparently, the development staff assumed that fans would be happier using Japan-Only monsters with 600 attack over Cyber Dragon and Black Luster Soldier. In fact, the only archetype from the GX series you can use early on is Elemental Heroes, which back then were useless. And yet, even the weakest, most pathetic opponents carry Snatch Steal and Mirror Force. You have an excruciatingly difficult game which makes it almost impossible to progress without using the Code Machine to start the game with a decent deck — and many better opponents won't duel you until you progress. Even 100 Puzzles and the ability to change dorms don't help. It's a trainwreck.
    • Spirit Caller takes off from the rather good Nightmare Troubadour and mucks it up. First, the game doesn't let you use any modern monsters for a while despite being much further into GX — and the older monsters are nowhere near as good. It takes forever to get your first spirit. The game's progress is a Guide Dang It!; for instance, duelist levels mean nothing in this game. Instead, you have to duel certain people a certain number of times. The music is atrocious. And, until the second plot event, the only duelist from the show available for a free duel is Syrus.

Most of the argument over it not going here was because it is a Porting Disaster. If one is a horrible game on its own, it should go here.

@Divine Rose 125 Why is that a bad thing?

Because like Glowsquid said, no matter how much a game sounds like it's bad, most of the entries are still playable despite the porting-hack job, so porting disasters are still porting disasters.

All I know is that the arcade original isn't very much liked either. If you really insist on putting Pit-Fighter back, then it should talk about the original version (which of course, you'd need to play instead of just changing the original text a bit) the with a side-note on how the ports were even more terrible.

I need an OK to add the Super NES port of Pit-Fighter. Yes, it has an average score of 1.0 from user reviews from Game FA Qs, but I need to make sure if it's truly worthy of the So Bad It's Horrible trope. It fits seamlessly in Porting Disaster (the fact that Ty is a Game-Breaker, and the fake difficulty in the Super NES port itself is another issue).

Is Pit-Fighter (the SNES port) truly "So Bad It's Horrible," or does it not qualify?

Tag Force 2 is basically just the other games with weird AI. You Tube videos that feature the game (and not in a "This game sucks" sense) are pretty common, and it averages a 60% "average but not terrible" on Metacritic, with a far higher user score. I'd say it's a So Okay, It's Average game with So Bad, It's Good AI. "Worst in a series" and "Among the worst failures in history" are very different things.

O.K., I have finally removed this.

On the other hand, the game did have music by Geoff Follin— something that may be its only bright spot.

There are 3 problems;

1. It is not exploratory about the gameplay.

2. How is it horrible for not making you invincible? By that logic Marvel Vs Capcom and Marvel Ultimate Alliance are horrible.

3. The music is not that good.

I've played the game and it's not that bad. There's also the fact that The Angry Video Game Nerd said that it was better than the first X-men NES game.

Should we remove the Action 52? The criteria is that nothing about the work be passable, but Cheetahmen's music is considered at least "passable".

The music is generally considered the ONLY redeeming quality of a $200 cartridge filled with awful games. Because this is a page about awful games and not awful music, the passable music in the Cheetahmen game can't save it. And the game does manage to ruin it by pausing it every five seconds because the game can't play music and sound effects at the same time.

It can only be called fate. That here. I would again gather the three with the crests. That I should lay my hand on that which grants the wishes of the beholder. That when power, wisdom, and courage come together, the gods would have no choice but to come down.

You can't exactly remove something just because of one saving grace... There has to be an overall quality to it.

Also, don't you buy the video games to, you know play the actual game? It shouldn't be removed just because people like one song off of it.

AnonymousMcCartneyfan Since: Jan, 2001
Jun 20th 2010 at 8:07:47 PM •••

And that would be a good thing...

The reason the Horrible index is on the Darth Wiki and is periodically threatened with deletion is that people fear that it'll be simply another outpost for Complaining About Shows You Dont Like. Ironically, the only way to assure people that it is a trope is to hold examples to very strict standards.

I don't consider the song of the Cheetahmen a redeeming factor, not when it can't be listened to, and esp. not when we have Horrible/VoiceActing. Besides, that still leaves 48 games to keep Action52 here. And on this page, at least, we can argue that if it's literally unplayable, then that overrides everything else.

But there are still borderline examples. And we have to make sure that they're on the correct side of the border.

And also I don't think very many of these lists are all TOO long... And when it goes into Complaining About Shows You Dont Like usually someone goes in there and fixes it. No, Pong was — that and some MUDs. (They would've been MMORPGs, but they were text-based, and there weren't enough people on the 'Net back then for one of the Ms.)

Though, if someone tries to reinstate the Maganavox Odyssey, it might be a good idea to suggest which cartridges were being used in ways not intended by the manufacturer. There may have been good games for the era, and we have no idea which are which.

The thing is, while it is a good idea to give pioneering systems slack, the argument you're using would probably rule out all first-gen consoles, in which case we probably should kill the folder as well...

Remember, Karate for the Atari 2600 is listed — and it was the first fighting game (as far as we know). It's just that the Atari 2600 was completely unsuited to the genre.

AnonymousMcCartneyfan Since: Jan, 2001

It can — some have been grandfathered in, anyhow — but it's discouraged. It can be hard to judge the true badness of a Porting Disaster because many will be mentally comparing it to the original game — which, if it is good, will mean that the game will be more disastrous to those who know the original than to those who don't.

I don't know if we should let any new Porting Disasters in. But if we do, the NES Hydlide is justifiable, as we were calling that one horrible before we knew it was a port.

According to the entry proper, Harvester has unique characters, an interesting premise, and a very effective Tomato Surprise ending. Any of these would be a redeeming factor that would normally disqualify something from being listed as Horrible....

A game can remain listed here despite these things if it is unplayable or fails completely at being a game (see Plumbers Dont Wear Ties). But as it stands, I don't believe this game belongs on this list. It might even be a Troll Game, judging from what I read of it on its own page — deliberately attacking the sort of people who play the sort of game this isn't quite — that is, its own intended players.

If the terrible recycled story which involves the real life wars of the roses with Yu-Gi-Oh characters doesn't piss you off, then the dull graphics and the broken rock-paper-scissors number crunching turn based grid based battle system most certainly will.
