Shown Their Work criticism could be mitigated by a little of Fair for its time.. in 1988, the general public knew pretty much knack-all about autism, and it was only 3 years after Lorna Wing had translated Hans Asperger's papers (1985); Kanner and Asperger had both worked independently - Kanner in the States and Asperger in Germany - in 1945.

The original VHS release of the film in the UK had a piece done by Hoffman promoting the National Autistic Society.

Up till the early 80s, if people knew about autism at all, it was viewed as something childhood-bound. Was only when Rain man was released that autistic-spectrum ADULTS were first known about or understanding started in the general public.
