The plot summary pooh-poohs the use of acoustic modems to transmit a virtual reality experience, which is reasonable enough. I was however under the impression that the device recorded brainwaves, rather than a straightforward high-def video/audio/sensor stream, and that the imagery was being generated by the mind of the person playing back the tape (with potentially lethal side-effects). Perhaps the brainwaves compress really well.
