Is this only for stock phrases describing a trope rather than dialogue? There are some bits of dialogue that come up often enough in different works to deserve their own pages. If, for instance the advertising line "Ask your doctor if medicine X is right for you." becomes common enough to need it's own page it seems reasonable to name it after the dialogue. What would be wrong would be a trope named "Ask your doctor" was about horrible medical advice after a new movie showed a villain convincing people to take psycho serum with this type of advertising.
Hide / Show RepliesTo call it bluntly: Single-Issue Wonk of the wiki's overall webmaster, who has unilaterally cut newly launched pages (not that many, but it's happened just the same) for this very reason.
Me? I don't agree with the decision itself, but I do support the reasoning behind it. (Which may be ironic as I was the primary drafter of this one's YKTTW.)
Edited by Stratadrake An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.I don't agree with this decision either, since using stock phrases and character dialog to name tropes helps make searching for said tropes using the search function easier, and thus helps the trope page be more popular and keep the page from becoming dead, in other words, have hardly anything added to it. However, if that's the rule, I guess that's the rule.
Edited by immortalfrieza^ That's not really true. One of the reasons dialogue titles were disallowed was because statistics showed that most dialogue-like names had failed to thrive within and outside the site.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerEither stock phrases are okay, or they're not. If they're not, then all previous stock phrase pages should be discarded. I just stumbled upon But This Is Ridiculous, which seems to be a prime example of why no more such pages were wanted. Shouldn't the vast majority of stock phrase pages be discarded (keeping the few that really work, of course)?
PS. I'm in the camp of keeping the pages, but if so then new pages should be allowed to be created. This category of pages just doesn't seem worthy of a Grandfather Clause just because they predate the rule.

Hide / Show RepliesYeah, we are trying to get rid of dialogue titled "tropes" or turn them into proper tropes with proper names too. But This Is Ridiculous strikes me as a good Trope Repair Shop case - only 26 wicks and most of the examples are quotations and the description is focused on the quote text as well.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo are we ready for a forum thread or other method to force the mods to either...
1. Delete or rename all pages with Stock Phrase titles, dispensing with all instances of Grandfather Clause protection. 2. Relax the No New Stock Phrases rule. More enforcement to stop simple lists of course, perhaps by requiring all such pages to have a custodian troper to keep an eye on things and stop degeneration.
mudshark: I don't expect Nate to make sense, really.Uh, we don't have to push stuff through quite so one-sidedly. Gradually removing Stock Phrase pages is also on the cards.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanShould we move this to Ask the Tropers or the forum?
mudshark: I don't expect Nate to make sense, really. This just bugs me because now we have an unfinished list of stock phrases. And here I really wanted to start the "My god..." page, which definitely deserves one.
Edited by 216.99.32.45- Having a "list of times characters said X" is about as meaningful as, say, a "list of times characters sat on chairs" — (think about it for a moment).
OK, I've thought about it for a moment, but I'm stumped - is there any fridge brilliance here?
Hide / Show RepliesNope, just another Sink Hole. This page has way too many. (Troper tics... seriously?!?)

9 years later, this site still has plenty of tropes with titles which clearly go against this rule. What really baffles me is that it's constantly enforced in the Launch Pad, but nobody seems to care about entries from the early years of the website. It Is Not Your Time, You Said You Would Let Them Go, Glad I Thought of It, Ow, My Body Part!, etc. Admins should take this matter more seriously.
