I've noticed that some of the pages on the Transformers work+index are no longer actually showing the Transformers listing on their own pages, where they did used to before. Was there some tech change that now requires new ways of listing or something in the code? Reply

I looked around (and did some irrelevant editing) and I think it's because someone recently removed an [[index]] tag in the history; whichever works that are supposed to be indexed need to be between an [[index]] tag and an [[/index]] tag, which some of them aren't (How Indexing Works). I'd fix this myself if it weren't terribly confusing on which works should be indexed and which shouldn't.

Meanwhile, ironically, I know which works need to be indexed but don't know the code. :>

Is there some kind of structure to what links do and don't get picked up? Do we need to worry about pot holes? Is it possible to use multiple sets of [index] tags?

Woo, by our powers combined we can fix this page.

But yeah, most of your questions can be answered better by checking How Indexing Works:

      [[index]]
      * FirstPage, some text.
      * PageTwo
      ** SomeThirdPage
      ** AnotherPage
      [[/index]]
      * A paragraph describing something, using a link to YetAnotherPage.

is the structure, yes, you're allowed to use multiple sets of tags, and potholes work just like Wiki Words do. The page itself used to have the markup, so some works are already on the index correctly.

Aah. OK, it was the potholes I was mainly worried about... apparently the indexing only picks up the very first link of an item.

I think I have achieved success. Yay! Thanks!

This is related to the book House of Leaves and the disabling of strikethrough due to overuse.

In House Of Leaves, something called The Minotaur... existed, or maybe didn't, House of Leaves is kind of a strange book. But in the book's text, Minotaur usually was crossed out with strikethrough wherever it appeared.

So the disabling of strikethrough dinked up the House of Leaves page a little bit. Reply

We have a forum thread discussing this. Please feel free to contribute there; nobody who can do anything about it is likely to read this.

Where? I looked (apparently not hard enough) before posting, and didn't see it.

The thread about strikethrough replacement and so forth is here.

So, now that I'm on summer vacation, I thought I might try to launch some of my YKTTW entries that I never got around to.

Two questions: Some of them are listed as being launched even though they weren't as far as I can tell. What does that mean?

Also, is there proper etiquette for going ahead- like should I do a "bump" first? Reply

First question: I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do you mean that they've been launched off the YKTTW page, but the person who launched them didn't create the actual trope page? In that case, they've been launched, go ahead and create the page.

Second question: If the trope's ready to launch, you can launch it any time, but it's polite to say that you're launching soon and give people a chance to offer last-minute thoughts.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Regarding the first question, I just noticed that under my watchlist there is a YKTTW history section and some of them have like an indication that some of them have been launched. With some of them on the list, I know they were launched (sometimes under a different name), but others of them haven't been launched as far as I can tell.

The launch list says who launched the YKTTW. We had a problem recently with a troper who was launching things because he didn't understand the system, but not creating the pages. The rules for YKTTW are at YKTTW Guidelines, although they may be obsolete for the new system.

Huh. I think that makes it a bit clearer because while a whole bunch of them indicate being launched, I can find no evidence of actual pages created for some of them. I'll read those guidelines and will go ahead and bump some of the ones that seem worthwhile (although I'm curious how the guidelines are different for the new system).

      Thanks for the help.

Edit- I tried bumping one of the fairly old ones, and it doesn't seem to show up under the new YKTTW system. For reference, it was called Thats Not How I Remember It. Maybe I should just re-suggest it?

Deuxhero seems to be having a Single-Issue Wonk problem with BioWare games, particularly Knights of the Old Republic, here and here.

He doesn't seem interested in listening to me, so could I have some help here? Reply

Might be good to report it to the mods...but, wow...I thought his wonk in Deus Ex 3 forum topic is bad enough...this is way worse...

Oh, of all the childish crap. Banned.

      Really?

"This trope obviously doesn't apply for games that make heavy use of a Karma Meter, such as the Ogre Battle series, or most western RP Gs. In those games, your decisions can and will direct the plot, albeit usually on a pre-programmed branch. "

Except the two are not acctually mutally exclusive. There are many instances of type 3 "Examples where there is no "wrong" answer available to choose" in Bioware games ("I understood that" vs. "I know that language" for example).

First example listed for Fake Longevity.

"Some games make you kill hundreds of the same Mooks over and over again. This is called grinding. "

Which is exactly what was put on the Kot OR page as an example.

Aren't discussion pages for this sort of debate? IIRC, edit banned tropers can still use them.

This is not the Discussion page, deuxhero. I lifted your ban only if you agree to play nice with others on your examples.

I'd like to ask for a minor edit in a locked page to those who can edit it (given the Repair, Don't Respond rule doesn't apply to locked pages).

The bottom of the Garbage Post Kid article lacks a link to The Garbage Pail Kids Movie (ironically also a locked page) despite referencing where the trope got its name.

jjliang seems to have a bad habit of making entries with the title of a work in ptitle form, and any character names replaced by underscores. One example from Victoria's Secret Compartment:

    * Disney's Ptitledztlyey0hfvu has the scene where ____ is seen pulling out a dagger to protect herself from the villain's henchmen. Where does she actually keep her dagger in the first place? Her bikini?

Somebody launched a YKTTW of mine without my permission, and now I can't find it. I searched for all the alternative names and even big chunks of text, but it isn't anywhere. Should I just YKTTW it again? Reply

If it was only just launched, it should be listed on the Recent Launches page, along with a link to its current location.

      Which YKTTW was it?

Is it Penalty Game? I found it on Launches, someone had launched like 6 other more-or-less unresolved YKTTWs'. The pages hadn't actually been made yet, so that might've been why you couldn't find it.

(Also, yeah, there's like 7 empty YKTTW launches now.)

Edit: Ninja'd, at least it's not a completely useless reply though.

Alright, so I'll just YKTTW again. I found the write-up, so there's little loss. Was the guy who did all these launches edit-banned? That's not cool, and he needs to explain himself.

EDIT: How do we request people be edit-banned, anyway?

Just post here. Eventually a mod will see it and take action. If it's a forum thing, holler the mods on the offending post.

I don't know if this is the place to ask this question but is there a page for the television show Bliss? It was a sort of erotica anthology show that they used to show edited for American TV episodes on the Oxygen network late nights. I wanted to mention it on Better on DVD, but wasn't sure if I should. Reply

No, there isn't a page, but you can mention it. You should ask these sort of questions in You Know That Show, referred to as "remember that show?" on the troperville drop down menu (the one on the left.) Remember to italicise and pothole the work title like this Bliss. If you want to make a page on it, please make it in the Series/ namespace.

ETA: You can make a page for any work, if it is highly NSFW, use the moderation box to get it put behind the Firewall which Google can't see into.

Is there any kind of policy/precedent for how to set up a work page for a series that doesn't have a series name?

(To clarify: I'm looking to set up a page for three 1 volume mangas that were published separately and only have individual titles. They have the same mythology and inter-related characters and are short, so I was thinking it makes more sense to lump them all together on one page since they share so many of the same tropes, but I have no idea how that works with naming the page since there is no blanket title) Reply

I'd make the page using the first title as the main article; listing all tropes used in the series there, and use the other two titles as redirects. In tropes pages list the title where the trope example comes from. That is what I've done with the Lonely Werewolf Girl and Rivers of London books and no one has come and screamed at me yet.

Thanks. I wasn't sure whether to do that or to go with the unofficial name.

If there is an unofficial name then use that for a redirect as well. Make it as easy as possible for others to find them.

    Quick question.

When we have an index of works, are works on the list supposed to be italicised? I was under the impression they are not, but I see Police Procedural is set as an index and the works have been put in italics. Can someone remind me of the official policy please. Reply

It used to be that they were explicitly not supposed to be, because it broke the indexing software. That's not true anymore, so I'd assume the rule is that you're supposed to do what you'd normally do (i.e., mostly italicize, except when you don't). But there's a lot of legacy stuff that nobody's bothered to change yet...

For the past few months, the user "splitscreen" has been trolling the page for Stop Helping Me!, adding in real life examples that violates the Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement. When a moderator removed the offending entries, spiltscreen would just add it back in, along with a Take That! against the moderator. I would like to introduce a new series and am a little unsure of how to put it on. The Series is called "Zula Patrol", which is -quoting from its website-:The Zula Patrol, a 3D/CG animated children's show, is designed to entertain while promoting an understanding of science and astronomy through engaging character-driven stories, which focus on specific educational science learning objectives. In every episode of The Zula Patrol, the characters demonstrate inquiry-based learning and critical thinking skills. They also model inquisitiveness, observation, self-reflection, and social experiences that encourage collaboration, teamwork, and an excitement for scientific exploration and problem solving.

The Zula Patrol television show is a part of Zula's Pre K - 3rd Grade curriculum titled Zula's Exploration Mission Modules and Afterschool Program titled Zula's Afterschool Discovery Program. Both the school and afterschool programs provide all materials needed for children to view and discuss an episode of The Zula Patrol, read a similarly themed book, complete a similarly themed hands-on activity, and go online to Zula World.com for a technology-based exploration of the program topics. "-www.zula.com/main.php

What the website does not mention is that for every new science principle that they introduce, they break at least one scientific principle. Reply

Click the link to Zula Patrol, and edit away.

Read How To Write A Works Page and YMMV for tropes you should not put on the work page.

Its up, but I expect that it will take days to remember even 75% of them.

All the YMMV tropes have a banner on them telling them they should not be on a work`s page. They will also make the dot of the example red.

just put all the tropes on the work page, make a YMMV/work title page, then move them over as for any other page. remember to move Trivia as well, a list of things that are Trivia is at Main.Trivia.

      EDIT: correcting a grammatical error.

Quick inquiry: is discussion of emulators against site rules? Reply

Discussion as in that they exist or discussion that includes how to find them? If the latter I'd say absolutely don't do it. Anyway, where exactly do you want to discuss them? I'd say the forums are probably the best place. I don't see any reason why a main article would need to discuss them.

No, it's just there's a thread on them and I was wondering about its validity. It's basically "What emulators do you use?", which is kind of legally sketchy, IIRC.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to be saying that we actually use them.

      Why not?

Because confessing to crimes is not good? I'm pretty sure most sites with user input have a rule saying "don't use this site for illegal stuff."

I was under the impression that talking about emulators is not illegal, but talking about ROMs is.

It's a fine line. We probably don't want to be seen as abetting the download of ROMs but I don't see any harm in merely discussing emulation. It's similar to the difference between discussing legalization of marijuana and telling people where to buy it.

    Controversial question.

I added an image for my own article about a former Youtube Poop-er, I Am The Gang. I used the (in)famous custom sprite of Morshu the Shopkeeper, modified in order to show him Flipping the Bird (both birds, at that) - that is, the very same he started to use (hence the use of it as a page image) before it was used by other "poopers".

The only problem with that image is, the "birds" in question are shown frontally. So I have to ask: is the disclaimer I wrote within the caption for the image enough... um... enough of a disclaimer in order to clarify the image is not aimed personally at those who browse the article?

Mind you, the very same shot of Morshu appears in the image for Youtube Poop as a whole, too. Reply

I don't really see it as being a problem; I especially don't see how someone could interpret a wiki article as flipping them the bird. I guess we shall see if any complaints arise.

What the hell happened to the TroperTales pages for PerverseSexualLust? Reply

From the looks of things it appears they were deleted and locked. It seems pretty obvious, honestly, don't know what there isn't to understand about that.

Why? Because it has nothing to do with tropes, and adds nothing to the site except for the image of tropers as complete lunatics. The entire Troper Tales namespace has been under scrutiny in the past few months, and may be moribund.

If you want to talk about how hard Squidward makes you, get a livejournal or something. There are other websites besides this one.

Or to put that in a slightly nicer way, copy the remaining ones to Fetish Fuel Wiki.

Sorry, I admit, that was rude. I was trying to explain why the deletion was a good thing and suggest an alternative to vent for whatever PSL stuff he wanted to talk about. Could have been much more polite, and I apologize.

You can use the wayback machine or Google's cache function to find the rest of them if you want to copy them to Fetish Fuel wiki.

I think we need a trope that's pretty much PSL but less...sexualized. And then put that on fetish fuel wiki.
