Is there a trope for platformer/FPS games where the character has to move vertically to advance through the game rather that horizontally.
Most 2D platformers make the hero move forward; ie; Within a screen you start to the left side and then make your way to the right side to go to the next screen. Similarly in most 3D platformers/shooters have most of the movement within a level is forward. The character might jump up and down platforms but the idea is to move ahead.
I seem to remember some 2D games where the character has to jump from platform to platform to get to the top of the screen to advance to the next level. I was reminded of this because I picked up Halo recently and I was playing the level where the Master Chief has to fight down a series of stairs, and then fight his way back up the stairs to get out. Is there a trope for this?
Not to be confused with Vertical Scrolling Shooter. In a Vertical Scrolling Shooter the character is moving forward. "Forward" is just oriented to be towards the top of the screen. The trope that I am looking for is from the POV of the character not the player.
