Magichange is great for grinding up other monsters, at least in 4, and I really like some of the moves and evilities it offers. It just depends on how much of the map is left.

For my part, I have a hard time adjusting to every other tactical rpg because my Disgaea instincts murder me. My sense of tactics frequently amounts to, "Everybody pile out of the deployment area as fast as possible and stomp them before they stomp us," and that's served me well in Disgaea and only Disgaea.

Any suggestions for a starting party in Disgaea 5? I'm not necessarily looking for efficiency.

  • One person try to keep it under 10 characters - trying to level more than that gets cumbersome
  • The game suggests at least one healer, and I tried this last time I played but... it got a little dull. They get stupid XP boosts just from healing people sure, but it got dull
  • One person said do the whole story with guests only, and keep things fresh by switching out characters when they rank up
  • Or I could do uniques only. I can't remember all of their names but Killia, Sera, Magnus, b-tchface, prinny girl, wrestler guy, samurai chick, and dragon dad all seem to fill the basic roles
    • But early on that would mean only using 2-4 characters per map
    • which could definitely make the game more challenging I suppose* I was thinking about doing a Nuzlocke-type of run, get rid of characters if and when they die and level them back up, or cheat and hire them at a higher level
    • get rid of their gear too... but with all of the junk you get from progressing through the story maps that seemed like it's get annoying if I had to scroll through the item list every time and reequip people, or constantly throw out junk every battle

Disgaea 5 with only the story characters is a good time (meaning uniques + the bosses you get to recruit). Maybe just use a couple generics until they fill out.

IIRC you can send your excess characters to explore other Netherworlds, which keeps them competently leveled.

I generally only play Disgaea games with story characters, maybe one mage and then some filler I don't level for throwing my party and enemies. It's not difficult given how strong party members are.

You can always use the Master-Servant bond to give your unique characters generic abilities. That's still a thing in Disgaea 5, yeah?

If you absolutely need to use Generic Characters, Maids are surprisingly effective. One of their skills lets someone who just executed an action take their turn again.

After he's got some levels, I usually end up using just Killia.

How much is "some?" I can't see using just Killia against mobs of those slime monsters, or against mages.

I'm thinking I'm just going to go Killia/Magnus/Sera/Christo for now. But it feels awkward leaving the rest of the party. That said, it does feel more "natural" to just pick up the other uniques throughout the story since their levels seem to be adjusted to about where you need them to be.

Neat. Now I have no reason to get a PS4.

Nuts. Will Nippon Ichi just skip over Disgaea Dimension 2 for PC stuff? I think they got greedy on the DLC for the game on PS3.

I guess a note, the remake seems to be using updated designs for classes. So no male thieves or anything. Don't ask about what happens to Striders and such.

INB 4 they replace the Striders with Sages and give Land Decimator to the Majins tongue

Also I hope the reference to 4 implies that the remake includes characters from other games (besides those that already appeared like Adell, Rozalin, Majory, Prier)

I'll be honest here: I actually liked the look and tankiness of the Galactic Demons.

More scans, just because. I think the past game parts are there just to discuss the legacy of the series.

I guess they are also bringing demons who weren't in original Disgaea here like Rifle Demons. Might be replacing Galactic Demons. Though they seem to have brought back Faeries.

Few more. At least EDF Soldiers are back.

Well, darn. At least Spirits are making a return. I actually hated how the Faeries replaced them in 5.

I can see a slight chance that both would appear in this game or that Fairies would appear as DLC (considering that certain staple classes didn't appear since 2 or later)

You know, when I was playing 4 and fighting against the Galactic Alliance or whatever they're called, I was kind of wishing that the game had Galactic Demons with deep robot voices to fight alongside the Androids. One thing I think Disgaea games could do a little better is give us more of a feel for different factions we run up against, you know? Usually, when they want to hammer home that we're fighting a particular faction, there's just like one class that represents it.

EDIT: Oh, man, do you think that the Earth armada will have the Disgaea 4-style mechsuits, if they're going with updated designs? Probably not, but it's an interesting thought.

It's allegedly not a mechanics update, which strikes me as being a big mistake.

1 is easily the worst one of the lot on that front.
