Wasn't Negi's old village to be implied to be pretty much a bunch of hicks who for the most part probably wouldn't have cared if Negi had died in a well? (I mean, he IS seen as having to take care of himself for the most part when he's only like 6 after Nekane goes away. Any decent neighbor would have taken him under their wing and made sure he wouldn't keep trying to get himself killed. And that's the son of the supposed hero of the village! We also see he's bonked in the head for just letting an ermine off a trap, when he's around that same age. I always have assumed they were, all in all, a gaggle of hillbilly creeps, it's just Akamatsu generally gets cold feet when it comes to truly portraying mankind at their worst. Sure, he keeps implying it, especially of late, but always ends up whitewashing over it anyway).
Bottom line, if given to choose between an intolerant religious figure and a group of eccentric foreigners, I'm sure they'd pick the bigot jerk every time.

@Marq Hmmm... Where to begin...
Annoying Anglican: You might be able to assemble a "Reason You Suck" Speech after multiple exposures to the man, if only because you'd have to ask Nekane about the Anglican faith, and Do The Research on the matter.
He is ALREADY widely ostracized by every sane person where we will be living. He is beyond caring at this point.
He is almost as old as God, at least in physical appearance. Him punching you might result in a bruise. On his hand.
As for that snippet...I know it has been a while since it was mentioned, but the house is in Neath, Wales. Not very far from the major city of Swansea. It is similar to my situation, in that I live near the large city of Joplin, MO, as well as living just outside of another fair-sized city. But I am still considered to be out in the country. Matter of fact, there is a large hay meadow across the road from my house.
A house with 18 people in it will require LOTS of supplies. Weekly shopping runs for a normal family of 4 or 5 will be replaced with either HUGE shopping trips, or more frequent trips.
Negi is mildly obsessed with suits. I think it is safe to assume that Nekane influenced him in that regard. I myself do not wear a suit, nor would most people in the house. Therefore, Nekane is going to see it as her personal duty to 'dress us up' to help us appear to be proper gentlemen.
Think of it this way: You've mentioned that your parents are a little overbearing, IIRC. Now try to imagine Nekane dragging you into a department store "just to try something on that might look good on you." It would be as bad as your mother doing the exact same thing.
Pack mule is one thing. Fashion model is something else.

Madman with a box? I'm a madman with a semi, a pretzel bender and a Heart of Gold!Wow. All of a sudden I'm glad I'm not with you guys.
I am fortunate, as I do like wearing suits, and am also more likely to go buy my own supplies than rely on other people to do so for me.
himitsu keisatsu seifu chokuzoku kokka hoanbu na no da himitsu keisatsu yami ni magireru supai katsudou torishimariThe Anglican Church stands for Gothic architecture, because it's kind of given up on most of its other principles by now.
I'd also toss in some stuff about the absolute numbers of Roman Catholics who attend church in the UK being higher than the numbers of Anglicans, despite it being the supposed majority religion.
Nous restons ici.@Annoying Anglican: @ Marq: Hardliners can't be reasoned with. Extremists can only be dealt with using extreme measures.
...
Holy shit, where did that come from?
@Nimrod: My resentment toward being made to model clothes is a thing of legend, second only to my resentment toward that goddamn Myna bird.
@ Annoying Anglican: Which is why we first employ a campaign of positive press toward ourselves with the local village. Considering we ARE a group of 15 dudes of varying degrees of burly, I'd imagine there are a number of things we can do in order to improve our social image.
Believe me, when the old ladies talk about how helpful the nice young men down the street are when it comes to broken faucets and snow shoveling, they could care less about what the local hard-nosed pastor has to say.
And I DO speak from experience
I know you all miss meA house with 18 people in it will require LOTS of supplies. Weekly shopping runs for a normal family of 4 or 5 will be replaced with either HUGE shopping trips, or more frequent trips.

Self-interest and hatred... these twisted notions distort society into something ugly... I will take these distortions, this twistedness... AND DESTROY AND REFORM IT!
... That's it. When I start sound like a really pissed-off Setsuna, it's proooobably a good idea to take a break from Gundam 00 for a while.
Your selection of pants is not significantly worse than mine (jeans emphasis, with cargo shorts as an occasional summer alt)
I would imagine that he's referring to the 15 of us, Nekane, Neig and ANYA
I know you all miss meI was not aware that Anya was a member of our household.
I assumed
I know you all miss meI only ask whoever is writing me to make clear I don't like Anya, and I don't approve of her ever ending up with Negi.
I honestly hadn't even thought of Anya. Memorable little character that she is.
Any real objections to having her in the house?
But everyone has forgotten about that one guy that fell from the sky.
Madman with a box? I'm a madman with a semi, a pretzel bender and a Heart of Gold!...Who fell from the sky?
Doesn't Anya live in the Meridiana school dormitory?
Nothing said that she lived there all time since before the village's destruction, right?
... I like suits so very much. Especially those "nodad" things. I'm trying to determine if I would actually join any people that I hear are planning to shop for clothes of that sort, or if I would rather help Anemoi fix things.
I've found that snippet and read it again. What I want to say is, Chisame-as-a-vampire acquiring minions for making them cosplay? I'd read that.
(page 3125, if anybody wants to find it quick)
Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.Approximately 11 hours ago, my hard drive spontaneously self-nuked.
That sucks, Eva. I wish I could give advice on it, but I'm not familiar with these sorts of things. How'd it happen?
I don't know. I shut the lid so it'll hibernate, go off to bed, and then a minute or two later the computer lets out a loud beep. I get back up, and it says there's no device to boot from. I fiddle with it for a few minutes, give up and resolve to check it further in the morning, still no luck. I take it in to the local shop here in town, and am told that they can't get the hard drive to boot up or anything, so there's no way to retrieve any of the data that was on it, either. And while the technician said I might be able to get results by going to some other company, doing so would cost 500 USD. I have about 8 USD cash at this point, and my income is effectively zero. So at this point, I basically have no options but to hope that a laptop with Windows 7 will somehow find its way under the Christmas tree this year.
At least I still have a college-provided laptop that I'm using to do my schoolwork…
@Eva: I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you can recover most of your data.
@SCM: Out of everypony in Equestria, why Celestia? (In any event, why not? Could be fun)
EDIT: I'm really sorry, Eva.

... Dammit, now I am starting to get paranoid about my own data... and I have over 3 terabytes of it to worry about!
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
I don't mind as long as you make a point of delaying saying that until after the priest takes his leave (assuming that you are present, of course). No sense in undermining my attempt to shut him up, right? Though I will also point out that I was talking about the pagan Romans who took offense to Jesus Christ's preaching of Christianity and sought to execute him instead of resorting to a more civilized way of dealing with the issue.
... You know, come to think of it, I have a question for Uber Nimrod about this snippet: Where did you get the impression that I'd be grumbling about being a veritable pack mule for Nekane's shopping outings?note
