Obscure bands. Awesome bands.:

Because the Post-Punk Revival/The Killers weren't enough 80's nostalgia
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sunn 0))), Earth, Khanate,

All are amazing at creating ambient soundscapes, I wish things like this were more well-known and respected.

Those are all pretty well-known as far as drone bands go.

Although GY!BE is more post-rock than drone.

But whatever. They're awesome.

Did they do anything else that didn't sound like F♯A♯∞?

Also, Electric Six... anything that's not their first album. Don't get me wrong, Fire is their best album yet, but still.

Why I frequent those music blogs:

Kind of shoegaze, apparently, are those Sleepy Vikings from Florida.

And seemingly more extreme than the Polysics are Peelander-Z. Just the lyrics, "how would you like cook your steak / medium rare" are enough for me. out to lunch.

Pretty much every band I've been into for the last 8 years has been obscure. Here's just a few:

The Kovenant

And One

Das Ich

Oh brother, not that!
^^^Wow, Sleepy Vikings are really great.

Oh Yeah?
Controlled Bleeding, avante-garde industrial noise band. They use unusual instruments, like cement mixers, feedback, and coughing. Not too obscure at its time and within its genre, but more so now.

185 introverted Insomniac, Thu, 9th Sep '10 7:22:18 AM from Wandering in the Void
-Profugus Mortis Blackguard, a melodic black metal band with symphonic influences.

- Bal-Sagoth, a symphonic extreme/epic black metal band. Their lyrics are a little too long.

I'm not a fanatic, thank you very much. You're just wrong.
Strong Black Vine
Micachu. Jewellery is some awesome experimental pop.

The Go! Team. Yeah, you might recognize their song "Get it Together" (used as the LittleBigPlanet theme), but both of their albums out (Thunder, Lightning, Strike/Proof of Youth) are really, really good and underrated.
"This grass feels funny," Kirby thought. "It feels like...pants."

Thunder, Lightning, Strike is a very good album indeed.

Bad Rabbits. I just ended up doing security for a show they opened up at a local college campus and thought they were pretty cool. 90's New Jack/R & B meets funk meets rock, basically. They've got an EP up for free download on their site if you want to check it out.

^^^Go! Team are so good live.

Hard to get more obscure than a local support band.. last night I thought Pope Joan were rather good all round. New wave influenced.

Catching up with blog archives, I noticed The Mynabirds the other day on Music For Ants, "folk, alt-country, and gospel sounds and recalling artists like Dusty Springfield and Cat Power." Good stuff. out to lunch.

Just recently entry-pimped them into Stupid Statement Dance Mix, but TAS 1000. Basically a band member bought a used answering machine and discovered that 1) the design of that particular model made it easy to loop and otherwise play around with messages, and 2) it had a tape inside that was already full of decade old messages for someone named Marta. So the result was of course catchy full-band songs based around loops of odd answering machine messages. has their only album, and the catchiest songs are "I've Been Delayed", "I'm A Truly Fully Licensed Hair Stylist" and "Protein Shoes.

Röyksopp won an MTV award for best music video and were nominated for a Grammy.

The Knife won several Grammis and got an AOTY from Pitchfork.

Not obscure by any stretch of the imagination.

(*Reads over JHM's list*) How are The Legendary Pink Dots obscure?
Would Machinae Supremacy be considered obscure?
Watch A Serbian Film. I dare you.
