A couple of days ago, a virus got past my (now former) security (Norton), practically criplling my ability to get to the Internet. 2 days (and many hours of research later), I figured out the problem (it was the Vundo trojan, it easily exploits Norton), and so far, my computer seems to be fine. After I changed my security and spyware protection, the glitches seemed to have stopped, but when I got onto this site, I've gotten 2 pop-up ads from here... is anyone else getting pop-ups, or is Vundo still lurking deep within my system? Please help, as I don't have a recovery CD for my copy of Windows...

No pop-ups for me.

I've had brief couple-minute-long periods of not being able to go anywhere on the site, though. And only on this machine, I think.

Nooooope. This maybe should be in Wiki Talk or Tech Wishlist?

Hmm, I seriously hope Vundo isn't still lurking on my machine, as I can't afford to have it fixed or replaced... also, I seem to be getting ads that say "Surprise her with a bigger penis"... O_O oh God... sad

No popups for me, either.

I think you've still got something on there. If you don't have them already, pick up Spybot along with either Ad Aware of AVG Free. They can really get the job done.

Well, according to my knowledge of Vundo  *, it's known for causing popups. So if it's still there you may need an OS reinstall. Here's a list of symptoms, so see if your comp has any of those.

You'll probably need this, since apparently most anti-virus progs can't touch it.

already got Spybot, AVG and Malwarebytes on here, and they've all come out clean... if I'm still infected, it must be really, really deep...

EDIT: I've already run Vundo Fix, it turned up nothing... but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try again...

Damn. Well, good luck.

Running it again, and I've figured as an absolute last resort, I might need to reformat and migrate this computer to Ubuntu... don't want to resort to that, though

Not coming from us, for sure. The only ads we place are from google, and they don't do popups or penis-enhancer ads. Run Spy Bot Search and Destroy — it frequently has virus/bot signatures that nobody else has, yet.

Well, after almost 3 days of trying, I seem to have finally defeated the virus! evil grin Unfortunately, some damage is permanent: Disk Defragmenter and System Restore are useless now, and the system still occasionally freezes during startup, but other than that, everything else is perfectly operational now! grin I now have Spybot S&D, AVG and Malware Bytes on here, it should be a lot safer than Norton...

You can probably get those utilities from Microsoft online, but I don't know for sure.

http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag is a third party disc defragmenter, so if you need to, use that. System restore is gone for good, though.sad

Well, I don't need to worry about any of that stuff not working anymore, as I don't use Windows anymore... I got Ubuntu tongue

I did the exact same thing. I wound up going back to Windows XP, because I got tired of the cruddy flash support, and having to tweak WINE for every game. A nice reformat and Vundo was gone.
I Pity Nobody.
The system doesn't know you right now, so no post button for you.
You need to Get Known to get one of those.
