[up] Um... I don't know what that is... I was thinking about referencing Ender's Game. >3>

(I still need to figure out linking. >///<)

What does "Problem Sleuth" have to do with Bees?

One of the mechanics for battle techniques is retrieving nectar which is turned into honey and deposited into combs.

I'd courtesy link it, but I can't find the page.

Is this a video game, or just some web video?

Neither. It's a webcomic. Sorta. You'd have to read it to understand and WHOAOFFTOPIC

Problem Sleuth is a rather silly webcomic by the maker of Homestuck.

Aaand ninja'd.

Um... Sorry, I don't think I could put it in there just because it involves honey... ^^'

Well, it involves honey and honeycombs and fractal-y stuff. But I agree with you that it might sound forced.

Well, the reason I wanted to do Combee/Vespiquen was because of a theory somebody I Roleplayed with once had. That a Vespiquen would have a three-lobed brain, due to the three brains in each Combee. (Each Combee is three larva stuck together)

[up] That would make a lot of sense. Sort of like Beldum -> Metang and Metang -> Metagross effectively fuses their brains?

Yeah. Combee start out as individual larva, then they eventually pair off into threes and fuse (in a way I'll work out later, probably something to do with wax).

And the only reason the Females evolve is because they have the Red Gem on their foreheads that provide them with the energy to evolve. (Could be an organ as a Combee, that becomes Gem-like as a Vespiquen, that might make more sense.)

Is it even a gem? It might just be a gland that secretes a bunch of hormones necessary for evolution in this case...

On Vespiquen it is a Gem. I mean, it lets it use Power Gem, so I would assume it's one. Prehaps after evolution, the female Combee organ... I dunno, burns out and hardens, forming something like a gem. Maybe something involving Keritin or Chiten.

Maybe female Combee only have one gem because they're actually two male drones plus one female.

[up] Well, that's the thing. It's three larva fused together. The top two larva will be the flight units that must syncronize their wings to fly, and the bottom larva will be the main unit, that does most of the thinking, and collects necter for Honey.

Only Female larva have that organ, is what I meant to say. The other two male larva just carry her around.

So why are there so few females in the wild? Aren't workers usually female?

Omega74 Since: Nov, 2011
#6746: Jan 17th 2012 at 8:31:07 PM

How about this. There must be some sort of nervous system link between the Combee segments, so maybe the organ provides the energy to fuse their three brains and evolve?

Omega74 Since: Nov, 2011
#6747: Jan 17th 2012 at 8:33:08 PM

Well, there's a low Female-to-Male ratio. They're rare because so few Female larva are born. It's even possible for there to not be any female larva in a batch of eggs.

Omega74 Since: Nov, 2011
#6748: Jan 17th 2012 at 8:38:00 PM

Also, most of the workers are Male. Due to their low numbers, females that work usually work inside or close to the hive.

Swampertrox Since: Oct, 2010
#6749: Jan 17th 2012 at 8:38:19 PM

[up] Worker bees are always female. If the only reason for that is a low female to male ratio, meaning the proportions aren't just unbalanced where you can encounter them, then the entire population would starve from inadequate food supply.

That would obviously not be the case here, as Males and Females both do the same jobs.

Well... What do real worker bees do? Do they go out and collect necter, or do they do stuff around the hive?
