I was just visiting the Dream World for the Mamoswine event, and I had an idea for how to deal with it. It'll hopefully work, since we aren't Doing In the Wizard completely.

It's a alternate plane of existence somehow influenced by the neural activity of sleeping Pokemon in the normal world, similar to a hybrid of the Distortion World and the plane of Dal Quor from Eberron. It can only be accessed through dreams, but by harnessing the power of certain Psychic Pokemon (mainly Musharna) others can study what goes on there.

The plane is inhabited, unlike the Distortion World. However, there only seem to be Pokemon, and only those of strains that are normally incredibly rare. These Pokemon are known to cross over to the normal world through a forest in Unova known as the Entralink, but it's not known exactly how it's accomplished.

So, what do think? I thought the "alternate dimension" thing would be OK considering we have things like the Distortion World.

You could justify it by saying that all pokemon do possess some latent psychic abilities that form this semi-physical plane through the combined power of all sleeping 'mons. Munna's family happen to be the only pokemon so in touch with this realm that they actually can make some of it manifest, Dream Mist being a general stream of matter from the Dream World. Just claim that the formless mist is the best an individual Mushrana can do. Only with a large group or artificial assistance, can they actually bring physical items and pokemon from the realm. You could use Fennel's line about how experimental her work is to justify why it's not used in a more practical scale.

It's entirely possible that Munna's line actually originated from the Dream World. Maybe the original population manifested after some massive psychic disturbance and have lived as normal pokemon ever since, while keeping their innate connection to the Dream World.

You could also use the "innate psychic abilities" to justify the Elemental Baggage problem that most pokemon attack have that our biological explanations can't fully account for. Just say that most pokemon aren't skilled enough to use them for more than enhancing what they already had adaptations to use with actual psychic moves being the exception.

[up] That sounds pretty cool. I may very well incorporate it.

EDIT: Tangent128 and I discussed Pokeball revisions in the chat; he should post his ideas soon.

massive psychic disturbance

like, say, Mewtwo? I can only imagine that a mind of that power suddenly popping up on the psychic landscape would qualify as a psychic disturbance.
6506 Umbramatic16th Dec 2011 10:53:03 AM from Orbiting WAAPT
[up] That would make sense, actually.

Thanks for the ideas, guys, though I probably won't be able to work on it until after the Kami trio.

Then again, I do have almost a week... what would the format be for this? Same as a geography article? Or something completely different?

Kinda like a geography article, modified to account for being a whole parallel universe. tongue

Templates are flexible, yeah. As long as the article is written from an in-universe perspective.

Anyways, I've mentioned before my intent to overhaul the Pokéball article, among other things to use a pocket-universe explanation instead of the extra-fridge-logic-y digitalization explanation.

Two possible reasons for why Apricorns would have a pocket universe inside them:
  • Apricorns form a pocket universe to hold their seeds, then detach it from our world completely to eventually seed Apricorns in another universe
  • [This one was found on another site, currently looking for the reference] Apricorns are carnivorous plants that trap their prey in a pocket universe; dead ones used as Pokéballs obviously no longer try to digest their occupants, but retain the bigger-on-the-inside effect.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?
6508 Umbramatic16th Dec 2011 01:17:37 PM from Orbiting WAAPT
[up] Thanks.

I'll repeat what I said in the chat: I wasn't sure what to go with for the Pokeball article, since the first explanation raises some questions (If they propagate across universes, why don't we see them in every fictional work ever, or even in our world?) while the second is a bit too creepypasta for my tastes.

After thinking about it though, they could just spread to alternate universes in the Pokemon franchise (anime, main games and others in that universe, Mystery Dungeon, various fanfic universes such as this one...), so I now support Explanation 1.

EDIT: long as we maintian the caveat that the in-universe scientists aren't sure of the true function.

I don't really like the whole "pocket dimension" thing. Maybe Apricorns just cause spacial distortion inside of them?
They call themselves seamstresses -Feet of Clay
You complete me.
The differences are just semantic at that point aren't they?
[up] The difference is that one is a separate dimension linked through the apricorn (like the TARDIS), and the other is basically a miniaturization ray (like the Tesalecta).

I like the digitization thing better than just tossing in fruit with random alternate dimensions. It requires a good deal less rationalization given that we already know the teleportation technology exists. The other way sounds far too much like excessive handwaving.

Digitalization is a gamebreaker and raises too many ethical, tehcnical and physiological issues (like the whole thing about cloning, how and why can objects and therefore humans be stored inside Pokéballs, etc). We have agreed before that manipulation of space properties is the better alternative to go with.

Also, I'd support the TARDIS idea, although I feel we would achieve an observable improvement on stability on theories and implications going by the miniaturization (or space stretching?) approach.

I'm having trouble thinking up how the Dream World was discovered... I've decided it involves Musharna, but I'm drawing a blank from there.

Perhaps a Musharna told a Solosis line member about it, (Who are known telepaths.) who then told their trainer about it.

Any chance that experiment Devon was performing and failing at in the anime to reach into Pokémon's dreams had even a modicum of success?

[up] That was also in the games, but I think we should wait until the 3makes (Which is when I'm certain that it'll be used to give us Dream World access) to make any statements.

Hmmm...I know it's been a while since I dropped out of this, but are you guys still waiting for the inevitable Gray version to come out before doing anything related to Reshiram and Zekrom? Because I've got a partially completed article on Zekrom somewhere in here, and it's vaguely worded enough that it shouldn't be too hard to integrate whatever new information will be revealed in the third version at a later date; I'd just need a few days to finish it up, and then I'll be able to post it.
6522 Umbramatic16th Dec 2011 05:22:23 PM from Orbiting WAAPT
I'm gonna go with rmctagg's explanation, though Devon's research should definitely be used at some point in the likely event we get RS remakes.

EDIT: [up] Sounds good to me, but you should wait for Silent or Tangent to say something, I guess.

In what regards to the Zekrom entry, I'd suggest you showcase some elements here (via pastebin) so that we can compare and think how much should we keep for a pre-3makes prerelease. Since we don't know when will the 3makes be to begin with.
