The PokÚdex - Extended Fanon Edition:
nonarySpadeHold on though- are we operating under the pretense that Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova are just regions in the real world, or on a different planet?
Your army sucks. It's on a separate world entirely. With its own geography, history, and ecosystems. Any references to real world places were pretty much exclusive to 1st gen, and can be chalked up to early installment weirdness.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!
nonarySpadeIn that case I see no reason why mundane fauna would be necessary. However, if the real world is involved...
Outer CloysterIn regards to the debate on real animals etc., I am not touching that with a 10 foot pole. As for a city, I've decided to do Fuschia City. Any ideas people have will be very welcome because I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, especially regarding history.
Guess Who...?Well, I'd say to pull from its real-world inspiration if you're short on ideas. But I'm sure that Silent would probably brick me for that considering his attitudes towards Creator Provincialism and what Kanto as a whole is generally seen as paralleling. Hmm... Perhaps you could start with what we know about Fuschia from the games? I mean, they do seem to have a bit of a ninja tradition.
Hard Boiled Detective Since 1985
dy/dx@Umbramatic: I like the Spearow buff, yes. Maybe have the article's voice show a little more interest (like, one sentence) in the semi-synchronized evolutions of mated Spearow pairs. Have not had time to properly read Rattata yet, will do so tomorrow. Fuchsia City... the zoo might be worth a short comment on.
Conversation is a contact sport.
Outer CloysterI was considering pulling something or other from real world history, but I'm not sure where to begin. There's a ninja tradition, certainly. What would create something like that? I don't know about that sort of stuff. And there's a zoo. Maybe there was a university or some rich eccentric back in the day if the zoo is a traditional thing? I mean, private animal collections were the first zoos, weren't they? Hmmm. Dumb question, but are wealthy ninja families an invention of Anime/Manga or did they actually exist?
You complete me.It's an alt-Earth though, the Geography is identical just exaggerated. Why the hell would think it took place anywhere near the real world. You could use the Feudal Ninja-Cities of Japan as inspiration. I'd also ks what this Kanto controversy is ll about.

The RazruchityelIs there any particular reason no articles have been written for the 5th gen Pokemon? If so I think I'd like to start on one of those. Also what are we using as a basis for things? Just the pokedex entries or can we incorporate elements from the Anime too? I'm also guessing that once I choose a pokemon I should research the closest equivalent real world animal or read some of the legends if it's based on a mythological creature. If you fit most of the main series games together you could get a fairly accurate representation of Japan. I'm guessing that, along with references to America in the first gen, is why people believe the Pokemon World is the same as Earth.

You complete me.Someone seriously needs to edit out that shitty index and paste to the TV Tropes page; it confused the n00bs.
Your army sucks. There are 5th gen articles, the list on the front page just doesn't go past 4th gen. And yeah, you can take stuff from any Pokemon continuity (games, manga, anime), take real-world inspirations, or just make stuff up. As long as the final product is to standards it doesn't matter how you got there.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!
adopting kitteh@Tracer: Don't worry, I always have a brick wall ready just for you ;) Bottom line on my attitude against the series's Creator Provincialism: The PokÚverse is obviously a big place, but it irks me that anytime we have to write about a city or culture we have to go "this is Japan but in a videogame. Not only do I find it utterly stupid and unnecessary (PokÚarth is not Earth) but also largely racist. Even more now that G5 throws in a blatant stand in for the US. ] PokÚdex, anime, manga, trading card game, heck perhaps even PokÚmon Pinball or Trozei where we can. The point is, no matter how much canon we take, we don't stop there. And yes, researching related animals, as well as mythological inspirations, helps a lot. For "inanimated" PokÚmon, I guess stuff can be mostly made up so long as it is senseful to a PokÚmon verse. Take a loot at the Bagon and Roggenrola article (perhaps the Lileep and Omanyte articles as well). The wiki index is the official one, but there are articles that are still pending to be "wikified" which is part of the issue, I think. It's Tangent's responsibility to edit the opening post accordingly.

[shulking intensifies]@ Tangent 128: Will do. EDIT: Like Silent said, any canon goes, as do any biological or mythological counterparts. Most people seem to use the games as their main basis, though, since they're what started it all.

I think it's more "The Poke-world should be like Japan because the the game/anime is from Japan" is the racist idea.

nonarySpadeI think the trainer card article needs to be expanded a bit.
The RazruchityelHow? Up until the fifth gen every main series game was explicitly based on a region of Japan. Some of the towns even had real world equivalents. It's not exactly an unfair assumption to make that their culture would be similar to Japan. They even have ninjas and Japanese style buildings in Johto. Has anybody claimed the Larvesta or Elgyem line yet? I'd like to do one of those.

adopting kittehFor one, the games only, and for two, the problem is when it's too blatant. We don't need it in a worldview Project. I don't get where the "explicitly" is coming from — the basic similarities are because of provincialism and localization only, dunno about the map issue (there's no volcano island right besides Tokyo, isn't there?). And it is only limited to the game medium, as eg.: the Movies have cities in all the regions based on diverse worlwdide cultural landmarks and also offer a better cultural mixup. Movie 10 comes to mind.

Has anybody claimed the Larvesta or Elgyem line yet? I'd like to do one of those. Both have been done already, unfortunately. Check out the big link at the top of the front page to see which ones have been or haven't been done.
You complete me.Dude. The Regions are Japanese of the ass. It'd be like claiming Eagleland being American is "racist" (protip: Race and Nationality aren't the same thing pick up a human geo book while you're at it). The many "real" cities (I.e. The ones that aren't just used as anime and film plot filler) all have geographic analogues in Japan or in the cases of Orre and Unova, the US. Using the Authorial intent to craft cultural backgrounds are far from racist and in fact, I find you quite sophomoric.
adopting kittehJustice Man, you've been using cuss words too expressively and dismissing others's attitude recently. I suggest you better fix your tone.
[shulking intensifies]@ Everybody: Can can we stop the arguing now? I hope I'm not the only one getting sick of it.
GeomancerYeah, it's getting a bit pointless, and way too flamey in here. And we do have a mod working with us on this project, just so you know.
You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!
The RazruchityelSilent Reverence: I'm not saying there can't be other nations in the Pokemon World that aren't Japanese influenced, Unova proves this. I'm just saying that this page makes it clear that the Japanese were clearly drawing inspiration from their country when they developed the pokemon world. Place like Orre and Oblivia are obviously elsewhere in the world but saying the majority of the main regions aren't based on Japan is incorrect. Also Mt. Silver is Mt. Fuji. Okay so I'm looking at that page linked to in the first post. Now the ones that are in black are the ones that haven't been written yet, correct? If so I'd like Joltik if no one has written it.
