Portal 2:

Jonah Falcon
Valve says Portal 2 is their BEST GAME EVAR.

BioWare said the same about Mass Effect 2, so I believe them.

The problem is, we're talking about Valve. So when they say "Best Game Ever." They mean "Best Game Ever up to 20 years from now when we release a game so good you'll need ID to buy it not because of the violence, but because it will be classified as a controlled substance. Or maybe 40 years, whenever."

More like: "Greatest game ever because we're taking too long to release the next Half-Life."
They said the same thing about Portal 1 so I doubt it.

But it will still probably be pretty good, I just hope the puzzles are more mindbending this time around.

Oh and if it has another stupid ending song that ruins the entire internet I will not play this game at all.

I'm not sure how they can top the original. The original is seen like...I dunno, the game of the internet. Unless it manages to have enough charm to produce at least 10 memes and a Brown Note song that can cure cancer, it's not going to live up to the "Portal name".

To be fair though, I don't think anything can live up to it. Expectations will be set amazingly high.

The fact that it's full length might actually be a problem. Portal was short and (bitter)sweet. It's like soda: You need the syrup, and you need the carbonated water, and you always want more. But unless you get more syrup, more water will give you more soda, but it won't be as good. Unlike soda, this is a syrup you can't have too much of.

Or:

They need to deliver several times more joy this time around. If they deliver the same amount of joy, it will feel like less, since it has to last through a full length game.

But the real question is: Will it make Yahtzee jam forks in his eyes?

Yes. Yes it will.

I hope it has a more developed story, when I played the first one I always thought that the only thing that could make the game better was a better storyline. And the ability to bleed physical effects through portals sound fun.

@Nifty : So wait.. the game will be good or not depending on Memes? And here I was hoping that the game would have a deeper, more varied gameplay (as in puzzles and portal gun's abilities)... it looks like they're delivering on that anyway, so no worries on my part. Jokes aside, it really does look like Portal is sometimes remembered for all the wrong reasons IMHO.. Gla Dos is fun but not THAT memorable for me, and the memes all over the internet kinda killed part of the enjoyment for me.

^^ I hope that by "better" you mean "longer", and nothing else. Because, honestly, that little story the first game... i freaking loved it. I honestly cannot see them making it "better". I CAN see them totally screwing it up trying to, though.

Why does everyone react so weirdly when someone mentions they would've liked a more developed plot, the do the puzzles and kill the computer but she's still alive plot felt to bare for men.

My opinion? Because it was just a good plot. It was simple, but they paid attention to the little details, the levels were built in a way to reinforce the plot, with the chambers behind the scene and all, the dialogue, well, monologue, actually, was nice as well, and gods knows you can count the number of games that actually have a original story on one freaking hand. It was well-written, a true rarity these days.

Well, that's my opinion, it could be wrong, but i'll stick by it until proven otherwise.

Son I am disappoint.
^ Don't you mean unique story?

I mean both. Well i'm not 100% sure it is a unique story, gods knows what you'll find these days, but at the very freaking least it was original. If people say it was unique, i'm not gonna bother arguing.

Rather, one implies the other, to a certain extent.

I never really understood everyone's ability to so harshly judge something based on too many people on the internet overquoting it. Then again, maybe I just don't pay as much attention to the many sphincters of the internet as some.

I hope the scenery is a bit more varied, Apple interior decorating gets boring.

^^ I don't think anyone harshly judged Portal though O_o'. At least not anyone I know/have read.

I think you people who're saying you don't think it'll be able to live up to the original are all highly underestimating valve.

@Zolnier: Did you see the previews yet? Hint: The scenery will definitely be more varied.

"Looking contemplative"
I hope this game sheds some insight into the aftermath of the Combine invasion (taking place 100 years after the first.) Something that's bugged me for a long time about Half Life is the fact that even if Gordon Freeman is able to utterly defeat the Combine forces on earth one way or another, humanity will still be left on a sterile hostile planet barely fit for resettlement. Even though they are cut off from the rest of the Universal Union, the Combine on Earth still (supposedly) have a stranglehold on most if not all of the remaining human cities and it will take decades, if not centuries to completely eradicate them.

Then again the original Portal was presented as an enclosed world that had little to do with anything occurring outside the enrichment centre, so it may have bugger all to do with the rest of humanity asides from Chell. That said, I would be surprised if Half Life didn't end with a completely ambiguous ending.

Half Life will never end. It will be like Zeno's paradox, with us waiting for shorter and shorter time periods between releases, but the periods will never reach zero, only approach it.

I've been disappointed by Valve before. Balancing the proven elements of Portal with the radical change that is full-game length is enough of a challenge that I'm not automatically assuming they'll get it right.

Portal 2 has been cancelled for E3, and replaced with a mystery game.

Maybe Half-Life 2: Episode 3?

Nah, that press release states pretty clearly that it's still going to be something about Portal 2.
Torment liveblog is still hiatusing. You can vandalize my contributor page if you want something to do.

Yeah. Half-Life has nothing in common with Portal.
