This is actually on purpose, as far as I can tell. There used to be no limit, and it made things look pretty sloppy.
I think it's also supposed to be a reminder that if you're that far, you should seriously consider just revising and condensing some of the bullets.

It's not about the asterisks for bulleted lists. It's about in-text asterisks, such as blanking out a person's name. "Mr B*********".

It's about literal ****** turning out as ***, not the actual indentation bullets.
Workaround is to group them in threes, like this: [=***=][=***=] — but that's a bit messy.

Unless you're trying to bleep out profanity (in which case see Our Super Strict Language Policy), why not just use spoiler tags if you're trying to mask out information?

The page where the problem occured was Spell My Name With A Blank, where using asterisks is the whole point in various examples.
