It would probably even unify the fanbase. Because I doubt that there would be even one person who think of this as a good idea.
People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

You know what this reminds me of?
We have a challenge to SEGA. In Sonic 5, create a storyline in which Sonic gets lung cancer. Imagine the drama of a vulnerable Sonic still persisting on his worldly adventures despite his illness. We guarantee the gaming world would be shocked, stunned, and moved by the effort to make Sonic's character more meaningful.
