Well, it's not as descriptive as something like Dueling Hackers would be, but for what it's worth, I do like puns.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Thinking about it more, I think Dot Combat would be a great name for a supertrope or index about digital/cyberspace combat/conflict, from flame wars to Snow Crash to the current trope. If the title can get re-purposed this way, then I have no objections to people renaming the trope whatever they want.

But "Dot Com" itself is not an overarching term that establishes cyberspace and computer network activities in a nutshell. If it did, then Dot Combat would already accurately summarize what it's already supposed to be describing. However, it doesn't so I don't see how it could work as a name for a super trope.

Not to mention that this trope in its current form is covering several different varieties of computer-to-computer combat situations among its examples, ranging from two hackers furiously typing away at keyboards (GoldenEye), straight up Hollywood Hacking (Hackers), and fights between virtual 3D avatars in a computer system (Johnny Mnemonic).

Bumping this.

Sounds like a fair number of us are fine with Dueling Hackers. Do we want to move forward with that?

Yes, Dueling Hackers sounds way more badass.

Most people prefer Dueling Hackers. I'd say go ahead. I notice there are only 14 wicks to change over.

(On a side note — this trope seems to be less common: hackers are more often seen raiding a... static target for want of a better term.)

I figured it was military uprising through the internet... at least I got the pun...

Dueling Hackers seems like a good name, if it needs a page image we can use that scene from Leverage where Wesley Crusher hacker showdowns with Hardison. (That's where my mind went after reading the trope description.)

Who needs a signature, really?

Go on, deface one of my cyberchildren if you must, but it'll always be Dot Combat to me.

Oh, it's a perfectly fine name... for another trope.

Read the thread, pick whichever one of the "I Thought That Meant"s was the most common, and reestablish. :)

I've attached a rename crowner as a decent number of people supported a rename.

How about Cyber Duel?

Hacker is a word whose meaning is in flux: there's the original — computer expert who likes to play around; the mainstream — person who breaks into computer systems; and the emerging — independent programmer who works on public or indie projects (like Firefox or Linux or phone apps).

If we go strictly with the mainstream def'n, then the only suggestion that really works is Magruda's Hack Counterhack. All the variants on Dueling Hackers have to hearken back to the original def'n a bit. (Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, speaking as a member of the first and third classes.)

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

Cyber Duel makes me think of a duel with robots and laser swords, but my mind is a funny place.

Agreeing with Hack Counterhack as a potential rename... I don't even know why I did this, there's not much that I can since my last post in this thread except the "yay, I remembered to vote!" notice... tongue

All right. This is +14 with no dissent. If there aren't any no votes by the time I get back from Tae Kwan Do I'm going to call this.

Even with no dissent ~8 hours is a bit too fast. I normally like crowners to be up for at least a week, but even a day would be better.

Ah, whoops. Didn't realise this one was that fresh. Too many crowners today. I'll leave it up for a few days then. I need to check the dates better.

Given the unanimous support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add names as you wish and feel free to tell me if I missed any.
