I thought that was pretty weak, too. Some funny moments but it goes out and contradicts stuff from previous episodes (in fact, they showed such an episode the same week! Namely, Hank Aaron Jr. drinking Wade Boggs’ head juice with no ill/time-dilating effects). Yeah, yeah, I know, Rule of Funny.
But I did like the episodes that bookended it. “Möbius Dick” has arguably been the strongest episode this season, with a compelling plot and credible characterization. “Yo Leela Leela!” was probably the funniest (You can see the plot twist coming from parsecs away, but the payoff to the episode is so good and the writing is so funny—save the annoying and cheap Lady Gaga joke, groan—I’m willing to forgive it).
I nearly died when I saw the Electric Light Orchestra spaceship!
Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883!Mmmmmmm, Wade Boggs. Goes down smooth.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyI thought Yo Leela Leela was pretty decent. Nothing earth shattering, but good.
I think the only real stinker of the season has been the Neutopia gender swap episode, and the contemporary celebrity references are grating, but in general it's been a pretty solid, enjoyable season.
Emperor Wu liked cake, but not exploding cake! What I wanna know is, how does Fry know about Lady Gaga? He went to the future in 1999, long before she became famous and popular. I guess he might have met her head at some point but it's still kinda weird and jarring.
And, 'Neutopia' was full of wasted potential. I agree, it's the weakest of the season so far.
"Religion isn't the cause of wars, it's the excuse." —Mycroft NextYeah...that's been one complant of mine on what is otherwise a great show. Somehow, the show likes to keep reminding us that we live in the year 2011 with the Lady Gaga and Fox News references. We get it, it's 2011 where we are, show me something about 3011 instead. Granted, this is hardly a problem of the new seasons, this has been going on since the beginning, when the references would remind us that we lived in 1999. Still, I'm over it, this season IMO has had more quality episodes then the previous one (with the exception of the aforementioned Neutopia) so I guess it isn't that bad.
Pop culture references have been a quirk of the show from day one. Sure, it'd be nice to get more about the 31st century, but if you didn't like it then, why complain about it now?
Fresh-eyed movie blogFrom what I recall, the first run's pop culture references weren't just about 99, they stretched from the mid 80s onwards.
Take Noticeably F.A.T., for one.
The sad, REAL American dichotomyPlus, it would make sense for Fry to reference the time he came from, it was only odd if it was one of the other characters. Exception being Leela's "That Wangs my Chung!", it strangely works.
Emperor Wu liked cake, but not exploding cake! So, how was it this week? I think this week's was one of the most solid of the season. One of the best jokes was in the background, if I'm correct that the one guy's... whatever the Scots call the crotchbag... is supposed to be a flash drive, because 31st century.
Fresh-eyed movie blogCan anyone explain the joke about Leela having 205 bones? I mean... I know that's a joke but I don't know why it's funny.
"Religion isn't the cause of wars, it's the excuse." —Mycroft NextLeela as a cyclops probably has less of those tiny bones in her skull.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.Oh, that's it? Huh.
"Religion isn't the cause of wars, it's the excuse." —Mycroft NextI was Scaroused.
" Magic is a method of talking to the universe in words that it cannot ignore."Alright, so now we know the status of Fry and Leela's relationship, and I'm even more confused.
Also, in a normal human body, it's 206, give or take a few. That might have been the joke. Or that she even knows how many.
I liked that episode.

The sad, REAL American dichotomyI think Fry and Leela's relationship was supposed to be a joke. She's making a point to try to flirt with the hunky Scot, and Fry's visibly hurt.
Fresh-eyed movie blogOkay, well there's a whole lot of character development gone. Magically. Despite, you know, entire episodes on the subject last season.
Clearly an alternate reality.
deviantArt | TwitterShe's tossing it aside so she can flirt with a dude.
Fresh-eyed movie blogThis show has gone out of its way to make it clear no character is the sole voice of reason. Everyone has their crazy moments now.
On the bones thing, who says having one eye is Leela's only mutation? In fact, they've joked several times that she has others, like her "elbow talons" that she files off.
Anyway, I loved the Bonus Vampirus. Thought it was a cute and funny episode all around, except for that fact that Leela was one of the ones who wanted to kill it early on, going completely against her reaction to so many other hostile alien creatures throughout the series.
bogleech.com for my writing, comics and cartoons. She only sees cuteness where there isn't when it's small enough to step on and sucking all her blood.
Fresh-eyed movie blogIt was small enough to step on when it hatched. In fact, she tried to step on it.
'Like stomping on a puppy.'
Anyway, minor Chracter Derailment aside, I liked this episode.
The Bone Vampire was a fun creature and the alien Scots were funnier than they should have been.
I must say.
That had to be one of the best episodes this season.

My DVR cut out at the worst time. What did Zoidberg promise Mom?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. If I remember correctly, his only possession, a coupon to a tanning parlor or something.

I saw a lunar lander and Apollo 100. I also recall what appeared to be the ship from Lost In Space and some other homage I don't remember. I was looking for Voyager and couldn't find it.
