Quickie Questions:

This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

Absolutely no relation to NLK
I ask because of the whole wannabe-shitstorm about Frozen whitewashing the Sami people (as the very white Kristoff was one of them), which was met with pictures of modern-day Sami, who for the most part seem to be whiter than sliced bread, and it got me wondering.

Happy Oktoberfest!
Ah I thought so.

Salami are not Eskimo (technically correct term, "Inuit" refers only to the Inupiat of northern Alaska). Modern Sami are European and so a given value of white, although they may of looked more Eurasian at some point in the past. I don't know, I'm basing this of my Peoples Of The Arctic middle school project. So take it with salt.

Does anyone know what is meant by the bolded-out part of the second bullet of this entry from the real-life section of War Is Glorious? I don't quite get the metaphor being used here.

  • This was one of the key tenets of the Futurist Movement of the early 20th century. World War One cured most of them of that notion.
    • For a good number of them, it cured them of the notion in much the same way that a guillotine cures a sinus infection.

I'm pretty sure the idea is that most people stopped believing in the futurist movement because they died.

... Now I feel like an idiot for not getting it on my own. Thanks for the answer, anyways.

Please, someone. How do you start a thread? I've been trying to find out for months, and I still don't know how.

When I first came onto this wiki, I read a page about subverted/inverted/exaggerated/etc tropes.

It demonstrated it with a car running through a sheet of glass.

I haven't been able to find it since; does anyone know where/what it is?

Another question.

When I was editing, I came across examples in the page that were preceded by "%%".

When I looked for them in the page, they didn't show up.

What are they and what do they do?

Those are ways to comment out examples. Some tropes fit, but they have zero context, meaning there's no way to understand how the trope fits.

However, other ones may be mod notices and such.

So some of the tropes I saw fit and could edit them to make them have examples.

I just don't know whether I should.

If there is a way to make the example have enough context to be understood, it's perfectly fine to fix it. By removing the % markup, it'll show up.

That sounded weird, so let me rephrase; If you know enough to put in proper context, and write the example without too much information(often natter) but very concise, go for it. [tup]

Do any premium television service providers (cable companies, etc.) push notifications to their DVRs when live television events like sporting matches and award shows inevitably overrun? Our homebrew DVR uses a third-party service for schedule information, and I've gotten into the habit of having it record an extra 75 minutes after the end of a live event or a show scheduled after it to make sure it doesn't get cut off. Last year I added an hour to my Super Bowl recording, which would have been enough if not for the power grid delay of game.

[up][up] You mean, aside from the super-fast projectiles creating a sonic boom whenever they are launched? Don't know, but here's a video of a prototypical railgun test, just before firing.
