So the dubbed film should be out by now. I'll try to pick it up later.

[up]It is. I started off watching the movie dubbed, but ended up switching to the original Japanese. The dub wasn't bad at all, the voices are actually pretty similar, it's just kind of weird to hear high school girls with such cutesy voices in English. Also too much conflict with the "not being able to speak English in England" plot.

Loves feel-good animation a whole lot.

Here's how they deal with the issue of the characters dealing with a foreign language: THEY DON'T. They just have the characters say everything in English, regardless if the line is supposed to be them talking in Japanese OR English! The only way you'd ever know they were trying to talk in another language would be how they react to each other, and how they deal with the language barrier in their behavior (Mio comments how Yui should correctly say a line in English even when she's already speaking it!).

Little Kuriboh fit perfectly in the role of the sushi shop owner. Honestly, you wouldn't really know it's him, and your reaction to the performance wouldn't be affected by it. Great casting.

Honestly, the whole "language barrier" thing kinda boned them from the start.

Also, I didn't know that was him.

http://konfan.blogspot.ca/2013/11/k-on-season-1-jp-blu-ray-box-coming.html

So now that Bandai is gone, what are the chances of this box-set coming to the west? Could Sentai grab a-hold of it any time soon? Or is Bandai's license still going?

What interests me is a way to legally own the Ura-On! segments. There's some interesting seiyuu interviews too.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the dub. Up till that point, I saw a dub of one of the Season 2 episodes (the one where Azusa kept having dreams), and I thought it was pretty meh. Azusa especially was completely off.

Then I watched the movie. My view took a total 180. Everyone fit so well, and I'm the sort who can pick out (or at least recognise) those little nuances that make a character's voice unique, more so for anime that uses human voices more often than Western animation does.

My only, and only beef with the movie dub was that they now switched the old Azusa's voice to Jun. Michelle Ann Dunphy's a good voice actor, but her voice is simply a bit too distinct to fit many characters well, IMO. But I guess I'm just nitpicking since I'm a Jun fan through and through and I find her Japanese voice strangely attractive. tongue

Azusa especially I thought was spot-on, kudos to her new VA. I was also surprised by the rest, who I assume to be the same V As from the series dub. They've really adapted their voices to the characters by this point. Yui has that Yui-ness, Mio was good, and Mugi, though breaking the otherwise accurate voice's illusion at one point, was still solid. Ritsu was quite a different take, but given the language and cultural differences I think her English voice sold it very well, focusing less on the high-pitch voice Japanese Ritsu normally uses when making jokes to portraying her as more tomboyish.

At first, I'd been given the dub by mistake and had a bad feeling about it. Now, I don't mind rewatching it again and again, and I don't even feel that inclined to watch the original dub, because I think this one is just as good, voice-wise. The only reason I would is to hear Jun's voice, and I have a whole anime series for that. tongue

EDIT: If there's anyone I could say Michelle Ann Dunphy's voice would fit well, it's be maybe Sucy, and perfect with that one bit character in Sword Art Online, the information broker that appeared for all of 20 seconds. I think her(?) name was Argo in the novels.

[up] I'm not sure, really. What I know is when I first saw the anime dub partway through, Azusa was voiced by Michelle Ann Dunphy. When I saw the movie, she voices Jun instead. I think we're talking about the same thing, since I distinctly remember Stephanie Sheh voicing Yui in both movie and anime.

[up] Yes! Mine was Animax. Didn't think that sort of thing exists, to be honest.

Also, [up][up][up][up] yes, Christine Marie Carbos' voice was the one I was impressed with. Matches Azusa perfectly.

I finished season 2, but I've heard of some OV As and a movie that go along with the series. Some of them are mid-quels, and some were made for Season 1 and 2 individually. I have to find an episode list.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).
