Yes, Samsara is awesome. Kind of a shame that you can't kill the Spectres in Strife, though. Seriously, tried every weapon as Duke, both not using and using the Sigil item, and couldn't lay a finger on it. Buuuuuggyyyyyy.

Second is...? :P

Great article. Hit the nail on the head, I think.

TL;DR Ultraviolence doesn't make doom, Level Design made doom

Although the article does take its time to bash on Brutal Doom.

Not to mention the various upcoming reboots. Never mind that they might, like Brutal Doom, be (gasp) fun.

The impression I got wasn't that Brutal Doom wasn't, or couldn't be, fun; it was more that Brutal Doom and the similar ultra-violent interpretations of the series missed the point of Doom. That Doom was always violent and grim, yes, but it was also more about combat as a puzzle rather than an orgy of weaponry and blood.

It changes the game's focus a bit, sure, but I tend to disagree with any attempt to try and say that the "point" of the game was this or that or whatever, as if there's some kind of intangible "essence of Doom-ness" that is dependent on the game having a certain focus...

I like the article. It's right when it says the reason DOOM has stood the test of time isn't because it was the proto-dudebro title, but because it was an intelligently made action title. In some odd case of Misaimed Fandom, even the creators ultimately didn't grasp this properly and eventually made a vastly inferior successor.

Not to mention the mod community which has still yet to simmer down and/or die. Its amazing.

I'm surprised that even now people find new ways to keep this 20 year old game alive.

Bump because I've recently got into these games. Finished the first episode of Doom 1 and am currently 4 maps into The Shores of Hell, freaking loving this game so far, even if I do tend to get lost and end up taking 15+ minutes to finish a level. Also, Kitchen Ace is hype as hell.

There's also this rather good video on what makes Doom so special to this day:

Worth watching, even if his points have been gone over dozens of times. It did help me get interested in checking out the series though (seriously, a game where you kill Demons set to a Heavy Metal inspired soundtrack, how did this not get on my radar until recently?)

I don't get why people try to turn it into this suspenseful, scary horror game. Its not meant to be that, its a balls to the wall action fest.

Also Doom 3 BFG Edition's nice. I got it on steam. And yes, people have extracted the new Doom 2 wad "No Rest For The Living"

I wouldn't say it's without it's suspenseful moments though, any part where you're navigating through a dark room is certainly meant to be suspenseful, and any level where the music gets slow and ominous can get pretty creepy. I agree that the game is generally more action-focused though.

20th Anniversary today!
Generally most of the originals scares were in the form of: Oh shit I just triggered something that I don't have the ammo for, abort abort!

C'mon Doom 3 isn't THAT bad. I heard Doom 3 BFG Edition was retooled a bit to be more actiony.

I enjoyed Doom 3.

I think it wouldn't have been as controversial if they hadn't attached it to the Doom franchise.

I'm enjoying it so far on PS3, mostly the first campaign so far (I played a bit of BFG's version of Doom 1 as well, feels good on a PS3 controller actually)

Count me excited for the new one. Been waiting 10 years for this. Will probably be 11 because I'll bet it gets delayed to 2015. Still, I'm glad that I'll finally get to see the newest installment of the game I grew up on.

If you preordered WTNO you got a beta key. They haven't announced when it'll be up though.
