Honestly, the Stargate franchise really ought not try to be Darker and Edgier. Stargate Atlantis already explored the "we can't get home" plot device and went about as dark/edgy as the universe allows.
This felt like they were shoehorning third-string characters from Battlestar Galactica into Star Trek Voyager, with all the excessively stupid plot that suggests. The Baltar Expy played by Carlyle is clearly the worst of the ripoffs.
Also... why was Lou Diamond Phillips in there again? He did almost nothing and died before they even got to the ship, right? Is some Sufficiently Advanced Alien going to take his shape in the series proper?

Yeah, the leak was so stupid. Were there no bulkheads at all that could be closed to seal off that area? Shuttle bays are in extremities of sanely designed ships, not critical areas, so it should've been trivial to lock it off.
I forget, was there any mention of the Ancient gene required to operate Ancient tech?

No, this episode was pretty bad, too. They brought desert hats with them from the Milky Way? The soldier, who has been displayed not five minutes earlier in the episode to hate Rush's guts, obeyed his command to shoot someone in the back?

Apparently his character survived. Somehow. Yeah, I'm still confused on that sequence of events.
On the series as a whole, I'm still waiting to see how it goes. I think it has potential, but they need to adopt a little more traditional a Stargate feeling – namely the self-aware humour. There are some characters with quite a bit of potential too, as well as some who are just feeling like dead weight so far.

Lou Diamond Phillips showing up healthy on Earth confused the hell out of me. Was I simply not paying attention and it was someone else who got wasted in the battle? I was slightly distracted during the pilot episode. Furthermore, the medic drugging him further depleted his usefulness. He spent the remainder of the transfered consciousness unconscious? I see where they were going with the medic's character, but they're wasting their high-profile actor, an opportunity for unique plot development, and my time.

He's the biggest-name actor associated with the series, not counting Richard Dean Anderson (even so, Phillips was doing movies when Anderson was doing Mac Gyver).
It's just kinda odd that they would slate a movie star into the series, then relegate him to a minor role on Earth, when the action is galaxies away. Maybe they didn't have the money to put him in every episode, and wanted an excuse not to have him around. In that case: why bother?

Stunt Casting ? Later plans? Budget got cut at last minute? The opportunity to get Robert Carlyle was later than that to get Lou Diamond Phillips and Carlyle wasn't cheap?

I must agree. The shot of the Destiny flying out of the sun was truly epic.

How the hell can the Destiny withstand flying into the sun? I mean what the hell?
A daedalus-class ship with Asgard-shields could withstand a solar flare for 4 seconds. Powered by a ZPM. And it still took heavy damage.
So how the frikkin hell can a 50000 trillion years old ship fly into the sun?
And if they're gonna tell me that the shield somehow 'absorbs' all the impossibly destructive heat, energy and radiation, I'm gonna rage equally hard. Because that would mean a truly undefeatable shield, if it can just absorb everything and convert it into energy for the ship.
I mean the episode was incredibly awesome, even with the techno babble it was cool, but this little bit... Come on!

"Newer is better" is a fallacy.
For some reason I don't think that Ancient tech is subject to the Newer Is Better fallacy, though. They built everything to last; if they could make ships that great at all, they would've built them all that way. Only explanation, if you ask me, is that the ship isn't actually ancient tech, but that of a race that came before, or perhaps ancients before some sort of cataclysm that threw them back a few million years. We already know it doesn't use the ancient gene requirement tech.

Again, they had the resources to build one, but for all we know the Destiny is equivalent to a hundred Atlantis-class city-ships in required tech. Or the line of research that went into it was eclipsed due to economic/political/cultural forces.
