You're asking why a group of people does something that they enjoy doing instead of blindly conforming to society's norms? Probably because they enjoy doing them more than they care about what other people think of them, and that's a good thing. Go geeks!
Marching band geeks can march and blast the ears off hecklers with distilled awesome.
I'd say for the same reason art students make the sorts of jokes we do and enjoy the hobbies we do, or why engineers enjopy the stuff they do. because those stereotypes exist because sometimes we just feel like indulging our hobbies and interests in unabashedly dorky ways for the hell of it.
We are geeks because we like geek stuff. If we did not like it, we would not be geeks.
You exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it.Uh, what? You're asking a redundant question here.
"Why do video gamers so enjoy playing video games?"
"Why do car lovers love cars?"
Geeks are, by (one) definition, people who enjoy doing geeky things.
So, the next logical step is to ask What Measure Is A Non-Geek?
I am suddently reminded of the Shakespeare parody Not So Different speech from The Spellcasting Series.
In regards to the OP: generally most geeks know Lord of the Rings so they'll instantly get the reference to Bilbo's party. Widely recognized geeky subjects also tend to be stereotypical ones (ie, the ones non-geeks vaguely know about).
Thread Hop: Geeks do geeky things because they are fun. Said geeky things just happen to be a little more niche.
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars. Also, most of the stereotypes about what geeks do... well, "surprisingly" they stem from the things the geeks like doing. You don't stop doing what you like to do, simply because someone puts a label on it that says stereotype.
Scaramouch, scaramouch will you do the fandango?"Why do video gamers so enjoy playing video games?"
"Why do car lovers love cars?"
Geeks are, by (one) definition, people who enjoy doing geeky things.
Hahaha. Yeah, it's like, a Shaped Like Itself thing.
I happen to be a massive marching band nerd, and I. LOVE. IT!

Never let it be said that I would not use twenty words when only a few words would be necessaryI'm excited for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but TV Tropes has one of the best anti-necro policies of all time! OF ALL TIME!
Oh, and I lied about the letting you finish part. Mods have been hollered.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Two odd thoughts about geeks I've noticed while on deployment:
Since I left high school 17 years ago, I have never been surrounded by as many Magic The Gathering players as I have now. And it's not your 'typically' geeky types who are playing, either, it's the mechanics!
Two weeks ago, I ended up in a discussion with my department's Commander about the 501st Legion. I'm not a member, nor am I planning to join, but the hydraulics guy who works nights has expounded at length on his plan to join and build his own costume once we're off deployment. CDR's parting comment at the end of the conversation was, "This is why people say that ATnote are geeks." The hyds guy wasn't even here for the conversation.
(edit) Whee! INB4 Mods! *awaits thumpings or nasty PM*

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswWell, Blue Ninja's post suggests there is still some discussion worth having. Please remember that necro is not an automatic lock reason. So not locking.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI agree with that notion I'm at job corps right now and magic the gathering is huge even among those who don't come across as geeks
Presenting! Why do birds sing so gay?
And lovers await the break of day?
Here is a question though. Would a geek be considered a geek if he did not enjoy doing geeky things...?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI'm at Job Corp too and I've encountered the same thing at he two centers I've lived on, it's so weird.
Probably has something to do with the lack of access to the outside world. Some non-geeks sort of just start developing entry-level geeky interests. I mean there are so many jar heads and stereotypically urban types that can talk forever about Naruto, Bleach, and Dragonball Z or play magic. They find the amount of depth regular geeks go into our interests to be ridiculous and uninteresting but for them the preliminary interest is there.

The Blog The Art
Sort of a chicken and egg scenario. Nerds like nerdy things because they're nerds. But they're nerds because they like nerdy things.
