Note that's what I've heard from people who played the Japanese version. Can't say if it's actually like that or not.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. One thing I've heard more than once is kind of iffy in P5 is the treatment of gay characters. One of the part-time jobs you can get is working at a gay bar, where your duties include listening to the patrons vent their issues with Japanese homophobia at you. From what I understand, while the issues are presented sympathetically, the characters themselves are still pretty stereotypical, including a comic-relief older couple that proposition you for a three-way or something to that effect.
A lot of people find this pretty inexplicable, considering the game is not just progressive but mega-ultra progressive (especially for Japan) on pretty much every other social issue.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."Huh yeah that sounds worrying especially that last part.
I really hope we don't get another hot springs scene. I could do without the women acting like bitches and getting away with it.
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."Why is Persona 5 anything being posted here?
That sounds more... Clueless than cruel.
Not ideal- Should've thought this through more, etc- But I'm not sure this is something to get up in arms over yet, especially not if localization saves all that.
Anyway- Yeah, we should keep it to the P5 thread.

I sure said that!I think the two in question you are talking about are from the Beach events in Hawaii.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. Can we take everything 5 related to the other thread, please. I and others REALLY do not want to know.
jesus fucking christ really
first kanji and now this nonsense.
Kanji was never gay, he was a Metrosexual and that in many ways is more unacceptable in Japan than being gay.
And that's the problem.
Going to stop overreacting but I'm really not happy that this is how they're going to continue to handle this in the future. Even if the dub changes it, I know that that's what the writers and the people who wrote off on that particular sequence think.
So I won't be getting 5 any time soon.
So can we finally stop talking about it now?
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeKanji was likely bisexual with more interest in girls over boys. That's the only thing I'll say on the issue.
And honestly these aren't even spoilers. Just random stuff from the game but we're still spoiling it for you. Honestly freaking out about things that arent even spoilers is kinda rude.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Memers was the one talking about spoilers, not Hashil.
Why is that a problem?
His fear of being seen as homosexual is the focus of his whole episode, but there's nothing to really suggest if he is or not.
That doesn't stop an entire sequence of homophobic dungeon crawling topped off by a boss who hits on Yu and Yosuke happening. And than his crush turns out to be a girl, so y'know. We don't have to deal with any icky gay implications.
It's really crude and ungraceful and emblematic of the new Persona team's views on the subject.
The fact that the Shadow is a ridiculous stereotype is the point, as Kanji is afraid that that's what he comes off as, even though he doesn't.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."By itself his shadow is fine.
But using context, from real life and the games this new team has produced, it just paints a really bad picture of them.
Persona games of late are about as subtle as a New Years party, and when they want to tackle an issue they do it in a way even a grade schooler would get. When they want to use something as a backdrop or for humor's sake, they're a little less enthusiastic.
Kanji's fear of being seen as effeminate actually is a theme they follow through on, and they do it about as well as they do anything thematically in this game.
The entire homosexual backdrop of his dungeon and boss fight are just that, though: a gag for the audience to laugh at and than forget, except for when Yosuke brings it up, again, mostly for something to laugh at concerning Kanji, who's more or less comic relief after his dungeon's over with.
And that's all that particular subject is to this team. A joke. Or something for fujoshi to enjoy at best.

I'm probably going to regret getting involved in this type of topic, BUT: I thought the point of Kanji's character arc was to accept who he is, regardless of what other people think. Granted, his crush on Naoto kind muddles the issue but that's what I took it as initially.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. That's unfortunately in line with the treatment of LGBT issues by just about everyone I can think of in pop japanese media. Not to excuse Atlus' sloppy handling of the issue, but I think you're only really going to find respectful or nuanced portrayals of LGBT characters in niche manga the majority of the time because that's about the only place LGBT creators can get a chance to have a voice.
When it comes to Persona 4, you got to remember it released in 2008.
We still have problems when it comes to LGBTQ representation in games today, imagine 10 years ago.
That's not to say you can't criticize the way the game handles those issues, but things changed a lot in the last decade or so.
Taro Yoko's the kind of guy you want for nuanced gay characters without it coming off as blatant or in your face as a joke. The same guy who says he just wants to make cute girls in french maid outfits because he likes girls. That also happen to be androids.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. What's interesting and distressing is that in Japan at least there seems to have been a regression since the '90s, when you had sympathetic, non-stereotypical gay characters in mainstream stuff like Evangelion and Sailor Moon.
The pig of Hufflepuff pulsed like a large bullfrog. Dumbledore smiled at it, and placed his hand on its head: "You are Hagrid now."I can't imagine something like Yuri On Ice being made back then. Hell, it's probably a miracle it was made now.
Skipping over whatever the hell that conversation was about, because seriously guys what don't you understand about "keep P5-related stuff to its own goddamn thread"...
Fast forward 9 years later and a lot of us are older, likely adults with bigger problems than the ones we initially thought were big as teenagers. So looking back with our current mindset, yea it's easy to see the Persona 4's casts problems as "first world problems" that aren't a big deal.
Well that's better. Guess I shouldn't complain too much about things I don't know enough about.
Supe excited for 5 tho.
