Is it just me, or is this show just just a series of down notes? XD
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.The stuff with the parents has major build-up in the later episodes. Keep watching.
And it is a series of down notes mainly because that's life. The realism is why it is one of the best teen series ever made.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/Am I the only one who ever saw MAJOR Rayanne/Angela Les Yay? I mean, it was sooo apparent to me, but the internet/my friends don't seem to agree. By which I mean, neither the internet, nor my friends. Not like the internet = my friends. Anyway. I mean in the first episode drunkface Rayanne tells Angela "you're so beautiful, it hurts to look at you." Which is of course, what Angela told Rickie she'd want someone to say right before having sex. They even have an unusually good potential ship name (Rayangela!) and yet nobody seems to see it but me.
I mean, I'm kind of easy to dismiss because I have years of experience interpreting homosexual subtext where there is literally none, but...isn't Rayanne OBVIOUSLY in love with Angela?
That would possibly be the best thing ever. Rayanne was my favorite character.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/I adore Rayanne. One of the things I liked best about the show was the way it dealt with Rayanne's alcoholism. Actually, just the fact that they dealt with it at all, since teenage alcoholic behavior is usually not even regarded as such by the other characters, or even by the writers, rather dismissing it as kids being kids.
I think Rayanne is my favorite character too, although sometimes it's Rickie, and occasionally even Angela.
I can see that
Humour, where would we be without it? In Germany, probablySeriously. It kind of makes me want to go through every episode and make a compilation video of all the Les Yay. Like, do you remember the scene where Rayanne's mom Amber first met Patty Chase in Guns and Gossip?
Patty: Hey, you know, I really liked what you said in there.
Amber[laughing]: Oh God.
Patty: I wish I could be that—
Amber: What? Loud? Obnoxious?
Patty[laughing]: Forceful. I'm Patty Chase.
Amber: Hi.
Patty: Angela's mom?
Amber: Ah, wow. Angela. Oh, Rayanne talks about her all the time. She's in love with her. She wants to be Angela.
Patty: Really. Gosh they—they seem so different.
Amber: Oh, you know kids. They find one person and they just can't get enough of them. Like being in love only they re not allowed to have sex.
Patty[laughing]: Right.
[Amber sits on a wall and lights a cigarette]
Amber: No, don't you remember there would be like this one person who had like perfect hair, or perfect breasts, or they were just so funny, and—and you just wanted to eat them up. Just—just live in their bed. Just be them. Like everybody else was in black and white and that person was in color. Well, Rayanne thinks Angela is in color. Major color.
Seriously? I am pretty sure that is exactly how I described my obssessions with girls before I admitted they were crushes.

You're going to hate me for saying this, but I found Rayanne a bit annoying.
Not all the time, and I do find her funny and adorable in her antics. but sometimes, the backhanded snark and non sequitors to everyone outside of the Angela/ Rickie/ Rayanne social circle made me think about the one person in your group of friends you want to wrap in duct tape sometimes XD.
I actually somewhat like Danielle just because she's one of those "GODDAMN IT MAKE ME THE MAIN CHARACTER" characters. I especially liked when she asked if she could stay up and watch horror movies/ porn? sometime in the earlier episodes.
So-Called Angels was really touching too.
I'm still on episode 14 or 15, btw.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Yes on all counts with regard to Angela's sister. She is hilarious. Have you seen her in the Halloween episode yet? (wait, duh...Halloween episodes come before Christmas episodes.) Pure win. I am curious how she manaaged to acquire that wig without alerting either parent as to what her costume was going to be.
The So-Called Angels episode is one of my favorites, and I agree it is really touching. I wish it wasn't so cheesy, with the giant fake wings and whatnot. I think it would have worked better if the audience realizes the homeless girl is an angel at the same time as Patty, although I suppose in context, she might be misinterpreted as a ghost...except for all the religious overtones.
Oh and I don't hate you for that particular opinion. I do happen to adore Rayanne for all the reasons you find her annoying, though.

The "How did you die?" line served as a What What Whoa to me. Mostly because I was trying to assess how she could have been wearing the boots as an... ah forget it. And well, I guess I liked the last frame. Nice little transition into fade to black, narmy as it may be.
Also, throughout the show, Brian is an ass. A poor, misguided soul, but an ass. Had the series gone on longer, I would have liked to see how his character developed, and how far he might have on with Angela, if at all possible.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Brian and Jordan are pretty consistently jerkasses. Were they even meant to be sympathetic? I mean, jeez. It's a little ridiculous.
Then again, I loved the jerkass English teacher who first noticed that Jordan was reading at a first grade level.
Jordan is basically Trent with little to no redeeming features whatsoever. A definite sign Angela could do so much better.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.He was better than Brian though. Brian was a jealous creeper.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/True. Brian is every bad side of a Tsundere with little to no will of his own.
I think I found a good entry for Unfortunate Implications in the show, regarding Jordan and Brian.

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Watched "Betrayal".
Somehow, I just love how Angela Completely Misses The Point whenever Rickie gave her advice XD
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Watched "Weekend".

ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.I actually liked Brian personally more than Jordan, I'm not sure why I though him being a bit of a Jerkass was part of his charm for me
Humour, where would we be without it? In Germany, probablyI didn't like Jordan or Brian. But I suppose the only reason why I'd sympathize with Brian is because he narrated once.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.Saw the final episode.
A slap on the face cliffhanger if I ever saw one. If only this show had lasted longer.
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.What a great show this was. At the time (Fall '94) it took on subjects other shows shied away from.
Someone said it was a downer. And someone else said life is a downer.
This show coincided with my discovery of the internet. It was the first time I discussed a TV show on a mailing list, and made online friends who sent me mix tapes and other MSCL stuff. It was also the first time I took part in an online campaign to save a TV show.
Oh well, guess we will never find out if Brian ever got together with Angela.
From there to here From here to there Funny things Are everywhere!
Been watching this show for a while. Pretty good so far. I love a lot of the transitions and background humor.
Wish they wouldn't spend so much time with the parents, though. Them and all the frank talk of sex. Isn't it odd how they're more neurotic and angsty at times than the teenage characters themselves?
I'm on the 3rd episode.
