Bakuman:

Doesn't really prevent them from putting in an Expy.

Also, Fukuda is kind of what I imagine Kubo to be like.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."
^ Fukuda?

Fukuda.
"Canada Day is over, and now begins the endless dark of the Canada Night."
^ Yeah, I know who he is, he just doesn't really strike me as Kubo-ish.

I use to be Marvellad.
Interesting thing: apparently, there is an actual Shonen Jump editor named Hattori. If that's the case, I wonder if any other editors are expy'd in the series.
I try.

Actually most of the editors are expies of real life editors.

No wonder Hattori's awesome. The real him is the editor of One Piece.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!

If I recall correctly, there was actually a group of comparison shots of the Bakuman editors and their real life counterparts at some point. Ninja'd.

I think Miura is an OC, though.

Maybe or maybe not, I first saw that pic way before Miura ever appeared in the manga. So its quite possible he's an expy of an editor that the authors don't particularly like.

I think that would be considered rude and unprofessional.

Well its not like they haven't done Take Thats before. Besides, I'm pretty sure they didn't make it TOO obvious in case someone did catch on.

Of course, this is all pure speculation.

The editor in chief looks a hell of a lot cooler in Bakuman...
Sometimes the question is not, "Am I being misanthropic?" but rather, "Am I being misanthropic enough?"

No, he's a French-Japanese editor of Japan's most popular manga that looks like a rock star.

Looking at something else entirely, take a look at this page from Akumetsu. Thanks to that comparison picture, I now know about this Shout-Out as well. grin

He looks like rock star Jesus.

Seriously.

I know why the authors didn't model manga!Hattori after Jesus!Hattori. He would take away too much attention from the main characters.

New chapter.

By the way, wasn't Iwase talented, you know, something like 20 chapters ago? Now the authors seem like they're trying as hard as possible to make it look like the success of her manga depended on Hattori and Niizuma...

^^ What did you expect? It's Bakuman.

I read it and was suddenly struck by the notion: "Good lord please don't tell me that they believe that they're trying to portray a strong woman and that this is what a strong woman is like."

Otherwise, fairly enjoyable chapter. Like how they're ratcheting up the conflict. Bakuman's really good in that department.

^ I know but still... I can accept Iwase as a bitch, but I want her to be a talented one. The whole 'GIVE ME AN IDEA!' makes her look.. well...

By the way, wasn't Iwase talented, you know, something like 20 chapters ago?

She was supposed to be a talented novelist. She wasn't even interested in manga before she decided to show up Takagi by beating him with manga. It's a medium she's extremely inexperienced in, so she's been getting by on her skill at storytelling and relying on others to translate it effectively to manga.

I'd like to think that the whole "give me an idea" thing is because she's not used to writing for a manga audience and was getting help with story ideas with the right demographic appeal, which isn't too far from the help Ashirogi's been getting, but I can't really be sure where the author's going with this.

But isn't the novelist supposed to be the one coming up with the ideas? She can leave the translating her story to manga form part to Niizuma and her editor, but coming up with story ideas is, you know, kinda her job. And kinda what she's famed for.

Though of course, she's more experienced in writing literary novels, so I guess she just ran out of ideas when it came to a more shonen manga form? Which is sad, since Hattori obviously thought she was a talented writer and her manga ideas were awesometastic.

Does this count as Character Derailment, perhaps? Or the Worf Effect for creators?
