Instead of killing Tyrese or Beth, just kill darryl or rick instead. C'mon, Kirkman, I dare you.

I think Daryl's going to be dead. It seems most of the original characters have expiration dates.

[up]x2 I'd rather they went with Carl.

But yeah. Another victim of the black guy quota. Sigh.

[up][up] No way. At least not anytime soon. There would be so much backlash and a loss in viewership if they killed Daryl. I feel like Daryl's death will take place during a finale if they have the balls to do it at all.

Man, even the zombies can't give a fuck...

And Maggie's casual reaction to the zombie intruder, in the episode intro, made me snicker.

Aaand... Title Drop.

A lot more subtle than the comic delivery.

[edit] Forgot that Rick had already done it back after losing the farm.

No, this is the first title drop. Rick's big line after the farm fell was "This isn't a democracy anymore."

Guess I need the season boxed sets more than paying bills, because I only have vague recollections of earlier stuff.

Of course, the benefit of DVD is that I can skip the soap opera drama of the first half of the 2nd season. tongue

So

I'm really hoping they change some things around with this arc instead of doing a mostly direct port from the comics cause Rick coming across another group that leads to the death of their leader and a good chunk of their people while not so old in the comics would be a rather old thing in the show by now. Though I also hope they don't change it around by making this group secretly evil cause having a good group for once was nice.

Maybe it's just me, but I start to lose sympathy for Rick's group. Hell, I lose interest in this series as a whole.

Every hope-spot turns out to be a trap, lost to the zombies or just doesn't last long enough to be an actual home. The nice people they meet are either ax-crazy, cannibals or want the group dead. It's depressing and I am not sure if I even want to continue watching it as this point. Obviously the next big sanctuary they reach will just be another deathtrap or lead by some psycho and lost, again.

You're not unjustified in thinking that way, Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy is a thing, and it does feel like the show's running out of things to do.

It's also loosely following the tracks of a popular comic book series, so as long as the comic stays in good graces and has story left to tell and the show doesn't cut too closely, I'll still enjoy it. A lot of shows can be pieced together as a series of trials and errors, with predictable outcomes, failings, and small victories. I don't really let that bother me, otherwise I'd never enjoy anything. You boil everything down to "characters will live/die this week" and everything follows a pattern.

Coincidentally, one of the most criticized parts of TWD is the farm saga, where their sanctuary wasn't run by a completely crazed dictator. You can't really stay in a "happy" place on a show like this for long. Civilization's broken down, so unless you introduce aliens or cloning, the group can and probably will be forced to move again and again. It's a show set in a post-apocalyptic world, so odds are a lot of the show will be about death, pain, and miseries.

Killing Tyreese and Beth so close together, though, probably desensitizes a lot of the fanbase. I think the episode before last even emphasizes that with its slow pace and overall 'ho-humness'.

I'd really like to see them enter a new phase where they actually build and 'keep a community and start to rebuild, locally at least, civilization.

This community might be it (from what I saw, I missed the first 10 minutes), the two guys looking for them seem legit. It doesn't seem like they'll be running into Negan.

Negan seems like a milestone moment like he was in the 100 issue of the comic. Hed be a great way to close out the season till October.

And I have a hard time criticizing this show, but yeah, I'd like for it to advance again.

The problem with even a legit and workable long-term sanctuary is, the Walkers go where the food is, and they herd like nobody's business. Ditto for the snickering greedy idiots who, let's face it, must make up the majority of mobile survivors.

Unless the herds just suddenly start seriously rotting in a measurable timeframe, there really is no hope. Anywhere people are or could have ended up (the flash flood zone buried walker near the prison) the Walkers will be, and in numbers that never stop increasing. What they don't do, the greedy living will. If Rick & Co. found an amazing weapons cache on a perfect, easily defended hill, the greedy would be on it like those cartoon mice in the old one where Daffy sells Yosemite Sam and his double a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. To use a more modern analogy, like Splicers on an undefended scout troop of Little Sisters.

They've been through a winter and a summer, and that hasn't slowed the Walkers down (maybe, maybe fused some of them into the ground/mud).

They're surprisingly resilient. I think TWD humans are thoroughly screwed on that plan, waiting the Walkers out. The just don't decay fast enough.

Given sufficient organization and numbers Walkers aren't a serious threat. The prison only had problems with them because Psycho Girl was deliberately luring them. Woodbury handled them pretty well and Terminus didn't seem to have a major problem with them.

Assorted thoughts recorded as I watch the 11pm encore, as I was at work during the 9pm showing.

(I got up to the fist mention [though not actual appearance on-screen, so to speak] of Negan in the comic, so I know Alexandria is an import, but that's about it. I'm only working with the compendiums, as I don't have the budget or storage space to buy the individual issues as they come out.)

Daryl: We brought dinner.

[lol]

Slammed gate: Yeah, that doesn't sound ominous at all...

Rick interview: Missed the first minute, anything important happen during it?

Buhbye epic beard.

Yeah, I needed to see Daryl gutting that possum. tongue

"I didn't know what was under there." [lol]

Rick's night walk: Looks like they're also importing the asshole that Rick beats up from the comic.

Carol's interview: Yeah, people-killing person too. tongue

Rick's stashed gun: So the Alexandria people or is there another player?

Rick/Carl in the woods: I guess the family that slays together stays together. [lol]

Supply "dry" run: New asshole to add to the roster, I guess. Also helped give the mayorette (I forget her name) Reasonable Authority Figure cred, I guess.

"Then we'll just take this place." Oookay...

Clean shaven Rick looks weird.

I feel like they're trying to say something's off about the town, but I'm not quite getting it.

What's off about the town is that they're soft. The world outside the walls is more dangerous than they seem to think (as implied by Aidan's irresponsible behavior with the Walker he wanted to chain up), and they are making the fatal mistake of thinking that walls and fences and careful organization are all you need to be safe. Rick already tried walls and fences and organized life at the prison, and all that preparation got literally shot to hell — all it took was a weakness on the inside (Psycho Girl feeding the walkers, meaning they wouldn't leave the prison alone) plus an overwhelming disruptive force from outside (the Governor, twice). The walls are strong, but the people on the inside — to turn a phrase — don't really know What Happened And What's Going On.

Rick's little comment at the end was to the effect that if he thought the Alexandria leadership was going to do something stupid and put everyone in danger, he'd be the first vote for an insurrection by people who actually know what they're doing.

I don't know if that's good or bad for this show.

On one hand, eeryone who's survived has either killed someone, trained in the use of a weapon, or lost their Morality Pet - it kind of limits the range of personalities that get introduced to the main cast.

On the other hand, everyone who survived is a Bad Ass, a Crazy Badass, organized, and armed.

Never knows best.
