did a quick ctrl+f for it, and couldn't find a thread.

So, any fans here on the forums? Gintama definately needs more love in my opinion. I mean, a series that includes beating up the demon lord in a dragon quest spoof with the village elder's body, an episode devoted to toilet paper (or lack thereof), and another episode all about who gets to eat the most beef at dinner definately needs more attention.

this thing still here?

how about the Character Popularity Arc?

that is all.

Gintama is my favorite currently airing anime hands down, and possibly my favorite Shounen series of all time. It manages to have amazing comedic timing while still managing to have genuinely gut-wrenching drama.

Whoever's directing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood should take a page out of Gintama's book, IMO.

I really hope that it gets dubbed, and that the dub takes an approach similar to that of Keroro Gunsou's.

Given Sentai's history, I doubt there'll be one, which is a damn shame, but I'll still be picking it up nonetheless to show my support. Needs More Love is a huge understatement for this fantastic series.

Gintama was the only anime in more than three years of watching that made me split my sides( the other was Mahoujin Guruguru and One Piece) laughing. It's funny, it's heartwarming, and just plain awesome at times. Always wondered why it doesn't get as much recognition as it does - possibly because it subverts all Moe and Action Hero stereotypes. Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura( my god, Kagura. The antithesis of what you would expect a shonen heroine to be) :D

Incidentally, was I the only one who felt that Madao's imaginary movie( Madao : Road of Gintama ) actually felt kind of heartwarming :)

Thought I'd necro this Gintama thread since the anime started coming out with new episodes again. Seems like Gintama doesn't really get much love on the forums. But I like it nonetheless. The whole series feels like one hilarious filler, but once it gets down to the storyline, and things get serious it gets pretty darn awesome. The show takes a little getting used to, but I highly recommend it. I feel like I can really relate to Gintoki (the protagonist). A lazy waste of talent... all right well, I'm not talented, so lazy. I feel like I really connect with him on a lazy level. So if you like heroes lazy and lounging around like sacks of crap, check out Gintama. My shining endorsement for this series.

I really enjoy this series too. It has some of the most obscure gags and references that I've seen come out of Japan. More so than any given episode of Family Guy here in the States. No other show has given me more "OMG WTF! I cant believe that showed this on TV!" moments. At the very same time it has some very moving moments that did not shed a tear at. I seriously cant wait for the next movie to come out!

lol yea, I remember the earlier episodes, they referenced a ton of other anime. Either they gradually decreased the anime references towards the more current episodes or I just didn't recognize them. I didn't catch the movie though, from all their commercials for the movie, it seemed like a rehash of one of their story arcs. Any confirmation on that?

The references have gotten more subtle as the gags have gotten more outrageous. Most recently there was the time skip episode parodying the One Piece/DBZ/Naruto time skips.

Yea, the first movie is a rehash of the first major arc of the series. The second movie is going to be a prequel about Gintoki's time in the war. Looks bloody and fantastic.

oh wow, I can't wait for the second movie then. They've been hinting at his past since the series' inception. That's going to be so sweet. Ah last american volume? well, you can always google the Gintama fan subbed mangas.

Even if Viz's translations can sometimes be rather off.

Translating/localizing this series must be a nightmare. I never got into the manga. I think it would ruin many of the jokes in the anime to know the punchline ahead of time.

yea, normally I don't dip into the manga unless a series tends to drag (bleach and kaiji are the ones that apply for me), but I did dip into the manga for the Iron town arc for Gintama. Not many jokes when they get down to the action sequences so I think it's safe to read the manga for that. But ultimately it does take a little out of watching the anime, since you do know what's coming, but I don't know, the storyline episodes are so few and far in between that it is still pretty awesome to watch even after reading the manga.

Is the anime any good?

If you like crazy, random humor, the anime is excellent. In this weeks episode,I haven't laughed so hard all year. Even a buddy of mine who's only seen like the first 10 eps was laughing right along with me.

It can seem a little rapid fire at times, until you get used to it. And some of the references are obscure to say the least, they often reference 8 and 16-bit games that never came out here or were not that popular in the States.

I say watch the first couple of episodes, and just keep in mind that the crazy just keep escalating.

I've read the first six volumes and liked it, but not sure if the anime carries that.

The anime follows the manga pretty much verbatim. If you like the manga, you like the anime. However knowing some of the punchlines will ruin some of the episodes. I'd honestly suggest watching the anime from where you left off in the manga.

This does need more love. It's one of my top five anime, and it's hilarious. Some of my favorite scenes include the Neo Armstrong Jet Cyclone Armstrong Cannon episode, the Gokon episode (which is my favorite episode), Yamazaki sparking anpan at people, the Densha Otoko parody arc, Elizabeth shooting lasers from its eyes, "Ill Smith", "Dondake!", the episode where Hijikata and Matsudaira's daughter went on a date, Kagura's rap, Katsura's rap, the episode where Saachan got introduced (my second-favorite episode), and all of the refrences to O*e P*ece, my favorite anime. Last year, I even cosplayed as Gintoki for a con.

Apparently it gets enough love in Japan, what with it being one of the top best selling series and all.
