These two shows tell about a Teen Genius who is an Anti-Hero or Villain Protagonist getting a godly superpower and a secret identity while using it.

For me, I like Death Note more than Code Geass.

What about you?

I think Code Geass is a lot more fun, what with the Crazy Awesome and Humongous Mecha and all that, but I think overall Death Note is a better show. I like Light as a Magnificent Bastard more, and Geass doesn't have an antagonist as awesome as L.

Geass has Suzaku. D=

I think I'm gonna give it to Death Note here.

The difference is that Death Note is supernatural while Code Geass is science fiction.

I think I'm more interested in Death Note because of it's supernatural element.

Code Geass has much better characterization.

Geass has Suzaku. D=

That's one of the reasons I like Code Geass more!

I agree that Code Geass has better characterisation - it has more actually 3D characters as opposed to Death Note, of which only half a dozen really get any development. I also think it has a much better supporting cast, probably because the above reason.

And I think it's fun.

I actually don't hate Suzaku as much as everyone else seems to. He's not my favorite character, but I don't think he's horrible.

And yeah, I can agree with you on the characterization thing. Though I don't think there was anyone in Code Geass who was as awesome as L.

And he might be a mass murdering, genocidal dick, but I still like Light more than Lelouch.

Even if Lelouch is awesome.

L is kind of awesome, but Suzaku has far more complex characterisation. And he actually gets a character arc of his own. L does things, but they are more about pushing other's development, he hasn't got much internal development of his own (One reason I prefer to think the whole friends thing with Light wasn't a lie is that it gives him meaningful development)

I have fondness for Death Note, though, because it was the first time I really liked a full-on villainous character. I'm normally more a fan of the stereotypical hero type.

Suzaku does have more complex characterization than L, but I just like L more. I think it's because he's not the super heroic type. It would have been easy to take the route of making L a SUPER DETECTIVE ON THE SIDE OF JUSTICE, but instead, he almost operates on Blue-and-Orange Morality. He cares more about just solving the case than any sense of doing what's right.

I did like how Suzaku was kind of a Deconstruction of The Hero Ace Pilot, but that doesn't keep me from enjoying watching L (And Light) more.

-hopes any of that made sense-

It makes sense to me, and I think it's a perfectly good reason to like what you do. I personally find L really interesting, but probably for the very reasons you mention, I never got quite as engaged with him as I have other characters.

(I'm a fan of both Deconstructions and heroic archetypes, so Suzaku was kind of win-win for me. He has archetypical characteristics I love, and they get played for drama instead of being handwaved away.)

I wouldn't say that complex is always better. Suzaku and Lelouch were always all oer the place with to depths their willing to stoop and how sympathetic they are to each other, L and Light were way more consisent, but still interesting.

I couldn't get into Code Geass. It's a shame considering how much I love Death Note and how similar the themes are (I was recommended it on this basis). I'll probably give it another try soon.

[up] Conversely I couldn't get into Death Note after Code Geass.

I found Lelouch a far more relatable character than Light, but that is perhaps not the point.

Code Geass had awesome music, an excellent array of characters, an interesting implied backstory, some good (if somewhat scarce) humour, along with Crazy Awesome everything turned Up To Eleven.

And, to me at least, Death Note just seemed a little... Dead.

I think Death Note's main attraction is it's logical plot, it's Show, Don't Tell approach to genius characters, and a well-thought Magic A Is Magic A.

Code Geass had too many moments like "Lelouch pulls two million costumes out of his ass", "New Geass power of the episode", "new superpowered mecha of the episode" and of course, the infamous "Geass control can randomly break down" incident.

[up] An understanding of chess, a basic knowledge of momentum and non-noodle characters would also be on my list of improvements for Code Geass.

Of course my list of improvements for Death Note would probably be "make it more like Code Geass" tongue.

A more unique question might would you ship Lelouch×Suzaku or Light×L?

I thought Lelouch (before Flanderization) was more interesting than Light, but Death Note had a better second half.

THIS. I agree with all of this. I too think Suzaku's just okay (or at least he was in the first season) but he's no L. That L was more awesome than any Code Geass character. That I like Light's character more than Lelouch, even though Lelouch is also an awesome character and the better person. And that Death Note was just an all-around better series and experience than Code Geass. I mean, it's second half was weak but not as weak as R2 was.

Though I'm not sure about the whole characterization thing. Some Code Geass characters like Llyod, Milly, Nina, Gino, Cornellia, Viletta, and V.V among others didn't do much for me. And R2 throwing in Loads And Loads Of Characters did NOT help matters.

[up] Wait, how was Lelouch flanderized?

...Death Note's character designs aren't as ugly.

...for real though, I think Code Geass has more appeal to different genres— mecha, melodrama, action, etc., whereas Death Note is a more straightforward approach, despite being Police Procedural and supernatural. September's right, there was less illogicalities  *

in Death Note.

I did find the art style in Code Geass to be somewhat off-putting. I don't dislike noodle people, but the proportions of the characters look odd in an action series, because you're not supposed to be worrying that Lelouch is going to snap in half.

But it does seem like the kind of series that has a broader appeal, as Blam said, whereas Death Note is a more straightforward psychological thriller with supernatural elements.

A show that only ever tried to do one thing but was slick and well executed, or a show that tried to do everything and ended up a disappointing mess? Personally, I go for Geass.

Death Note is much better, but Code Geass is much more entertaining.

However, Code Geass doesn't have Ryuk, and it loses because of that.
