Do vamps drain other vamps? If not then you could just make all the dwarves immortal and run a vamp fortress.

Would they still want food or drink?

I don't either, and I just suggested doing that to Beigeknife. They have a Vamp of their own, now. Of course, the current overseer is a Dwarfitarian, so I doubt he'll be open to a blood sacrifice. Perhaps the next one will be.

Vampires do not eat other vampires.

Having a whole fortress of vampires is overkill when, to my knowledge, Toady still hasn't done anything to fix the exploit where you could keep your fortress from ever counting as abandoned by having a single vampire holed up somewhere.

It's not overkill when going after the Circus. Especially since vampires CAN be dismembered and beheaded. That last one is fatal for them. After all, you had to be able to kill one in the first place to turn your whole fortress.

Well there is the downside that having so many vampires makes it hard to get new ones (because new migrants will probably be killed before they'll drink the water) and that vampires are currently bugged to suffer from alcohol withdrawal even though they never drink it.

Well, after spending a little while trying to -coughs- mine out my wagon -coughs- I've taken on a tutorial I'm finding quite helpful. It's going nicely, other than me not being able to find clay for farms, and having to play with water channeling. I'll get the hang of it, some time. evil grin

Yay! We've struck clay and have twenty plots formed. Not sure how many are actually going, mind you, but I have them formed. I also got my first wave of immigrants: a Ranger, a Farmer, a Fishery Worker, and a Peasant with some battle training apparently. Plus five children, a kitten, and a guineahen.

So far I've got a woodshop, a stoneshop, and a jeweler going. Stone's making statues, while the jeweler's cutting Fire Opal and Aventurine or however that's called.

I'm not doing half bad so far, but I just know that will change.

what is this about farms needing clay? last I played a million years ago, all you needed for an underground farm was a splash of water to make some mud.

Maybe water and sand works, but when I broke water in that fortress, it didn't hit sand. Or soil. I had none. DID have Clay. I started a different fortress on a world I'd genned before, and it's going smashingly. I found Clay Loam early on and have 12 farms there.

Now I just need to master Barrel and Bin management. To the Wiki!

Then . . . Oh!XD I had some mud and didn't even think about it, since I already had clay by the time I noticed.

On the bright side, I just accidentally pissed off my first set of elven traders! Accidentally offered them something made of willow and pigtail. Fuckers. They had a caravan full of plant matter, including wood!

I'm up to . . . God, I don't know. Over fifty citizens, since I got a massive wave of immigrants. Now I just have to find jobs for all of them.

this is why I hook up a reservoir of water or magma over my trade depot. I'll get the items I want, regardless of their disposition.

Oh, it would have been nice, but not needed. I'll deal with them better next time. Besides, it spared me from spending money on them that I can save up for a real caravan. I don't need wood, I have enough trees to harvest anyway. I need metal goods for now, or at least non-wood stuff.

I had food problems. The Dwarven trade caravan arrived in the nick of time to keep the Tantrum spirals from getting out of hand. No Dwarves dead . . . yet. We were able to generate over 20,000 in trade with minor gems and a boatload (Maybe literally, if it's a small boat) of stone crafts.

yeah, caravans tend to be food and animal sources for me. Breeding pairs of grizzly bears are great.

Just noticed this in the updates feed:

fix problems with dwarven brains that had developed

There is not enough code in the world, Oh Great Toady One. Not even for you.

Not nearly a good enough singer for the Choir Invisible, and the Basement Room With A Synth Invisible is much less prestigious.

There are no problems with Dwarven brains. They behave exactly as permanently drunk idiots should.

So I tried out the Towns demo which is on Steam greenlight and looks like a DF clone with a GUI and simpler. From the little I was able to do, it did not seem as entertaining, mostly because they all did not act like drunk little idiots.

Towns is watered down df. In short boring. It is grossly under developed by comparison.

yeah that's what it looked like. what I was hoping for was a DF clone that I could jump into quickly, since DF requires a ton of time spent in world gen and location choosing and stuff. This isn't a bad thing at all, but nowadays I'm almost never in the mood or have the energy to do a lot of preplanning.
