A group of children are given body horror powers and forced to fight an enemy that they have no knowledge of. Eventually they rise to the challenge and fight back. To cover their butts they enlist even more children to help them fight, only one difference, these kids are "special". In the end its all moot and everyone dies. Ohh and the series is being reprinted.

Some guy gets his girl stolen by his boss, so has a tantrum and quits. Unfortunately the company can't last without him.

Hero needs to find six objects.

Conversely, this could apply to Dragonball. Then again maybe not.

This author writes spiritually uplifting novels about learned men using human ingenuity and sense of wonder to discover, uncover, and if necessary destroy strange entities. Heroically they are often willing to go through with it even if it costs them their sanity or lives, just to keep the rest of the human race not only safe, but blissfully ignorant. The complete works of HP Lovecraft

And it just gets better from there!
