I seem to have luck with these things. The only VN I've had troubles installing was Umineko EP5, and that was only because some idiot packaged up EP4 and tried to pass it off as 5.

*sigh*

I'll be happy to answer technical questions regarding the Clannad Full Voice VN.

Yes, installing VNs if they don't come in handy localised formats is a pain in the ass.

I learned everything I know about file directories and registry entries from patching stuff.

And when it goes wrong...have fun undoing everything so you can start from scratch.

To start off, everything you need to get the Clannad VN to work can be found here.

Also, if installation of the game itself fails, use Applocale or obtain an East Asian language pack (for Win XP).

There's a files section (which I'll link to anyway here).

For the translation itself, simply download the latest SEEN.txt (this is indicated by the .txt file's filename) and put it in the main directory of the game. Make sure you rename it to SEEN.txt and get rid of the old one.

Note that there are two versions of the SEEN files. One is VP, which stands for voice-patch, which is basically just the original unvoiced Clannad patched with voices from the console version. FV stands for Full Voice, which is the recommended version of the VN to play.

If Real Live (the actual .exe of the game) fails to run, download this rar archive (for Full Voice) or this rar archive (for Voice Patch versions) and extract everything to the main folder. The problem is, these rar files contain an older version of the SEEN for their respective versions, so don't extract the SEEN.txt within them and use the latest ones which I will link to to make things straightforward. After extracting everything to the main folder, download this fixed Real Live and replace the old one with it.

This is the latest SEEN.txt for Full Voice and this is the latest SEEN.txt for Voice Patch. DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS; RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE THEM INSTEAD because these are direct links. You don't want to be opening 7-10 MB .txt files in your browser now, would you?

If anything else doesn't work, let me know, 'kay? :)

^Are you using a mounted image to install the game from?

It might be that it can't detect an actual disc in the drive...

That's the Real Live problem I was talking about. Did you get the Real Live from one of the RAR files I linked to? If that doesn't work, I can email you my working Real Live .exe...

By the way here's a link for the menu translations.

Shit, okay, that is totally my fault. It's been a year and a half since I did the actual installation, so I'm sorry...

Umm, here's a site where you can get a fixed Real Live... ._________.

No wait that's also a broken version I think. This one's it for sure. Sorry! :((

Is there any specific reason why FSN was the first VN for everyone here? It's not even old. Is it that famous, or what?

I just randomly decided to try a VN, and it happened to be FSN.

And what's everyone's problem with the H scenes? Ok, the "ahh... aahh..." part looks lame when written, but the pictures were very, very cool. And by cool, I mean hot.

FSN is a lot of people's first VN because it's just about the most famous, and is held in very high regard by people who like this kind of thing. (It actually wasn't my first: Tsukihime has the distinction of the being the first I tried, but to date Da Capo is the only one I've finished, being really really easy. tongue)

Also; most of problems with the erotic content come from how...shoehorned into the narrative they are and the awkwardness of the writing. The illustrations by themselves aren't too bad. In fact, they're pretty tame by today's standards.

You know, that doesn't really differentiate it from every other eroge out there.

FSN?

Hmmm...

Well I'd say what differentiates it from eroge in which pornography is the sole purpose of the enterprise is the scarcity of the actual ero- bit.

You can take the H-scenes out and it won't make a dent in how the main narrative goes; if you do the same with something like Ikazuchi No Senshi Raidi you're going to end up with maybe three scenes of cursory exposition.

I guess, that's probably a problem with the whole idea of Plot With Porn .

For most people, characters of a mainstream story appearing in a pornographic scene is just OOC, no matter what. If the same scenes would be only implied, it would be believable that they happened, especially the second one in Fate, but most people don't actually want to SEE likeable, deep, realistic human characters having a threesome, talking dirty, or getting a faceful.

Kinda similar to when people complain that Rule 34 "ruined their childhood". These scenes just hurt the illusion.

BTW, will there be any similar scenes in the other two routes? And with which characters?

I don't know. I don't think getting spoiled really ruins much of anything. Especially not with something as basic as the heroine of any particular route...

I think there's a lot to be said for the tabula rasa approach.

So, I started Symphonic Rain, and it seems that what the reviews meant by "similar to Ever17" is that you have to go through the three routes before everything comes together. Otherwise, it's completely different.

Blargh. Patch is failing me. Hardcore. I can't figure out the problem and the internet doesn't help.

So I'm going to start a game called Chaos;Head.

The game's premise revolves around a high school student named Takumi Nishijō who unknowingly walks into the scene of a gruesome murder on his way home. More mysterious events start happening afterward as similar murders occur in the area. Takumi struggles to cope with reality and the delusions he experiences as he tries to avoid getting caught by the perpetrator behind the chain of killings.

People play FSN first because it's an action packed fantasy story instead of primarily a romance or drama. It's just a less niche genre overall, for whatever cultural reasons. Much like Naruto and Bleach tend to be gateway series for new anime viewers, FSN is a gateway series for Visual Novels. In many ways it is a shounen action story. That's not to demean it, Tropes Are Tools, but it likely appeals to a larger demographic for these reasons.

Chaos Head is interesting, although that premise blurb seems somewhat misleading.
