The Boondocks:

I suspect that he might have religious issues with homosexuality, but that it wouldn't take much to convince him that there was a case against the denial of civil rights there.

Largely, the religious stigma against homosexuality is somewhat trumped up. The Bible doesn't really say much about it, and what it does say can generally be attributed to cultural factors (the Israelites were a small tribe, and gay sex tends to very rarely result in procreation and increase of productive numbers). A knowledgable scholar and reverend like Dr. King would know this.

We always remember the "I have a dream" moments for Dr. King, but we rarely recall that he was also highly critical of capitalism, and supportive of communism. He's been Flanderized as being a saintlike crusader, and no more or less, but he was a complicated person to be sure. here is an interesting article about how MLK was made into a sacred cow.

You mean socialist right? Communism's whole violent overthrow of authority wasn't King's thing.

No, I mean "communist". He wasn't a communist himself, but he was friends with several, and I would guess that he thought that there were some ideas worth exploring in that philosophy.

That makes more sense. Communism believes that the system is so broken that armed revolution is the only solution. King's last effort, the poor peoples campaign, was all about stopping such violence, though it was definitely not putting capitalism in a good light.

Then he died and people rioted.

There are pacifist forms of Communism too, but the orthodox marxist view does rely on armed revolution.

Yeah, hippies would be living in "communes" shortly thereafter. There's room in the philosophy for more than just Marxist revolution. I can't see King supporting armed conflict, but... people want to live as equals and share everything? Shit, he'd be all over that.

Socialism still seems more his thing. But no, I don't see him above respecting the goals of communism. Who doesn't?

But even then, look at all the crap Obama got from being a socialist. Even though he's just been proposing typical democratic agendas. I'd love to see him try and push a REAL socialist health care plan...ok no I wouldn't. Maybe just in a comedy cartoon not in real life.

Sudden, the whole thing about Martin Luther King Jr being shunned in our modern society doesn't seem to far off. Especially when people can't get over the fact that he's not a perfect saint, just a man who wants to do good. He probably would move to Canada.

We deify people. And then we tend to be surprised when faced with the real thing. It happens.

On the note of MLK being disappointed with today's society, there's also class issues. Yeah, he'd probably be really against the way corporations & franchises control things nowadays. He was definitely outspoken against examples of pitfalls of a capitalist society - though that doesn't mean he wanted to replace it with an equally flawed communist society - had he lived longer he probably would have gone into social-economic-labor reform, remember, the last thing he worked on before he died was helping a garbage strike.

King may not have been a Communist, but J. Edgar Hoover certainly suspected him of being one, and that serves as the basis for the "FBI killed King" conspiracy theory

if King had lived to see the Gay Rights movement, he would've taken the Voltair route — that being while he may not have agreed with it, he wouldn't deny the rights that other people deserve

That was a good song they used in that video.

Any idiot knows Freud was a Star Trek fan and Star Wars invented The Hero, right?
As long as they end it well, I don't mind if this is the last season. I mean, I would rather have three outragious seasons than have the show inevitably get watered down because they pissed so many people off.

That said, I'd also probably watch it forever if it kept running.

That song has been stuck in my head for days. Kind of an awkward thing to burst out singing when you're crossing the campus.

Just saw the premiere. True to form of being more about social issues than political issues as the comic did, it focuses on the pretentiousness and ignorance that people have had surrounding Obama rather than talking directly about him or his politics.

Funny, but I think they're going too far with "Huey's the only smart person on the face of the Earth" bit, now that it seems like everyone is either arrogant/ignorant/or deluded but him. I hear Caesars showing up eventually, and the show desperately needs him.
